Digital Traces Of 1989
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
China Beat sent out a note to a few scholars and journalists who have carefully watched and written about the events of 1989, asking them to send in short commentaries detailing what they wish more people knew, associated with, or remembered about that spring. We ran the first piece in this limited series, by John Gittings, on April 23, the second, by Jonathan Unger, on April 26. This is the third piece.
Yang Guobin is an Associate Professor of Asian and Middle Eastern Cultures at Barnard College. He has written essays on many subjects, including the students protests of 1989, …
Why Theatre? A Study Of Robert Wilson, Rachel Elinor Bennett
Why Theatre? A Study Of Robert Wilson, Rachel Elinor Bennett
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Wilson’s unusual background influenced both the avantgarde nature of Wilson’s theatre and the humanity present in his work. Wilson accepts the people in his life as they are without trying to change them or ignore those differences. Wilson gives these people and their perspective, which society so often rejects, a voice. He sees art where others see a problem. Wilson’s theatre looks like nothing else, but his respect and acceptance of others, even those who are different and almost invisible to most of society, are just as innovative and refreshing to see in theatre.

Reprint: Conflicts And Clashes Are The Social Norm, Sun Liping
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
China Beat checks in regularly with Xujun Eberlein at her blog Inside-Out China, and we’ve run pieces by Xujun in the past. In early April, she ran another in her series of translations of Chinese materials. We thought this continuation of her translation of Professor Sun Liping‘s works on social protest was interesting enough to reproduce in full (with Xujun’s permission).
Note: About a month ago I translated an essay from Prof. Sun titled “The Biggest Threat Is not Social Unrest but Societal Breakdown.” His rational and perceptive view attracted wide interest from readers, and that post was linked by …

Natural Resources As A Source Of Conflict In The Middle East, Alanna C. Torres
Natural Resources As A Source Of Conflict In The Middle East, Alanna C. Torres
Pitzer Senior Theses
The purpose of my thesis was to counter Samuel Huntington’s argument that the world’s conflict is over differing civilizations, religions, or cultures. Whether or not religion is declining or growing, it cannot be used to portray the world in a 'cosmic war,' or a battle between 'good and evil'. Natural resources, not religions, rest at the basis for the Islamic fundamentalist and militant movement due to its response to the Western structural pressures that are modernizing Muslim societies. Oil and water become vital tools for exercising power and authority of one nation over another, and are identified as the true …

Finding Myself Here, Cari Freno
Theses and Dissertations
Both the natural and civilized worlds establish a context within which I may understand my own existence. My search for “self” and the emotive qualities of life within these contexts provides the impetus for my work. I create juxtapositions: from found art assemblages to, more recently, intimate experiences in public park environments. Within these curated experiences I challenge myself to open up to unknown experiences derived from my relationship to the landscape and the life forms found within. My videos are a kind of self-surveillance fostering absurdly promiscuous behavior when I am alone, in front of a camera. These conjured …

Praxis And Theōria: Heidegger’S “Violent” Interpretation, Megan E. Altman
Praxis And Theōria: Heidegger’S “Violent” Interpretation, Megan E. Altman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper attempts to mark out new ground in the connections between the philosophical writings of Martin Heidegger and Aristotle by posing an interesting question that has never been addressed. Both writers devote much of their early thoughts to questions concerning human beings' practical ways of understanding. However, in their later thoughts Heidegger and Aristotle suddenly seem to completely change the subject to ideal or transcendental ways of understanding. At first glance these ideal modes of human apprehension seem to have nothing to do with each other. Yet, Heidegger and Aristotle seem to have similar motives for turning away from …
The Imagination And The Real, Thomas Ryan Gothrup
The Imagination And The Real, Thomas Ryan Gothrup
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis challenges the sedentary nature of living vicariously through the television, whether it be watching sports or playing video games. Since the advent of professional sports spectators have become accustomed to stadiums stuffed with people cheering on their favorite teams. The television substitutes for this visceral experience and allows viewers to live surrogate lives without leaving the living room. Ultimately, I see this thesis as a social commentary on the impact of sports and media in our society. This project highlights the sociological implications of the loss of interpersonal contact perpetuated by media.
Culture And A Connection, Chris Arias
Culture And A Connection, Chris Arias
Theses and Dissertations
Culture and a Connection In the Spanish province of Asturias, many homes built in the16th and 17th centuries are constructed of dry-stacked stone and large timbers for floor joists, rafters, decking. They are topped with large, irregularly shaped roof slates. Alongside many of these homes stands a rectangular granary called a cabazo. The cabazo, similarly constructed, is a stand-alone structure about twenty feet tall, six feet wide and twenty feet long. The main portion, (the storage area), stands ten feet off the ground atop two large, tapered columns. The upper level is typically separated form the lower level by a …
