A Multi-Functional Essay Prompt For State Mandated Assessments, Allen Anthony Glick

A State-mandated assessment of high school English composition skills can be a trying experience for sophomore basic writers. Because students must construct a text-supported argument around the State's choice of theme, it is of the utmost importance that the assessors present for thematic considerations a properly identified subject that is universally accessible to all sophomores. Through the analysis of an essay prompt used in a benchmark exam from the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills--a sentence in which I discern both ambiguity and inaccessibility--this thesis hopefully sheds light on considerations that should be made in the construction of an effective …

At Play In Her Clearing: Centering The Personal Experience Of Disability Within Irigarayan Philsophy, Katherine Elaine Wallis

From a theoretical perspective, the disabled woman can be seen as `doubly othered' within patriarchal culture. Because the disabled woman faces this dual otherness, she is barred from both masculine language and able-bodied culture. By looking at the memoirs of three women who became disabled in adulthood: Nancy Mairs', Waist-High in the World: A Life Among the Nondisabled, Simi Linton's My Body Politic, and finally Janet Price and Margrit Shildrick's critical article "Bodies Together: Touch, Ethics and Disability," I will ask the question: How can the disabled woman gain a new sense of embodiment and move beyond the able/disabled binary? …

This project entailed the selection, background research and documentation, casting, direction, vocal coaching, and post-production analysis of Hidalgo High School's production of ¡Bocon!. Documentation includes research and analysis of the play, its cultural significance, and an evaluation of the play as a production vehicle for the Department of Theatre Arts at Hidalgo Early College High School.

The Avant-Garde And Resident Korean Film-Making: Kim Sujin And The Shinjuku Ryozanpaku, Noboru Tomonari
Asian Studies Faculty Work
The plays and films of Kim Sujin (1954– ) and his company Shinjuku Ryozanpaku attest to the variety of styles employed in recent works by resident Korean artists in Japanese literature and theatre. The appearance of his plays and films is connected to the changing identities of resident Koreans, especially since the 1980s. Kim makes use of political theatre performances of the earlier period to magnify and to remake into art the experiences of resident Koreans in Japan. As such, his works mobilize the legacy of his antecedents in Japanese theatre as well as the past experiences of resident Koreans. …

Carnal Excess: Flesh At The Limits Of Imagination, Virginia Burrus

This essay explores representations of fleshly excess in Christian and Jewish texts of the late fourth and fifth centuries, from the cosmically-scaled figures of Adam and the resurrected Christ in Genesis Rabbah and Augustine's City of God, on the one hand, to the hagiographical portraits of fat rabbis and monks in the tractate Baba Metsia of the Babylonian Talmud and the Lausiac History of Palladius, on the other. The Platonic figure of the khora is initially invoked to frame two main arguments: first, that these late ancient texts discover transcendence within, rather than outside of, the boundlessness of materiality; …

Many ancient Near Eastern texts reflect a concern for ritual accuracy. They depict ancient kings justifying their ritual practices on the basis of supposedly invariable tradition and, frequently, on the basis of old ritual texts. They also invoke ritual acts and omissions to explain the course of past history and to promise future punishments and rewards. In fact, very many texts assert that ritual performance is the most determinative factor in the success or failure of rulers and nations. The rhetoric of ritual therefore pervaded royal propaganda as well as temple texts. It also provided the principal rationale for criticizing …

Teach The Children: Education And Knowledge In Recent Children's Fantasy, Elisabeth Rose Gruner

This essay is an investigation into how learning is portrayed in children's books. It starts from two premises: first, that at least one origin of children's literature is in didacticism, and that learning and pedagogy continue to be important in much of the literature we provide for children today. Thus, for example, David Rudd claims that most histories of children's literature on "the tension between instruction and entertainment," and that the genre as we know it develops within, among other things, "an educational system promoting literacy" (29, 34).
