Enhancing Evolution: Posthumanous Dreams And The Moral Complexity Of Biomedical Aspirations, David L. Paulsen, Clark H. Pinnock Apr 2009

Enhancing Evolution: Posthumanous Dreams And The Moral Complexity Of Biomedical Aspirations, David L. Paulsen, Clark H. Pinnock

BYU Studies

A noted academic bioethicist and British media pundit with a named chair at the University of Manchester, John Harris has recently given birth to an odd literary child. His latest book, Enhancing Evolution: The Ethical Case for Making Better People, hails from an esteemed university press, but it is informal and tendentious, often jeering at opponents, both popular and academic. Despite his credentials (an Oxford PhD in philosophy, co-editorship of the British Journal of Medical Ethics, a lengthy curriculum vitae), Harris has created a popular polemic better fitted for the entertaining and energetic repartee of the Daily Show with Jon …

Artistry And Aesthetics In Contemporary Mormon And Iranian Film, Travis T. Anderson Apr 2009

Artistry And Aesthetics In Contemporary Mormon And Iranian Film, Travis T. Anderson

BYU Studies

Almost from their inception, cinematic media and technologies have been accepted and appropriated with surprising enthusiasm by Iranians and Mormons alike. Both cultures appear to have embraced cinema as a natural outgrowth of their lively and longstanding appreciation for art and family-oriented entertainment in general. The author finds that the artistic progress and quality of Mormon cinema as of 2009 has thus far, with few exceptions, fallen short of its potential, while Iranian film artists have made an astonishing number of spiritually profound, culturally insightful, and cinematically sophisticated films despite having formidable obstacles. The author encourages Mormon filmmakers to attain …

Mormon Scientist: The Life And Faith Of Henry Eyring, Ned C. Hill, Henry B. Eyring Apr 2009

Mormon Scientist: The Life And Faith Of Henry Eyring, Ned C. Hill, Henry B. Eyring

BYU Studies

Henry Eyring (1901-1981) is undoubtedly the most celebrated scientist produced within the Mormon faith to date. He published over six hundred scientific papers and about a dozen books, and he received almost every prize science has to offer. His theories form the core of modern chemistry. One of his colleagues said, "The contributions of Dr. Henry Eyring touch practically every field of chemical science and technology in a very fundamental manner." Not only was he a brilliant scientist, he was also a man with deep faith in God and in the restoration of the gospel in modern times. This biography …

Doing The Works Of Abraham: Mormon Polygamy, Its Origin, Practice, And Demise. Kingdom In The West: The Mormons And The American Frontier, Volume 9, B. Carmon Hardy, Kathryn M. Daynes Apr 2009

Doing The Works Of Abraham: Mormon Polygamy, Its Origin, Practice, And Demise. Kingdom In The West: The Mormons And The American Frontier, Volume 9, B. Carmon Hardy, Kathryn M. Daynes

BYU Studies

Joining a significant topic with one of its preeminent scholars is a certain formula for an important book. Such is Doing the Works of Abraham by B. Carmon Hardy. Polygamy shaped nineteenth-century Mormonism's relationship with the remainder of the world, and Hardy has written numerous articles and books on the topic, including Solemn Covenant, named Best Book of the Year for 1992 by the Mormon History Association. The publication of this documentary history of nineteenth-century plural marriage is thus a major event in the ongoing scholarship on the topic.

The subtitle of the book accurately reflects the scope of the …

Romancing The Difference: Kenneth Burke, Bob Jones University, And The Rhetoric Of Religious Fundamentalism, Camille K. Lewis, Brian Jackson Apr 2009

Romancing The Difference: Kenneth Burke, Bob Jones University, And The Rhetoric Of Religious Fundamentalism, Camille K. Lewis, Brian Jackson

BYU Studies

In February 2000 George W. Bush made an early campaign stop at Bob Jones University, an institution that until that very year had prohibited its students from interracial dating. The school's community had no idea his visit would thrust BJU into the national gaze, making it a scapegoat for public political anxieties. Republicans (like Bush's opponent John McCain), Democrats, and journalists alike jumped into the mix to assault BJU publicly and thereby make Bush guilty by association. Though revisions of the interracial policy had already been in the works, Bob Jones III, president of BJU at the time, went on …

Dynasty Of The Holy Grail: Mormonism's Sacred Bloodline, Jesse D. Hurlbut, Vern G. Swanson Apr 2009

Dynasty Of The Holy Grail: Mormonism's Sacred Bloodline, Jesse D. Hurlbut, Vern G. Swanson

BYU Studies

What do the Virgin Mary, King Arthur, and Joseph Smith have in common? This is one of the questions that Vern Swanson attempts to answer in Dynasty of the Holy Grail: Mormonism's Sacred Bloodline. Swanson, who has been director of the Springville Art Museum in Utah since 1980 and who has published extensively in art historical topics, applies his skills to a different body of material in this impressive, large-format volume of over five hundred pages.

The author refers to his own work as a "scattershot miscellany of random thoughts" (411). While some may find in this statement a self-effacing …

Mr. Chipping And Mr. Hundert: Manliness, Media, And The Classical Education, Emily A. Mcdermott Apr 2009

Mr. Chipping And Mr. Hundert: Manliness, Media, And The Classical Education, Emily A. Mcdermott

Classics & Religious Studies Faculty Publication Series

James Hilton’s genial portrayal of a Latin master in a turn-of-the-century British public school, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, was published as a magazine story in England in 1933, in book form in America a year later; it has inspired two film versions, one in 1939, one in 1969, and a full-length Masterpiece Theatre production for television in 2002. In 1994, Ethan Canin published his short story, “The Palace Thief,” presenting the unique tribulations of an ancient history teacher at an elite Virginia prep school; it was made into the 2002 film, The Emperor’s Club. Both stories are predicated on …

Reseña De El Verdugo: Acerca De La Felicidad Y De La Inercia De Las Cosas, Oscar Pereira Zazo

Jeanne D’Arc, Megan Dobbertin Apr 2009

Jeanne D’Arc, Megan Dobbertin

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Jeanne d’Arc is a one-woman theatrical work, written, produced, and performed as Megan Dobbertin’s Capstone Project. Its intention is to explore religious conflict. How does something like organized religion, which was created to be a force of peace and order in a chaotic world, get twisted into violence and discord? All major organized religions profess to be founded on a basis of peace, tolerance, unity, and love. How then do we have notions such as the crusade or the jihad? This piece seeks to explore the causes behind so-called ‘holy’ wars.

It is the story of Joan of Arc, heroine …

The Ethical Visions Of Copyright Law, James Grimmelmann Apr 2009

The Ethical Visions Of Copyright Law, James Grimmelmann

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This symposium essay explores the imagined ethics of copyright: the ethical stories that people tell to justify, make sense of, and challenge copyright law. Such ethical visions are everywhere in intellectual property discourse, and legal scholarship ought to pay more attention to them. The essay focuses on a deontic vision of reciprocity in the author-audience relationship, a set of linked claims that authors and audiences ought to respect each other and express this respect through voluntary transactions.

Versions of this default ethical vision animate groups as seemingly antagonistic as the music industry, file sharers, free software advocates, and Creative Commons. …

The Sand Creek Phenomenon: The Complexity And Difficulty Of Undertaking A Comparative Study Of Genocide Vis-À-Vis The Northern American West, Brenden Rensink Apr 2009

The Sand Creek Phenomenon: The Complexity And Difficulty Of Undertaking A Comparative Study Of Genocide Vis-À-Vis The Northern American West, Brenden Rensink

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This article explores various issues germane to the field of the history of the North American West and the struggle to integrate these issues into the broader field of genocide studies. The primary historiographic example of the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre of Cheyennes and Araphahos in southeastern Colorado by the Colorado Militia illustrates the difficulties of producing objective research on such morally charged historical events. Specific attention is dedicated to understanding the potential value of integrating Native American history into the broader field of genocide studies and to explaining why comparative scholarship has yet to be undertaken in any substantial …

Proper Women/Propertied Women: Federal Land Laws And Gender Order(S) In The Nineteenth-Century Imperial American West, Tonia M. Compton Apr 2009

Proper Women/Propertied Women: Federal Land Laws And Gender Order(S) In The Nineteenth-Century Imperial American West, Tonia M. Compton

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study explores the relationship between federal land policy and women’s property rights in the nineteenth-century American West, analyzing women’s responses to expanded property rights under the 1850 Oregon Donation Act, the Homestead Act of 1862, and the 1887 General Allotment Act, and the ways in which the demands of empire building shaped legislators’ decisions to grant such rights to women. These laws addressed women’s property rights only in relation to their marital status, and solely because women figured prominently in the national project of westward expansion. Women utilized these property rights to both engage in the process of empire …

Place Names In Israeli Sign Language, Bettina Revilla Apr 2009

Place Names In Israeli Sign Language, Bettina Revilla

Theses and Dissertations

One of the obstacles in translating the Hebrew Scriptures into sign language is the lack of signs for Biblical places in most sign languages of the world. What solutions are there? One possibility is to borrow existing signs for Biblical places from another sign language, particularly from Israeli Sign Language, since Israeli Deaf already have signs for the places where they live.

There is a trend towards borrowing foreign place name signs (toponyms), especially when a language does not have a sign. This research provides a corpus of Israeli Sign Language (ISL) toponyms for ninety-two place names, documenting in photos …

Jack And The Beanstalk, April 24-25, 2009, Theatre Arts Discipline

Theatre Programs

University of Minnesota Morris production of Jack and the Beanstalk dramatized by William Glennon and directed by Kelli Tucker.

Synopsis: There is much more to this play than Jack and a beanstalk. Of course, there's the proverbial giant, but there is also the giant's overworked, over-wrought wife, an aria-singing harp, a golden-egg-laying chicken with performance anxiety, and a blue-eyed stranger who looks surprisingly like Jack's long-lost father. Naturally, there's the village at the foot of the beanstalk and the giant's home in the sky, but there is also, 10 years earlier, a sailing ship caught in a storm off the …
