La Voz Y La Violencia Invisible En El Cuento Caribeño Contemporáneo, Carmen Bourbon
La Voz Y La Violencia Invisible En El Cuento Caribeño Contemporáneo, Carmen Bourbon
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Some short stories by Caribbean women writers feature a female protagonist speaking in her own voice, telling her own story and coming to understand herself and her circumstances. In other texts, the protagonist's voice is challenged, overwhelmed or replaced by other voices, and she continues suffering psychologically. We examine the relationship between changes in the narrative voice and the female protagonist’s fate in twelve texts, demonstrating the consequences of her ability or inability to tell her story.
Each text displays a distinct correspondence between the protagonist’s life and how it is narrated. In "Masticar una rosa", "El lado frío de …
Borat As Tragicomedy Of Anti Us-Americanism, Alexei Lalo
Borat As Tragicomedy Of Anti Us-Americanism, Alexei Lalo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Alexei Lalo discusses in his article "Borat as Tragicomedy of Anti US-Americanism" the 2006 mockumentary in the context of stereotypes and clichés that exist about the United States and elsewhere, particularly in Europe. Anti US-Americanism is arguably at the core of this project, but Borat's creators seem to mock not only US-Americans, but also those who invent and practice clichés about the U.S. Lalo draws parallels between Sacha Baron Cohen's work and the legacies of Lenny Bruce and Charlie Chaplin (most notably his late film A King in New York). Of the numerous socio-cultural problems of the United States Borat …

Female Cfl (Chinese As Foreign Language) Learners' Acquisition Of Native-Like Features Of Feminine Chinese Speech, Shu-Ling Ko
Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to evaluate the correlation between participants' acquisition of feminine Chinese speech patterns and time lived in Chinese speaking areas. These patterns include final particles, key words, request words, sentence patterns, and intonation. Data collection was administered through an on-line survey. Participants in this study included twenty female native Mandarin Chinese speakers and 39 female CFL learners. The data collected revealed the correlation between the participants' acquisition of feminine Chinese speech patterns and time spent abroad in a Chinese language environment. Part one of the survey targeted the demographics of the participants. The second part of the …
Portrayal Of Physicists In Fictional Works, Daniel Dotson
Portrayal Of Physicists In Fictional Works, Daniel Dotson
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Portrayal of Physicists in Fictional Works" Daniel Dotson analyzes how physicists (including professors, teachers, physics students, and amateur physicists) are portrayed in novels, films, and television programs. Eighty characters are analyzed to see if they possessed any of ten personality traits: obsessive, having major mental health problems, withdrawn, brave, timid, socially inept, arrogant, too career-focused, out of touch, and stubborn. Dotson lists a summary of the characters with their traits followed by an overview of the traits and select examples of how characters possessed that trait. Male and female characters are compared to determine if one gender …

The Gay Artist As Tragic Hero In The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Henry Alley
The Gay Artist As Tragic Hero In The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Henry Alley
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "The Gay Artist as Tragic Hero in The Picture of Dorian Gray" Henry M. Alley discusses the central artistic figure in Oscar Wilde's novel, Basil Hallward. As the novel's tragic protagonist, he commands the most pity and fear and serves as the most dynamic member of the dramatis personae. Alley contextualizes his discussion within Aristotle's Poetics, contemporary criticism, as well as Wilde's own comments. In addition, Alley looks at Hallward's attempt to hide or censor his gay feelings as parallel to Wilde's struggle with the various versions of the novel. Nevertheless, the characterization of Hallward celebrates the …
Literature, Ideology, And The Imaginary, Marcello Potocco
Literature, Ideology, And The Imaginary, Marcello Potocco
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper "Literature, Ideology and the Imaginary," Marcello Potocco analyses the elusive relation between literature and ideology. The notion of the "social imaginary" -- as developed by Castoriadis -- brings the possibility to reconsider the relation between the literary structure, its reception, and ideology. While ideology is seen as a radical expression of the social imaginary in modern society, it can only manifest itself through the ideological function, which does not necessarily destruct the aesthetic experience. In a literary structure, elements may exist that enable a strong identification with the extra-textual world, but this involves primarily identifications with significations …
About The Political Dimensions Of The Formation Of The King James Bible, Michael G. Rather Jr.
About The Political Dimensions Of The Formation Of The King James Bible, Michael G. Rather Jr.
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Michael G. Rather Jr., examines in his article "About the Political Dimensions of the Formation of the King James Bible" the politics surrounding the formation of one of the most influential text in culture and politics in England and later in English-speaking countries. The translators and King exhibited a duality of beliefs emblematic of Jacobean society. These dualities of hierarchy and commonness, ceremony and purity, clarity and majesty were instituted in England followed by the Australian, US-American, and Canadian cultures. A better understanding of the people who were a part of this translation and the King who commissioned the translation …
Nietzsche's Influence On Bakhtin's Aesthetics Of Grotesque Realism, Yelena Mazour-Matusevich
Nietzsche's Influence On Bakhtin's Aesthetics Of Grotesque Realism, Yelena Mazour-Matusevich
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Nietzsche's Influence on Bakhtin's Aesthetics of Grotesque Realism" Yelena Mazour-Matusevich discusses Bakhtin's concept of grotesque realism in the light of Nietzsche's influence, particularly his notion of chaos and its expression of the Dionysian blended with and perceived through Russian religious thought and mythological consciousness. Mazour-Matusevich postulates that Nietzsche's influence on Bakhtin is most obvious in the latter's seminal work, Rabelais and His World. In order to demonstrate Nietzsche's influence on Bakhtin, Mazour-Matusevich provides an overview of Nietzsche's reception in Russia during Bakhtin's formative years as well as of the current state of research concerning the correlation between …

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Obama, Africa, and the Post-Racial" Michael Janis examines aspects of U.S. president Barack Obama's election in the context of the epistemology and history of racism. Following an introduction to the history of racism in Europe and in the U.S., Janis discusses the media in the U.S. and in Africa in relation to African American and African politics. The debates on race ignited by the campaign are considered in the light of Africana perspectives on relations between Africa and the West and on the history of slavery and colonialism. Based on selected data in the media of the …
Representing Postmodern Marginality In Three Documentary Films, Robert Leblanc
Representing Postmodern Marginality In Three Documentary Films, Robert Leblanc
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Representing Postmodern Marginality in Three Documentary Films" Robert LeBlanc traces the emergence of new epistemologies of documentary film experience within the cases of three recent films that explore the subject's experience of marginality as central to its constitution as subject. These films -- by Marlon Riggs, Chad Friedrichs, and Jessica Yu -- explore the crises of self-representation engaged by their documentary subjects as these subjects seek to define themselves despite -- and yet through -- their experiences of marginal status, while avoiding a reinforcement of that status that could arise through its continued placement into narrative. The …
The Meaning Of Myth In Ulysses And The Magic Mountain, Susan V. Scaff
The Meaning Of Myth In Ulysses And The Magic Mountain, Susan V. Scaff
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "The Meaning of Myth in Ulysses and The Magic Mountain" Susan V. Scaff discusses the proposition that Joyce and Mann combine in their novels myth and history and contradicts Joseph Frank's influential early view that modernist writers avoid history in favor of myth and the more recent verdict of Hayden White that this evasion amounts to an abrogation of civic responsibility mirroring fascism. Mann and Joyce recoil from the horrors of history while exploring the recovery of myth as amelioration. They realize that myths may lose their life bearing quality, and they portray a disoriented Europe lacking …
The Life And Ministry Of John Sung: Sowing Seeds Of Vibrant Christianity In Asian Soil, Ka-Tong Lim
The Life And Ministry Of John Sung: Sowing Seeds Of Vibrant Christianity In Asian Soil, Ka-Tong Lim
ATS Dissertations
John Sung, Ph.D. (1901-1944), was a Chinese scientist turned preacher whose public ministry lasted a mere twelve years. Yet his short life impacted tens of thousands, if not more. At a time when science was king and religion was relegated to the realm of myths, a scientist who preached an old-time religion, performed faith healings, and talked about the second coming of Jesus, must be quite "crazy," or hard to understand.
This dissertation is a biographical research seeking to discern contributing factors that made John Sung a central figure of twentieth-century Christianity. It explains the importance of Sung and his …

Interpersonal Metadiscourse Categories In Two Egyptian Newspapers Concerning The 2007 "Constitutional Amendments", Ahmad Abdelmoneim
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This research-work aims at studying the use of metadiscourse markers by foreign learners of Arabic to enhance their writing skills. First there is an introduction which explains the role of metadiscourse markers in writing within the framework of the two paradigms of meaning suggested by Halliday, i.e. the textual and the interspersonal. Second two hypotheses on which the research-work is built are spelled out. The first hypothesis assumes that writers will always use the two basic paradigms of meaning suggested by Haliday as far as metadiscourse markers are concerned. The Second one postulates that foreign learners of Arabic acquire solid …

Tax Competition In The Film Industry, Chelsea Villareal
Anthós
Being one of the largest industries in the world, the film industry remains an economic powerhouse in our society. It’s for this reason that film’s messages are not the only political aspects of their creation. Senators and representatives across the country are increasingly seeing the film industry as key towards economic development. With incentive packages being placed around the country, the politics over the film industry have become an overwhelming power game. Politicians are being threatened with recalls and impeachment to keep their economies afloat during harsh economic times. Without raising taxes, representatives have hit a wall. Increasing debt and …

Congress And The Era, Emily Yoder

The Equal Rights Amendment was a constitutional amendment that guaranteed that the "equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." In this paper I will analyze the policy process in the critical years from the ERA's discharge from committee in 1970 to its passage through Congress in 1972 through both primary documents and scholarly opinion. By thoroughly examining the controversy over the ERA through the views and strategies of those advocating and opposing it, I will show how the momentum for social change characterized …
Music And Language: Exploring An Artificial Music Grammar, Erica R. Knowles
Music And Language: Exploring An Artificial Music Grammar, Erica R. Knowles
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Research regarding the brain mechanisms that underlie music and language processing supports two main interpretations: domain-specificity and domain-generality. Evidence from neuropsychology literature, specifically from amusia research, supports domain-specific mechanisms (Peretz & Coltheart, 2003) but recent neuroimaging and behavioral evidence supports overlapping mechanisms, especially for syntax processing (Patel, 2008). The present study used an artificial music grammar in order to test participants' ability to learn a new music grammar as well as to observe a possible interaction between music and language syntax processing. Although participants were able to learn the artificial music grammar, a language task was not affected by errors …
The Sick Man’S Last Fight: The Role Of The Ottoman Empire In The First World War, Henry A. Crouse
The Sick Man’S Last Fight: The Role Of The Ottoman Empire In The First World War, Henry A. Crouse
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
The Great War in 1914 to 1918 destroyed mighty empires, and created nations from their ashes. Both the Allied and Central Powers had been dominated by powerful empires. The Ottoman Empire, established by the Turks was at one point the largest empire in the world. Prior to World War I, it had fallen into decline as its territories were gobbled up by other powers. The world dismissed the Ottoman Empire as “the Sick Man of Europe.” Throughout the Nineteenth Century, the rest of Europe waited for the empire to implode. A few years before war broke out, the Turks had …

Phenomenally Happy: An Examination Of The Ways Heidegger Can Critique And Support Positive Psychology, Samantha Crow
Phenomenally Happy: An Examination Of The Ways Heidegger Can Critique And Support Positive Psychology, Samantha Crow
Theses
This thesis argues that Positive Psychology, one of the newest branches of Psychology, conforms to sets of ideas about the human person which have been accepted from within the Western philosophical and scientific traditions, and that these ideas obstruct its dual ambitions to provide a balance to the weakness model in Psychology and to enhance human flourishing, since these require a comprehensive account of the human person. Heidegger’s work is nominated as a likely source of remedy, for three key reasons: Both systems of thought share superficial similarities which provide the basis for the clarification and development of key ideas …

The Handschin Foundation is 100 years old. Thanks to this Foundation many young people from the Canton Basel-Landschaft have been receiving scholarships which have made it easier, or even possible, for them to get an education. The founder, the industrialist Heinrich Handschin from Rickenbach, regretted his own lack of formal education throughout his life. Therefore he provided in his last will that "poor, gifted young people from the Canton" were to be helped to complete an education appropriate to their abilities.

Heinrich Handschin: Childhood Places
Heinrich Handschin: Childhood Places
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Heinrich Handschin was born on February 1, 1830, in Rickenbach in the Canton of Basel-Landschaft as the son of Anna Maria Obrist and Johannes Handschin. He was the youngest of four children and grew up in the 'Butcher House' named for the butcher line of the Handschin family from Rickenbach which has many wide-spread branches. Yet for a long time there had been no more butchers in the family, instead there were lacemakers, weavers of silk ribbons, small farmers, day-laborers and farmhands. In the 19th century other family members undertook the difficult journey to America in the hope to find …

Heinrich Handschin: Things Are Looking Up
Heinrich Handschin: Things Are Looking Up
Swiss American Historical Society Review
A real change did not come until Handschin turned his back on the silk ribbons and in 1863 began to produce ribbons for fire hoses. This cheap ribbon made of the raw material flax finally brought him the long expected commercial upswing. Drabbet (coarse linen) unlike silk or cotton could be bought inexpensively since it was produced in Russia and thus was not subject to tariffs. Low wages and long work hours which guaranteed the best possible use of the machines also contributed to making Moscow an extremely attractive industrial place for Heinrich Handschin.
