Heritage Braided, Akiko B. Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

The awareness of marginality, oppression, and hierarchy at an early age directly influences the creation of work specific to my identity as a woman of color. Born and raised on an island in the Pacific Ocean, I was aware of my sense of location and space relative to the world. The vast ocean separating me from the ‘mainland’ created a specific understanding of marginality, of what is “main” and what is “minor,” and how these categorical placements continued from my youth to ongoing perpetuation. The work I create has a subtle and persistent investigation into my identity as a socio-economic …

Collapse, Mia Feuer May 2009

Collapse, Mia Feuer

Theses and Dissertations

Through large sculptural works that are often caricatures of representational objects, my work explores the complicated moments and tangled histories of childhood Jewish schooling in Winnipeg and travels to Israel and Palestine as an adult. My thesis exhibition Collapse, as well as most of my graduate work, examines my investigation through manmade constructions that control and restrict or unite and connect the movement of others. Sculptures about a destroyed bridge’s imagined longing for exotic places, a giant onion serving as a resuscitation mechanism against tear gas or a construction crane to Armageddon are some examples of work that explore the …

Understanding China’S “Angry Youth”, Teresa Wright May 2009

Understanding China’S “Angry Youth”, Teresa Wright

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Two things that China Beat has been tracking since we began are Chinese nationalism and youth attitudes in the PRC today (those interested in these issues might check out Alec Ash’s recent posting that addresses youth nationalism in regard to the 5/8 anniversary). It’s no surprise, then, that we were interested in learning more about an event at the Brookings Institution that brought these topics together (Evan Osnosmentioned his participation at his blog).

So we turned to Teresa Wright, one of the people who shared the stage with Osnos at the panel, to fill us in on the discussion that …

The Hunger Strike Begins, Philip J. Cunningham May 2009

The Hunger Strike Begins, Philip J. Cunningham

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

The idea that the campus was under student control struck me as a dangerous illusion. Bright and others said campus life had changed for the better, and in the aftermath of May 4, I could see evidence of the soaring change in spirit. But what if the whiff of freedom turned into a mockery of the same, a transient window of openness that served to make people implicate themselves? It had happened before in the 1950s, when Mao urged “a hundred schools of thought to contend,” only to punish those who expressed themselves too freely.

To date, the campus strike …

Charles De Gaulle's Influence On Contemporary French Culture And On France's Rejection Of Genetically Modified Food, Susanna Lenore Foxworthy May 2009

Charles De Gaulle's Influence On Contemporary French Culture And On France's Rejection Of Genetically Modified Food, Susanna Lenore Foxworthy

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Although the Gaullist movement declined after violent student and worker rebellions in 1968, I propose that de Gaulle's distrust of American policy coupled with his strong belief in French sovereignty continues to influence contemporary France. These two factors are the primary reasons why the French strongly disapprove ofthe production and consumption of genetically modified food not only in their country but also in the entire European Union.

One Year Ago May 2009

One Year Ago

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

A year ago, we were glued to our televisions and computers, like so many others in China and around the world, watching a tragedy unfold in Sichuan. The news we saw from the earthquake zone was bleak and heartbreaking.

Several news sites have run memorials, one-year on, and we’ve selected a few of those in the reader below. We also point you to some of the coverage we ran atChina Beat in the days that followed.

1.One of the things Kathryn Edgerton-Tarpley stressed in a piece for China Beat last May was that Chinese volunteerism was not a brand-new phenomenon, …

On A Saturday, Thoughts And Revelations, Maria Pithara

Theses and Dissertations

A favorite poet, a strange woman on the beach, pictures I love to look at. Back yard voyeurism, some thoughts on portraiture and why I couldn’t be a photographer. Strange rituals that make sense. Unexpected revelations. Two kinds of light. This essay presents part of the constellation of thoughts, images and ideas that have informed my most recent video installation, Saturday.

Fountains, Toshiyuki Tanaka May 2009

Fountains, Toshiyuki Tanaka

Theses and Dissertations

Most of my works are figurative and depend on my memory when I was modeling. I’d like to attempt to clarify the memories through process of modeling. When I model a human, it might not be a perfect imitation of body because it’s a representation of memories, and it’s affected by memories. It is not important to imitate the human form, but I’m interested in gathering memories and giving a form to them. I’m interested in life force and transience of life, so I was looking for a material which can represent these qualities. When I am engaged glass, I …

May 10, 1989: Demonstration Of Ten Thousand Bicycles, Philip J. Cunningham May 2009

May 10, 1989: Demonstration Of Ten Thousand Bicycles, Philip J. Cunningham

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

For a few days there it seemed that the successful student march of May 4 would be the last of the big demos and soon everyone would be back on campus attending classes again. Railing against this rather pleasant and natural inclination, strident wall posters at Shida and Beida called for continuing the student strike. One of the more florid campus wall posters that I managed to snap a photo of was a florid eulogy to the Great Hall of the People as a symbol of representative rule. The dark message, written on May 5, 1989 was at odds with …

Creating Memory: J.G. Ballard And Shanghai, Robert Bickers May 2009

Creating Memory: J.G. Ballard And Shanghai, Robert Bickers

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

When news of Shanghai-born J.G. Ballard’s death reached China Beat, we asked friend-of-the-blog Robert Bickers, author of Britain in China and Empire Made Me: An Englishman Adrift in Shanghai, to share his thoughts about the writer with us. He was kind enough to oblige, passing on these thoughts on Ballard’s most famous novel, Empire of the Sun (subject, of course, of a Spielberg film), and also another work of fiction that uses Shanghai as a backdrop.

They own him and disown him. “My brother was in his class at school,” one might tell you. “Why did he tell those lies …

Blind Signal Detection And Identification Over The 2.4ghz Ism Band For Cognitive, Omar Zakaria May 2009

Blind Signal Detection And Identification Over The 2.4ghz Ism Band For Cognitive, Omar Zakaria

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

'It is not a lack of spectrum. It is an issue of efficient use of the available spectrum"--conclusions of the FCC Spectrum Policy Task Force.

There is growing interest towards providing broadband communication with high bit rates and throughput, especially in the ISM band, as it was an ignition of innovation triggered by the FCC to provide, to some extent, a regulation-free band that anyone can use. But with such freedom comes the risk of interference and more responsibility to avoid causing it. Therefore, the need for accurate interference detection and identification, along with good blind detection capabilities are inevitable. …

Structure And Repetition, Jon Sutter May 2009

Structure And Repetition, Jon Sutter

Theses and Dissertations

This work is the result of an exploration into the relationship of form and pattern. Its inspiration began as an experiment where certain two dimensional graphical patterns were interpreted as three dimensional elements in a lattice-like assembly. The resulting compositions are built entirely of MDF, and each piece is made from multiple copies of one or two identically shaped parts that are joined with shallow grooves. Some of the pieces resemble Asian architectural lattices as well as the scientific models of molecules in crystals. Often, the flat components seem to undulate in space or twist into impossible shapes. Although the …

The Rise Of The Muslim Brotherhood In Egypt: A Cold War Context, Azaam M. Samad May 2009

The Rise Of The Muslim Brotherhood In Egypt: A Cold War Context, Azaam M. Samad

Whittier Scholars Program

The Cold War, in many ways shaped the world we live in and how it operates at the international level, especially with regards to United States foreign policy. Due to the Cold War framework and the environment that it provided is it possible that other pre-existing social movements could be encouraged to act within the nations they reside? And if so, how did they act in response? This paper will utilize the level of analysis framework as well as the concepts of the security dilemma spiral to analyze two seperate case studies: the Cold War and the rise of Muslim …

Ideal Thin And The Female Athlete Triad, Jaclyn Grabowski

Whittier Scholars Program

This project addresses the problematic ideology of thinness and athleticism that is pushed on female athletes. The author acknowledges that this issue is based on sociological and anthropological views that have a pervasive effect on the way women of all sizes and all sports view their worth both inside and outside the athletic world.

Examining An Acute Environmental Trigger For Dysfunctional Eating: Measuring The Immediate Impact Of Fat Disparagement Media Exposure And Its Effects On Body Dissatisfaction, Negative Affect, Weight Control Practice Intentions, And Sub-Clinical Binge Eating Behavior In College Women, Susan Himes May 2009

Examining An Acute Environmental Trigger For Dysfunctional Eating: Measuring The Immediate Impact Of Fat Disparagement Media Exposure And Its Effects On Body Dissatisfaction, Negative Affect, Weight Control Practice Intentions, And Sub-Clinical Binge Eating Behavior In College Women, Susan Himes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Binge eating is a maladaptive eating practice associated with unhealthy weight control methods (vomiting, laxative abuse) and the development of weight gain and obesity. Isolating psychological and environmental variables that trigger binge eating can prevent or potentially moderate eating disturbance. Previous research implicates media exposure as an environmental contributor to psychological and eating disturbance. The current study sought to uncover whether fat stigmatization media exposure is an acute environmental trigger for psychological disturbance and binge initiation by dismantling fat media messages and experimentally manipulating messages. Undergraduate women (N=197) were assigned to one of four media message conditions: a fat negative …

Blind Synchronization And Detection Of Nyquist Pulse Shaped Qam Signals, Evren Terzi May 2009

Blind Synchronization And Detection Of Nyquist Pulse Shaped Qam Signals, Evren Terzi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes a blind receiver for the Nyquist pulse shaped quadratureamplitude modulation (QAM) signals. The focus is on single carrier signals. The blind receiver includes the estimation of the symbol rate, the roll-off factor of the filter, the optimal sample phase, the frequency offset, the phase offset and as well as the correction of frequency and phase offsets.

The blind receiver is proposed for the cognitive radio applications. Cognitive radios are intelligent devices which can adapt themselves according to its user and its environment, i.e. they are aware of the user and the environment. Another importance of cognitive radios …

I have in my hot little hand the December 2008 issue (Volume 9, Number 4) of a hot little journal from Routledge Press, Inter-Asia Cultural Studies.
