Robots In War: Issues Of Risk And Ethics, Patrick Lin, George A. Bekey, Keith Abney

Philosophy

War robots clearly hold tremendous advantages-from saving the lives of our own soldiers, to safely defusing roadside bombs, to operating in inaccessible and dangerous environments such as mountainside caves and underwater. Without emotions and other liabilities on the battlefield, they could conduct warfare more ethically and effectively than human soldiers who are susceptible to overreactions, anger, vengeance, fatigue, low morale, and so on. But the use of robots, especially autonomous ones, raises a a host of ethical and risk issues. This paper offers a a survey of such emerging issues in this new but rapidly advancing area of technology.

Discovery Mentoring: Creating Student Connections proposes to develop a student-to-student mentoring program which would match undeclared, incoming first year students to mentors. This program facilitates the objectives of University College by building upon their efforts to create a “small community,” feel in a large university. The Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) recognizes the presence of a growing number of second language writers in institutions of higher education across North America, including technical colleges, two-year colleges, four-year institutions, and graduate programs. As colleges and universities have actively sought to increase the diversity of their student populations through recruitment of international students, and as domestic second language populations have grown, second language writers have become an integral part of writing courses and programs.

The images of a nuclear war bringing the end of the world or something close to it have been firmly planted in the human imagination since 1945. Fiction and speculative nonfiction writers quickly followed John Hersey’s factual and journalistic Hiroshima with fantastic imaginings of nuclear Armageddon, especially once the Cold War began. In the early nuclear age, visions of future wars often fell into the nuclear holocaust, end-of-the-world genre. Writers imagined future nuclear war as a no-win exchange of strategic city-busting nuclear weapons. This tradition continued until the end of the Cold War. Since 2003, when Clémence Boulouque's memoir, Mort d'un silence, was published, its author has written in a variety of genres, including novels, articles, and film scripts. Mort d'un silence interests the reader for several reasons: it revisits Judge Gilles Boulouque's suicide in December 1990 and the consequences of this act for his family, especially his thirteen-year-old daughter, Clémence; it recalls the political climate in France during the late 1980s, when Gilles Boulouque had already begun to fight terrorism; and it illustrates the tension between disclosure and concealment as its twenty-six-year-old narrator describes her passage from childhood to adolescence and from …

Masculinities In War: René-Nicolas Ehni's Algérie Roman, Jane Evans

René-Nicolas Ehni, controversial social figure and critic in France since the 1960s and literary figure especially known for his plays and novels, characterizes his French military service during the Algerian war for independence in his autobiographical Algérie roman, published in 2002. In the novel, the first-person narrator-protagonist intersperses his descriptions of the struggle with scenes from his past and present denoting family genealogies and homosexual relationships. Through a narration that is itself marked by violence, including digressions, rhetorical figures and discontinuous prose, Algérie roman strongly affirms the significance of masculine friendships of every kind.

The Soldier In French Literature Of The Twentieth And Twenty-First Centuries, Jane Evans

This article traces the image of the soldier in representative French iterary works of the 20th and 21st centuries while relating the discussion to the development of French nationhood. Barbusse's Le Feu, Chamson's Le Puits des miracles, Vercors' Le Silence de la mer, and Ehni's Algérie roman will all be considered within the sociopolitical frameworks described by Weber and Bhabha.

Analysis Of The Problem Of Prediction In Physics From A Computational And Foundational Approach, Juan Ferret

In this paper, we analyze the problem of prediction in physics from a computational and foundational viewpoint. Besides showing that assumptions like Laplace determinism, statistical determinism, etc., can be naturally explained by this computational analysis, we use the concepts of Kolmogorov complexity and algorithmic randomness from Algorithmic Information Theory, as well as the novel more physics-oriented variants of these notions, to show that the dynamical evolution of a system can be practically predicted with the dynamical laws, the initial, and final conditions of the system.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the role of anticipation of systems in physics. Previous work on the subject (DuBois, 2000) selected certain types of systems as anticipatory, but the argument here establishes that all dynamical systems in physics are necessarily anticipatory.

Battered Women, Children And The End Of Abusive Relationships, Angela M. Moe

Sociology Faculty Publications

Much work has focused on the interpersonal dynamics of violent relationships, but less is known about the specific turning points that prompt women at least to try to end them. Using a feminist standpoint method and phenomenological-based analysis of in-depth interviews with mothers in a domestic violence shelter, this article focuses on the role of children in women’s decisions to leave abusive partners. It discusses arriving at the decision, the logistics involved in leaving and planning for the future, and it presents policy and advocacy-based recommendations that are aimed at addressing the social welfare of women and children.

Empowered21 was formed by the Commission on Holy Spirit Empowerment in the 21st Century, which is a broad Kingdom coalition facilitated by the International Center for Spiritual Renewal in partnership with Oral Roberts University. Three ongoing conversations were established through the Commission and included a leadership track, a scholar track and a next generation track. This paper focuses on three interrelated topics: (1) Literature as an art form that is philosophical by nature; (2) Literature as an art form that reveals truth in the form of perceptual knowledge, which is autonomous (sensuous) knowledge, likened to “cognitive emotionality,”and (3) Literature as philosophically inspiring our effective and legitimate thinking on moral issues. I attempt to show that engaging literature as a philosophical endeavor can prove more rewarding from the perspective of moral discourse than the traditional modes of philosophical speculation found in formal treatises on morals. Chicago in the 1890s was home to two remarkable institutions, started by two remarkable activist-philosophers, experimenting with ideas and with social change. The first was Hull House, a social settlement, founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889. The second was the Laboratory School, an experimental school opened in 1896 by John Dewey, along with teachers Katherine Camp Mayhew and Anna Camp Edwards. Interaction was constant between the residents of Hull House and the teachers of the Laboratory School, as the participants learned from and taught each other.
