The Creation, Development, And Operation Of A Spanish-Language News Division, Jason William Tarr

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

My Honors Capstone is the creation, development and operation of a Spanish-language news division on theSyracuseUniversitycampus. I chose to start this division at CitrusTV, the oldest and largest student-run television station in theUnited States. At the heart of the Spanish-language news division, is the Spanish-language news broadcast I created: CitrusTV Noticias en Espanol (CitrusTV News in Spanish). The broadcast is a thirty-minute news program covering campus, local, national and international news for theSyracuseUniversity, andSyracusearea, communities. It is student run and includesSyracuseUniversityundergraduate and graduate students from nearly every college at the University.

Having the broadcast is more important than ever because …

The World Through Young Eyes: A Photo/Essay Exploration Of How Children Perceive Their Environment In The Modern Day, Erin Mulvehill May 2009

The World Through Young Eyes: A Photo/Essay Exploration Of How Children Perceive Their Environment In The Modern Day, Erin Mulvehill

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

My Capstone project is an exploration of how children perceive their environment. This exploration stems from my curiosity to know what it would have been like to grow up in a different part of the world. This analysis was executed through the mediums of both photography and writing.

Implementing the use of e-mail communication via the Internet, I got in contact with fifth grade teachers from Overseas Schools in countries across the world. The seven countries currently represented in this project areIceland,Poland,Greece,Lebanon,Sri Lanka,Japanand theUnited States of America. Additionally, studies are currently in the process of being conducted inThailand,Burkina Faso, andPeru. …

How A Work Changes In Response To The Work Itself: Researching Civil War Photography, A Case Study, Rose Margolis May 2009

How A Work Changes In Response To The Work Itself: Researching Civil War Photography, A Case Study, Rose Margolis

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This piece combines my two passions of history and television/film. I have been able to combine these two passions by doing two years of research on Civil War photography and sketch artists.

My original intention was to create a documentary about this topic, but due to unanswered questions about copyright I quickly abandoned this idea. I then moved onto writing a screenplay after slightly narrowing my topic to focus on three photographers: Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner, and Timothy H. O’Sullivan. My intent was to focus on how they made the photographs, their relationship to each other, and why Gardner and …

Archbold Stadium The Story Of ‘78, Gordon Christopher Brookes May 2009

Archbold Stadium The Story Of ‘78, Gordon Christopher Brookes

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Archbold Stadium, The Story of ’78, was inspired by an exhibit at the Syracuse University Admissions Office. The exhibit was a number of old postcards, and one of these was of Archbold Stadium. The stadium was home to Syracuse football from 1907 to 1978, and was home to such greats as Ernie Davis, Jim Brown, Floyd Little, and many others. The 1959 team that played there won Syracuse’s only national football championship, and was home to its only Heisman winner. When it was built in 1907 by John D. Archbold, it was the largest concrete stadium in the world, costing …

A Crucial Juncture: The Paracosmic Approach To The Private Worlds Of Lewis Carroll And The Brontës, Kristin Petrella May 2009

A Crucial Juncture: The Paracosmic Approach To The Private Worlds Of Lewis Carroll And The Brontës, Kristin Petrella

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Many famous authors have had paracosms—imaginary worlds created in childhood that are marked by very detailed conventions, like languages or dialects, history, culture, geography, publications, politics, military, and sometimes even deities. Three such authors are Charlotte Brontë, Emily Brontë and Lewis Carroll. These authors had an intense and lasting attachment to their paracosms, and this relationship influenced their later work.

Since the study of paracosms has just arisen in the last two decades or so, a majority of the work done on the paracosms of famous authors has been concentrated in three traditional spheres: literary, biographical, and psychological. When we …

Don, Obligation Et Reconnaissance Dans Les Lettres D’Une Péruvienne De Graffigny, Olivier M. Delers May 2009

Don, Obligation Et Reconnaissance Dans Les Lettres D’Une Péruvienne De Graffigny, Olivier M. Delers

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

Much Ado About "Nothings" : Ray Johnson And Fluxus, Tracy Ditolla May 2009

Much Ado About "Nothings" : Ray Johnson And Fluxus, Tracy Ditolla

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Ray Johnson was a performance and collage artist who had a career that spanned six decades, yet there is relatively little known or written about him. After interviewing his friends and acquaintances I will bring to light new information and insights on Johnson’s work. In this thesis I discuss the performance art of Johnson and compare it to pieces by Fluxus and Happenings artists. I also address the influences that Zen Buddhism had on his life and work as well as his rejection of the established art world. I argue that Johnson was possibly the only artist to date who …

The Restriction Of Civil Liberties During Times Of Crisis: The Evolution Of America's Response To National Military Threats, Matthew D. Fairman May 2009

The Restriction Of Civil Liberties During Times Of Crisis: The Evolution Of America's Response To National Military Threats, Matthew D. Fairman

Government and International Relations Honors Papers

This treatise explores the nature and significance of the threat posed to civil liberties during times of major national military crisis and evaluates changes in the nature of wartime repression over the course of American history. It tests the thesis that the evolution in Americans’ response to such crises has not been a simple progression toward increasing restraint on the part of federal, state, and local policymakers, as is sometimes assumed. Rather, major twentieth and twenty-first century developments related to the nature of threats to American national security and government capabilities to covertly repress dissent have interacted with evolutionary changes …

Henry Steel Olcott : From Civil War Veteran To Sinalese Buddhist Nationalist, A Case Study In International Religious Activism, Jennifer Proch May 2009

Henry Steel Olcott : From Civil War Veteran To Sinalese Buddhist Nationalist, A Case Study In International Religious Activism, Jennifer Proch

Honors Theses

The nineteenth century was marked by a great deal of religious growth and change. Throughout the world, religion took on new forms, both with the introduction and expansion of movements like the Theosophical Society, and with the revival and reform of older faiths. Cultural exchange and broader exposure to religious ideals, in the form of missions and education were also important features of the century. At a cursory glance, an American Civil War veteran and a Buddhist monk from Ceylon would seem to share little in common, but during this time of increasing interconnectedness these two figures made contact. Henry …

Lines Of Nation, Lines Of Flight : Retroping Immigration Policy, Jessica Thaller May 2009

Lines Of Nation, Lines Of Flight : Retroping Immigration Policy, Jessica Thaller

Honors Theses

This thesis studies the rhetoric of U.S. immigration policy, specifically as related to Mexican immigration to the United States. Using Kent Ono and John Sloop’s theory of discourse, it examines the rhetoric employed in the Secure Fence Act (SFA) of 2006 and its turns towards wartime rhetoric, immigrant dehumanization, and immigrant deviance. It then contradicts these turns to those seen in the rhetoric of Hometown Associations (HTAs), “outlaw” discourses that operate by systems of logic different from the dominant logic of the SFA. HTAs emphasize family/cultural connections, unique financial considerations, and the liminal existence of the immigrant. More importantly, they …

The Romantic Heritage: Dohnanyi's Compositional Language In His Six Concert Etudes, Op. 28, Michael A. Yenny May 2009

The Romantic Heritage: Dohnanyi's Compositional Language In His Six Concert Etudes, Op. 28, Michael A. Yenny

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Even though Ernst von Dohnányi (1877-1960) straddles the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, his Romantic compositional language remains unaffected by his twentieth century contemporaries. The present study will establish Dohnányi’s Romantic heritage by examining his Six Concert Etudes, Op. 28 according to Romantic Style musical parameter characteristics. This study is relevant because these characteristics in conjunction with these etudes have yet to be examined. This demonstration of the Romantic Style musical parameter characteristics in conjunction with these etudes offers a new contribution to the body of scholarly writing.

The document is divided into three chapters and a bibliography. Chapter 1 consists …

In Passing, Julia Allisson Cost May 2009

In Passing, Julia Allisson Cost

Scripps Senior Theses

My intentions for "In Passing" were to build the beginnings of an education philosophy through a richly varied choreographic process. I wanted my dancers to come away from this work with a heightened eagerness to explore the unfamiliar and an increased confidence in their ability to support one another and be supported, and I wanted to learn to more effectively and tenderly lead a group of many different personalities through a long-term creative experience. I think we have been successful.

A Cross-Cultural, Comparative Analysis Of The Domestic Violence Policies Of Nicaragua And Russia, Jo-Ann Della Giustina May 2009

A Cross-Cultural, Comparative Analysis Of The Domestic Violence Policies Of Nicaragua And Russia, Jo-Ann Della Giustina

Journal of International Women's Studies

This is a cross-cultural comparative analysis of the domestic violence policies of Nicaragua and Russia. While these two countries have striking differences, they both had socialist revolutions that established workers and farmers governments. The Soviet Union was the main economic and political support for Nicaragua following the 1979 Frente Sandinista Para Liberación Nacional (FSLN - Sandinista Front for National Liberation) revolution.

This article examines the domestic violence policies of post-Soviet Russia and Nicaragua. While both countries have serious domestic violence problems, only Nicaragua is taking an aggressive stance to eradicate the problem. The Russian government barely even acknowledges that there …
