Sex Trafficking And Decriminalized Prostitution In Rhode Island, Melanie Shapiro May 2009

Sex Trafficking And Decriminalized Prostitution In Rhode Island, Melanie Shapiro

Senior Honors Projects

Rhode Island is the only state in the United States where prostitution is decriminalized indoors. Since decriminalization in 1980, the sex industry has expanded and Rhode Island has become a destination for commercial sex in New England. Rhode Island is one of only three states that have not had a human trafficking prosecution. Rhode Island has had no prosecutions of sex trafficking since the state anti-trafficking law was passed in 2007. The goal of this project was to research the history of decriminalization, gather information on Asian massage parlor brothels, and determine if sex trafficking is occurring in these establishments. …

Starring Mark Twain And Hank Morgan: Performance In A Connecticut Yankee, Lisa Mcgunigal May 2009

Starring Mark Twain And Hank Morgan: Performance In A Connecticut Yankee, Lisa Mcgunigal

Senior Honors Projects

Samuel Clemens, in his persona of Mark Twain, is recognized as one of the preeminent performers of the nineteenth century both on stage and in print. Twain clearly reveals his views on performance in his book, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. In reviewing the text of the novel, I have examined the aspects and forms of performance Twain disclosed in relation to his characters. I have focused on: importance of dialect, power of costume changes, and the significance of settings.

A Connecticut Yankee (1889) describes the journeys of Hank Morgan, a time traveler from nineteenth-century Connecticut, into sixth-century …

The Religious Other As Neighbor, Lawrence Frizzell May 2009

The Religious Other As Neighbor, Lawrence Frizzell

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

Many stories are told about antagonism between Christians and Jews, especially in countries with a large Jewish minority. The history of persecution should be told along with the lessons learned for our time. A brief review of examples whose participants were neighbors, either in reality or in principle, may be instructive. This paper will move through the centuries in a rapid survey, recalling friendly contacts or benign exchanges between Christians and Jews.

A Consideration Of The "Apocryphon Of James", Katie Kreutter May 2009

A Consideration Of The "Apocryphon Of James", Katie Kreutter

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"After reading the Apocryphon of James, also known as the Gospel of James, I am intrigued by the way that the text seems to contain both significant parallels and unique dissimilarities to the canonical gospels found in the New Testament. Although there is not a scholarly consensus in regards to an explanation for these apparent contradictions within the document, the historical background surrounding the written account seems to offer some indication of the original author’s motivations and intentions in writing it."

"Alamogordo", Ron A. Ambrosetti

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The road into Clovis had been tortuous but tinted with the colors of the New Mexico desert subtly touched by the incipient autumn. Driving a military Jeep with a comrade from their former B-17 squadrons in Europe, Joseph Angelina thought how different it would be to fly in this clear, dry air, so remarkably pure after his recent years of trying to locate enemy targets in cloudy and moody Europe."

Take The Time To Walk, Emily Lalka

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The busyness of life distracts me from the One I long to be with. Sometimes life just takes over, and I get busy writing this paper and reading that chapter, prioritizing what’s due first. Then I remember that God is always first and I stop to revaluate my priorities. I take the time to refocus and be with my Creator. The best times I have with God are when I’m taking a walk outside."

Easter Came Early That Year: A Eulogy To My Wife, Dan Edes

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The moss crumbles under my nails as I scrape away the overgrowth obscuring my grandfather's name. It flakes away into powder; while a light breeze scatters the remnants over the broken lamb marking my youngest brother's grave. I never knew Michael. He survived only days in the hospital unable to breathe correctly. Ironically, beside him is Bill, another brother undone by an ailing chest: pneumonia compounded with HIV/AIDS, or is it vice versa? Anyway, that was 1985 and HIV was still the gay man's disease and now, seven years …

High & Low Christology: Examining "Jesus & The Syrophoenician Woman", Jodi Schott May 2009

High & Low Christology: Examining "Jesus & The Syrophoenician Woman", Jodi Schott

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"In this pericope, Jesus and his disciples headed to Tyre, where Jesus continued his ministry in another location. When Jesus entered the house, the gospel writer claims that he wanted no one to know about his presence. However, in that line the gospel writer said that Jesus could not escape notice. Perhaps it was Jesus’ intention all along to be noticed. He was calling people to him—in this case, the Syrophoenician woman."

On Love, Respect, And Joy, Tom Dinardo May 2009

On Love, Respect, And Joy, Tom Dinardo

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The most important thing parents must do every day of their life is to take responsibility of raising their children. Jeanine and I take that responsibility very seriously, because we believe that children are a gift from God. Children need nurturing and love, and they need to be taught to respect life and to consider the rewards and hardships that come with it. The best place for children to learn about life is from their parents."

Can One Be Spiritual But Not Religious?, Roger Haight May 2009

Can One Be Spiritual But Not Religious?, Roger Haight

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"How many times have you heard the statement that "I am spiritual, but not religious." It is so common that it could easily qualify as a contemporary cliché. But what does it mean? In a former time to be spiritual was to be religious: they meant pretty much the same thing. Today, however, spirituality can refer to a hundred different things, from self-care to mysticism, from yoga to a psychological power of positive thinking. And the diversity of the different kinds of religion, from the recognized world religions to …

Reflections On Psalm 137, Robert Brimlow May 2009

Reflections On Psalm 137, Robert Brimlow

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"In the communal prayer life of the church - namely the liturgies of the Eucharist and the Divine Office, as well as the Book of Common Prayer to name a fewwe Christians tend to be selective in our focus on the Psalms. We do give at least a tacit recognition to the truth expressed about the Psalms from the saints who have preceded us: Athanasius called them “an epitome of the whole Scripture,” a view echoed by Luther’s insight that they are “a little bible and summary of the …

The Promethean, Volume 17, Contents May Be Hot, 2009, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

During our first meeting, I let the staff know my expectations for the 2008-2009 Promethean edition. Like previous years, I imagined fresh, bold writing and raw talent. With the same inspiration, I imagined a bolder journal; a journal with power and authenticity; a journal that would forever be memorable for the quality, quantity and impression. The Promethean staff grounded these ideas, while the contributors shaped them. I've never felt prouder of The Promethean. Graduating and leaving the position to Kristine never scared me; I knew we had the same visions, and I give all the credit to her.

"The Mirror Turn Lamp": Natural-Supernatural In Yeats, Cleston Lee Armstrong Iii May 2009

"The Mirror Turn Lamp": Natural-Supernatural In Yeats, Cleston Lee Armstrong Iii

Dissertations

The supernatural portrayed in Yeats represents a carefully constructed convergence of all major themes in his canon. Yeats's first exposure to myth, the supernatural, and magic occurs in the 1890s when he worked as an editor of William Blake and Irish fairy lore. This experience at once inspired Yeats to explore mysticism and to shroud his own collected works in mystery. With the onset of modernity and the age of criticism this period ushered in, however, he was unable to capitalize on the spiritual as first imagined. As mere aesthetic, peculiar illuminations of the immaterial world Yeats so intensely sought …
