Based on cognitive approaches to second language learning, the thesis emphasizes the correspondence between MSA and ECA, and argues for simultaneous teaching of the two varieties from basic levels onward. Development in CALL technology can effectively implement cognitive principles and realize the goals of the integrated approach in the field of TAFL. The thesis describes a software program designed for teaching beginners MSA and ECA simultaneously using idioms as a unifying conceptual element.

Military slavery constituted one of the most important institutions in medieval Islamic history. Most research concerning military slavery concentrates on the Mamluk dynasty, while relatively little research explores the beginning of the institution and the reasons for its introduction. Those works that concentrate on military slavery or the 'Abbasid time period either use it as an example for other arguments or do not provide enough detail to create a complete argument. Institutionalization And Reform: The Case Of The National Democratic Party In Egypt, Safinaz El Tarouty

This thesis examines the National Democratic Party in Egypt (NDP). It assesses the internal dynamics and reforms of the party between 2000 and 2004 and asks to what extent these reforms have influenced the nature and institutionalization of the party. Starting from the emergence of the Egyptian republic, it traces the rise and development of the consecutive single parties under Nasser and the creation of the NDP under Sadat in 1978. This thesis suggests that the reforms of 2000 do not appear to have significantly increased the level of institutionalization of Egypt’s persistently dominant party. It argues that the reforms …

The buildings of the different Islamic dynasties in Egypt with their great cultural and aesthetic significance have survived and remained functional despite numerous natural as well as man-made disasters. The astrolabe is a well known scientific instrument, commonly found in Islamic art collections. Despite its placement in art museums, it does not receive the same examination or discussion as other metalwork. This leads to errors in dating and place of origin when an instrument that lacks a dedication inscription or a signature.

This study places the astrolabe in an art historical context and not a scientific one.
