Living Units In Cairene Houses In The Ottoman Period: Towards A New Understanding Of Cairene Domestic Architecture, Ahmed Maher Hassaballah

Cairene domestic architecture comprises a variety of housing types, responding to the needs of different socioeconomic classes of society. Of these types, two are studied in detail herein, namely, palaces and mansions of the grandees and middle-class houses. As suggested by Hanna, the latter were divided into separate unequal living units. The study in hand investigates the existence of similar living units in the palaces and mansions'. This is accomplished through analyzing living units in some middle-class houses to determine their structure, types and organization. These characteristics are used to define similar units in palaces and mansions.

Since Quranic inscriptions dominate the epigraphic decoration of Cairene Islamic religious monuments, the target of this thesis has been to investigate the Quranic inscriptions of some selected religious monuments of each main era of the Islamic history of Cairo: Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman. The questions examined are the following: what was the frequency of utilizing Quranic inscriptions compared to other types of inscriptions? What are the common architectural locations of Quranic quotations compared to other types of inscriptions? The aim of this sociolinguistic study is to examine the grammatical gender difficulties that non-Arabic speakers face when they learn Arabic as a second language (ASL) This work concentrates on English and French speakers and compares the errors each make while learning Arabic. The choice of these two languages resulted from two factors: (1) since the author is fluent in English and French, she conducted her research on speakers of both languages; (2) since both Arabic and French are considerably more marked morphologically than English, the researcher is interested in examining the type of errors made by the speakers of …

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of Arabs by American students. The study sought to answer three questions. These questions focused on the perceptions of Arabs by American students and the influence that mass media and specifically TV has on students.

The literature reviewed in this study indicated that historical events played an important role in shaping the current relations between Arabs and Americans. Further, the literature discussed the relationship between television exposure and the creation of consumer social reality and perceptions. This study investigates the cross-cultural pragmatic differences in realizing the speech act of sympathy. Specifically it examines: (1) the similarities and differences in strategies used for expressing sympathy by both males and females in the Egyptians and Irish groups and (2) the kinds of pragmatic failure expected to occur among the Egyptian male and female EFL learners when expressing sympathy in the target language.

Two types of data were collected: spontaneous and elicited. Spontaneous data were collected by audiotape recording and note taking. Elicited data were collected by a ten-item discourse completion task (DCT). Subjects of the elicited data were …

This study investigated lexical organization in trilingual by attempting to determine a) whether lexical items in the dominant language (L1) are stored separately from those of the L2 and the L3; and b) whether lexical items in the L2 and the L3 are stored together, in a "foreign language store", or separately. As well, potential differences between the lexical organization of bilinguals and trilingual were examined. Previous research has revealed that language dominance and proficiency play a crucial role in intra- and interlanguage interference. This thesis presents the 1919 revolution in Egypt and its effects on the Egyptian political arena as portrayed by the political cartoons during that period. The political cartoons portrayed a visual and tangible approach to a review of nationalism during this era. The cartoons also focused on Egyptian efforts to end British colonialism and imperialism. A review of the cartoons within a six-year period (1918- 1924) yielded one hundred and eighty-two political cartoons.
