Reflecting On Tiananmen, 20 Years Later

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

China Beat sent out a note to a few scholars and journalists who have carefully watched and written about the events of 1989, asking them to send in short commentaries detailing what they wish more people knew, associated with, or remembered about that spring. Here is the first of their responses. John Gittings is a research associate with the Centre for Chinese Studies at the School of Oriental & African Studies and a former writer and editor at The Guardian. He is the author of The Changing Face of China: From Mao to Marketand numerous other books and articles, including …

Mind The Gap: And 2 Other Mysteries, Jared Brown Apr 2009

Mind The Gap: And 2 Other Mysteries, Jared Brown

IWU Authors Bookshelf

Mind the Gap, a novel, concerns a murder that occurs in London in 2001. Eight students from a university, accompanied by two faculty members, take a "theatrical tour" of London and Stratford, during which they see and discuss twelve plays. But their tour is ruined when one member of the group is murdered. The two other mysteries in Mind the Gap and 2 Other Mysteries, "The Value of Books" and "Midtown Detectives," are relatively brief -- longer than short stories, but decidedly shorter than novels. They both present intriguing tales of suspense, and both are written in styles …

Steampunk: An Exploration In Design, Christopher Mueller Apr 2009

Steampunk: An Exploration In Design, Christopher Mueller

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to detail my first professional costume design job after my unofficial graduation in May 2008. This thesis will serve primarily as a design thesis, and will concentrate the majority of its efforts in the presentation of a final, original costume design for a realized production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street as produced by Duke University. During the course of this presentation, I will seek to detail my own design process and the inspiration and research I used to achieve my goal. I will also discuss the execution of the design, …

The Pessimism Of Horror Cinema: A Comparative Study Between Modernist And Postmodernist Horror Cinema, Michael Jeknavorian Apr 2009

The Pessimism Of Horror Cinema: A Comparative Study Between Modernist And Postmodernist Horror Cinema, Michael Jeknavorian

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative thesis examines levels of pessimism as they relate to modern and postmodern horror cinema. Beyond assumed differences in levels of pessimism between the two genres, the study also examines implicit and explicit moralization of these categories. Specifically, the study questions if postmodern horror cinema's characteristic increase in pessimism is simply a change in the genre's convention, yet a change that is irrespective of either genre's capabilities to moralize. First, the study singularly examines the conventions of each genre as it relates to levels of pessimism. Second, the study discusses works that bridge the two genres. And third, the …

A Bioeconomic Approach To Marriage And The Sexual Division Of Labor, Michael Gurven, Jeffrey Winking, Hillard Kaplan, Christopher Von Rueden, Lisa Mcallister

ESI Publications

Children may be viewed as public goods whereby both parents receive equal genetic benefits yet one parent often invests more heavily than the other. We introduce a microeconomic framework for understanding household investment decisions to address questions concerning conflicts of interest over types and amount of work effort among married men and women. Although gains and costs of marriage may not be spread equally among marriage partners, marriage is still a favorable, efficient outcome under a wide range of conditions. This bioeconomic framework subsumes both cooperative and conflictive views on the sexual division of labor. We test hypotheses concerning marriage markets, …

Greene, Aurelia, Bronx African American History Project Apr 2009

Greene, Aurelia, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Greene grew up in the Morrisania section of The Bronx; Third Avenue and 171st street in the 1940s and ‘50s and it was a racially mixed neighborhood. There were a few African-Americans, mostly Irish, some Italians, and some Jewish people too. Her parents separated and her maternal grandparents, Maud and Harold Russell raised her. Maud was from Trinidad and her grandfather was from St. Vincent. Maud “was Mulatto and she could pass for white”, as it was difficult during the Depression for African-Americans to get jobs, so she worked as a domestic in hotels downtown. She was very conscious …

It’S Just History: Patriotic Education In The Prc, Julia Lovell Apr 2009

It’S Just History: Patriotic Education In The Prc, Julia Lovell

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

It’s now a year since Chinese nationalism had its last big public outing. On April 19, 2008, twelve days after pro-Tibet protesters in Paris tried to grab the Olympic flame from a wheelchair-bound Chinese paralympian, patriotic civilians began mobilising protests around the French embassy in Beijing, and outside Carrefours in at least four different Chinese cities. “Protect Our Tibet! Bless Our Olympics! Boycott Carrefour!” declared banners at demonstrations on the northeast coast. “Say No to French Imperialists!”

As popular outrage grew about perceived anti-Chinese bias in Western reporting on the riots in Tibet and opposition to the torch relay, more …

Investigating The Mind With Heller, Vonnegut, And O'Brien: Psychological Trauma And Narrative Structure In The American War Novel, Daniel Trump

Theses & Honors Papers

The 'American war novel' is an exceedingly broad genre. If taken at its simplest form, it can encompass titles ranging from James Fenimore Cooper's The Spy to Tom Clancy's latest addition to his Rainbow Six series. Joseph Heller's Catch-22, Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, and Tim O'Brien's Going After Cacciato are novels that very simply could be filed away somewhere in that American war novel ether that exists between a high-school library and an airport bookstore, but that would be a disservice to Heller, Vonnegut, and O'Brien. What sets their novels apart from the general milieu of the American war novel …

“A Place Of Paramount Peace”: The Unofficial Nationalism Of An Officially Peaceful Movement, Kari Irwin Apr 2009

“A Place Of Paramount Peace”: The Unofficial Nationalism Of An Officially Peaceful Movement, Kari Irwin

Honors Projects

In this paper, I argue that despite the Sanstha’s official message of peace, ecumenism and tolerance, the group’s rhetoric and activities reveal an unofficial side of the Sanstha that may foster intolerance, fundamentalism, and, possibly, a Hindu nationalist agenda. This connection is not to be found at an official, or even public, level. In order to accurately assess the movement’s role as a transnational Gujarati Hindu movement, we must reach a middle ground between the currently polarized scholarship, and critically, but empathetically, examine the Sanstha’s objectives as a global movement.

The Trouble With Nationalism: ‘Englishness’ In The Quartets Of Britten, Tippett, And Vaughan Williams, Sarah Elaine Robinson Apr 2009

The Trouble With Nationalism: ‘Englishness’ In The Quartets Of Britten, Tippett, And Vaughan Williams, Sarah Elaine Robinson

Music Honors Theses

This thesis is, in general terms, an examination of the need for nationalism as a defining characteristic in music. Specifically, it deals with a term, ‘Englishness’, which is thrown lightly about in criticism and biographies by English writers with greater frequency throughout the twentieth century up until the Second World War. Through three quartets written near the end of that war by three vastly different composers, each representing a different variant of ‘Englishness’ (though all connected back to Purcell) this phenomenon will be dissected. Of particular consideration are the political and cultural atmosphere of England in the 1940s, the overall …

Tiananmen Moon: Excerpt, Philip J. Cunningham Apr 2009

Tiananmen Moon: Excerpt, Philip J. Cunningham

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

“Tiananmen,” whispers Chai Ling.

“What?” I ask, comprehending without comprehension.

“I’d like to see Tiananmen, one last time.”

We skip the turn to the train station—she and Wang Li had been talking about catching the first train out of Beijing– and instead continue east on Chang’an. As the car approaches the familiar student-controlled zone around Tiananmen Square, I try to make sense of what we are doing.

I had just delivered to the international media a candid interview with a wanted student leader who said she is going to run away, while speaking forthrightly about imminent bloodshed and the desire …
