The Dismissive Actually, Alexander Egner May 2009

The Dismissive Actually, Alexander Egner

Theses and Dissertations

This project is about giving in to the impulse of ideas. My mind is a little messy and cluttered, swirling with bits of stimuli. The spark of an idea happens when the bits collide. I prefer not to initiate or control the process so much as keep it fed and active. Through graphic design, I bear witness to these ideas, giving them form as a series of visible, tangible objects. Viewed comprehensively, the work establishes an ongoing chronicle of my creative life and mind.

Ethnomedical And Biomedical Health Care And Healing Practices Among The Rathwa Adivasi Of Kadipani Village, Gujarat State, India, Margaret A. Karnyski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Rathwa of Kadipani village are adivasi (original inhabitants, tribe) residing in a rural part of Gujarat State, India. Primarily farmers, the Rathwa live in an area where development-related projects, such as mineral mining and damming on the Narmada River, are increasingly impacting their livelihood, health status, and quality of life. The local economy is impacted by uncertainty regarding access to water from the Narmada River, concerns related to the extraction of minerals from a mine in Kadipani, and economic issues that arise when the primary wage earner of the household becomes ill.

This dissertation addresses Rathwa health care practices, …

Some Combinatorial Structures Constructed From Modular Leonard Triples, Jessica Sobkowiak May 2009

Some Combinatorial Structures Constructed From Modular Leonard Triples, Jessica Sobkowiak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Let V denote a vector space of finite positive dimension. An ordered triple of linear operators on V is said to be a Leonard triple whenever for each choice of element of the triple there exists a basis of V with respect to which the matrix representing the chosen element is diagonal and the matrices representing the other two elements are irreducible tridiagonal. A Leonard triple is said to be modular whenever for each choice of element there exists an antiautomorphism of End(V) which fixes the chosen element and swaps the other two elements. We study combinatorial structures …

They Chose China Now At Youtube

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Last year, China Beat ran a review of Shuibo Wang’s fascinating documentary,They Chose China. The documentary traces the stories of American POWs who chose to stay in China after the 1953 Korean War armistice.

At the time that we ran that review, we noted that the video was hard to come by. Now, however, the entire documentary has been posted on YouTube, in five parts. We’ve posted all five parts below (and here are direct links to YouTube for Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, and Part V). Those interested in learning more might also be interested in …

The (Model) Un Comes To Beida, Alec Ash

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

In our ongoing effort to draw attention from time to time to blogs about China we come across and like (as we did in this recent post), we want to let our readers know about an intriguing one we’ve just started following. Six, maintained by Alec Ash, was recently singled out by CNReviews (another new addition to our RSS feed list, which we’ll doubtless start linking to regularly now that we’ve discovered it) as one of the “ten eclectic China blogs” worth following.

Rather than explain Six’s features to you, we asked Ash to let us repost a piece from …

Comparative Study Of The Ritual Aspects Of Western And Asian Performance, Hyung Don Lee May 2009

Comparative Study Of The Ritual Aspects Of Western And Asian Performance, Hyung Don Lee

Theses and Dissertations

This comparative study focuses on ritual aspects of Western and Asian performance. We may say that ritual in contemporary theater production has limitation to become realization. The limitation arises from contemporary period’s nature. We know that these days we do not have common or collective psyche. However, some theatre artists are trying to get back ritual function and process to recover real communion between spectator and performer throughout performance.
