Lori Laitman And Sara Teasdale: A Performer's Guide To The Metropolitan Tower And Other Songs, Mystery, And The Years, Andrea Mueller
Lori Laitman And Sara Teasdale: A Performer's Guide To The Metropolitan Tower And Other Songs, Mystery, And The Years, Andrea Mueller
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
American composer, Lori Laitman, has published over fifty works for solo voice and piano. She has become an important contributor to contemporary art song composition, the genre in which she primarily focused her compositional efforts. Laitman may, at any time, be working on a variety of projects, predominately commissions. Though not an extensive amount of information has been published about her creative life, over the past eight years much interest has arisen in her repertoire, both artistically and scholastically. This paper will focus on Laitman’s settings of the Sara Teasdale poetry including three song sets: The Metropolitan Tower and Other …
Moppet*Sense, Tyler Rochelle Mackie
Moppet*Sense, Tyler Rochelle Mackie
LSU Master's Theses
Moppet*Sense is a hybrid collaboration between my adult self and a fictionalized version of me as a young girl, or moppet. Through use of craft, textiles, sound, light, color and narrative the work describes a space where both woman and moppet can join to engage with one another in a playful exchange of knowledge and experience. Saturated hues, exaggerated scale and a playful approach to the handicrafts offer the viewer an overwhelming, hyper-realistic experience of girlhood and play, which they can each physically explore and navigate throughout. The work refers to the nostalgic and domestic through its employment of familiar …
Three Functions For The Fac̦Ade Of Wells Cathedral: Competition For The Bishopric, Liturgy And Processions, And Heavenly Jerusalem, Alexandra Leigh Pearson
Three Functions For The Fac̦Ade Of Wells Cathedral: Competition For The Bishopric, Liturgy And Processions, And Heavenly Jerusalem, Alexandra Leigh Pearson
LSU Master's Theses
The facade of Wells Cathedral belongs among the most extraordinary church facades in all of England. An expanse of architectural and figural sculpture, the facade is one hundred fifty feet wide and originally included one hundred seventy-seven niches with full-length statues and ninety quatrefoils framing either a bust of an angel or a scene from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. Above a height of seventy-five feet, a gable with figural sculpture and two towers top the façade. Such an elaborate facade is unique and begs the questions: by what means did Wells come to look as it …
Ananda Devi's Narrative Strategies And Subversions., Ritu Tyagi
Ananda Devi's Narrative Strategies And Subversions., Ritu Tyagi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation proposes a feminist narratological study of texts by Ananda Devi, a contemporary Francophone writer from Mauritius. I examine three principle narrative strategies that allow Devi to challenge the dominant androcentric discourses. These discourses ignore the feminine world of domesticity and impose images of submission on women, thereby curbing feminine expression and quest. Inspired by the efforts of critics such as Alison Case, Robyn Warhol, Susan Lanser to study narrative structures in the context of cultural constructions of gender, I argue that Devi employs narrative strategies that allow her marginalized narrators to intervene in dominant structures of narrative construction …

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Chinese New Year In West Kalimantan: Ritual Theatre And Political Circus, Margaret Chan
Chinese New Year In West Kalimantan: Ritual Theatre And Political Circus, Margaret Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Since 2002, when Chinese New Year became a national holiday in Indonesia, spirit medium parades on the fifteen day of the New Year (called Cap Go Meh) have been growing in size in certain West Kalimantan towns, especially Singkawang. This parade in particular has become a major tourist draw-card. Referring to local history, Chinese popular religion and Hakka culture, this article applies a performance analysis methodology to dissect this contemporary phenomenon from religious, historical and inter-ethnic perspectives. It shows how the parades have become enmeshed in current inter-ethnic politics in West Kalimantan, as well as revealing the way that adaptations …
The Magic Of Chinese Theatre: Theatre As A Ritual Of Sacral Transmogrification, Margaret Chan
The Magic Of Chinese Theatre: Theatre As A Ritual Of Sacral Transmogrification, Margaret Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Social and Staged dramas, entertainment and ritual; Chinese theatre and religion share a dialectical relationship. Ancient exorcistic rituals became dramatized to awe and inspire the audience of devotees. Eventually, exorcistic troupes had to compete among themselves to attract audiences, so that an element of entertainment came into ritual theatre. Travelling story-tellers and drama troupes went from place to place entrancing their audiences with stories of gods and heroes. The actors used costumes, props and masks, and soon the characters from these entertaining theatre shows formed a cast of gods and folk heroes in the minds of the people. A dialectical …
Two Constructions Of Libertarianism, Chandran Kukathas
Two Constructions Of Libertarianism, Chandran Kukathas
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The libertarian first principle—a belief in individual freedom—can lead to two different and not necessarily acceptable societies from the standpoint of liberty. One is the “Union of Liberty,” in which communities, associations, and intermediate bodies are held to rigorous standards of voluntariness (and thus face sharp limits on their internal associational freedom because of the knowledge that children will be born into them). In the other, the “Federation of Liberty,” they are not (thereby allowing children to be born into locally unfree environments). While in any free society individuals may voluntarily join together and waive some of their rights (in institutions …

Throughout the present decade, a succession of playwrights, directors and theatre artists from Argentina have gone about leaving their imprint upon the Barcelona theatrical landscape (and by extension, that of Catalunya), an artistically fertile ground that, since the 1980s (and since the period of the democratic transition), has exhibited an undeniable yearning to breathe fresh air, to imbue itself with new aesthetic paradigms and become an essential point of reference within the world of European drama. Today Barcelona finds itself immersed in the most dynamic and extraordinary period in its modern theatre history, with an abundant outpouring of new drama …

Using Scripture In Counselling Evangelicals, A. Tim Span
Using Scripture In Counselling Evangelicals, A. Tim Span
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis examines how the Bible can be used beneficially and ethically as a resource in counseling evangelicals. For evangelicals the Bible is their “primary text”—an unequalled source of authority and comfort. Evangelicals begin with the self-attestation of scripture to its own reliability and usefulness (e.g. 2 Tim. 3:16–17). When the scriptures are used in a responsible way using sound exegetical method there can be real dividends for the hearer. With proper preparation and informed consent, the counselor who ministers to evangelical clients can appropriate the message of the scriptures in a way that brings emotional and spiritual health. The …
Leaders In Conflict: Diefenbaker, Kennedy, And Canada’S Response To The Cuban Missile Crisis, Matthew Gurney
Leaders In Conflict: Diefenbaker, Kennedy, And Canada’S Response To The Cuban Missile Crisis, Matthew Gurney
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
While the Cuban Missile Crisis has received a tremendous amount of attention from American scholars, in Canada the historiography concerning the Crisis is quite limited, with few monographs devoted to it. Typically the Crisis might receive a few pages of attention, perhaps a chapter in a book concerned with other topics. This historiographical “blind spot” has allowed misconceptions concerning Canada’s diplomatic and military participation in the Crisis to persist in this country’s collective memory of the Crisis, which is a disservice not only to Canada’s national heritage, but to the thousands of men and women who strove to prepare Canada …
Religious Tourism In Roman Greece, David James Stark
Religious Tourism In Roman Greece, David James Stark
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In recent years, Roman travel and tourism has become a focus of scholarship. Most of the scholarship however has focused either on religious travel through studies of pilgrimage or on secular travel through studies of tourism. Many tourism scholars however have begun to recognize that the differences between what is a tourist and what is a pilgrim is not as large as was once thought. These scholars have coined a new term, the religious tourist, to describe those travelers who seem to bridge the gap between the traditional definition of a pilgrim and the traditional definition of a tourist. Through …

Spanish-Specific Patterns And Nonword Repetition Performance In English Language Learners, María R. Brea-Spahn
Spanish-Specific Patterns And Nonword Repetition Performance In English Language Learners, María R. Brea-Spahn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nonword repetition tasks were originally devised to assess the efficiency of the phonological loop (Baddeley & Hitch, 1974), a component of the working memory system, where verbal information is temporarily stored and translated to support activities like phonological processing during early word-recognition (Snowling, 1981; Wagner et al., 2003), speech production (McCarthy & Warrington, 1984), and articulation (Watkins, Dronkers, & Vargha-Khadem, 2002; Yoss & Darley, 1974).
From a practical perspective, there is a significant need for a systematically-designed Spanish nonword repetition measure that is equivalent to currently-available English measures. For this study, a database of nonwords that considered phonotactic and phonological …

Finding Confucianism In Scientology: A Comparative Analysis, John Albert Kieffer
Finding Confucianism In Scientology: A Comparative Analysis, John Albert Kieffer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Scientology holds considerable interest for scholars of new religious movements. As such, this study aims to contribute new data and insight to ongoing theoretical work within this area of religious studies scholarship. Engaged in this inquiry are the similarities between Scientology, the new religious movement founded in 1951 by L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986), and the Chinese religion, Confucianism, which originates with the teachings of Confucius (551-479 BCE). Though Hubbard admits being influenced by eastern thinking such as Buddhism and Daoism in shaping his worldview, he specifically discounts Confucius as relevant in this regard. However, through comparisons between Scientology and Confucianism, …
A Hypergraph Regularity Method For Linear Hypergraphs, Shoaib Amjad Khan
A Hypergraph Regularity Method For Linear Hypergraphs, Shoaib Amjad Khan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma is powerful tool in Graph Theory, yielding many applications in areas such as Extremal Graph Theory, Combinatorial Number Theory and Theoretical Computer Science. Strong hypergraph extensions of graph regularity techniques were recently given by Nagle, Rödl, Schacht and Skokan, by W.T. Gowers, and subsequently, by T. Tao. These extensions have yielded quite a few non-trivial applications to Extremal Hypergraph Theory, Combinatorial Number Theory and Theoretical Computer Science. A main drawback to the hypergraph regularity techniques above is that they are highly technical. In this thesis, we consider a less technical version of hypergraph regularity which more directly …
