Conversion To Islam In Colorado, Patrick D. Bowen

In the scholarship concerning conversion to Islam in the West, few books or articles have been written that examine non-African American US converts. Furthermore, this literature generally neglects using models of conversion for analyzing US Muslims. This thesis is an attempt to begin such a project. For this thesis, I interviewed 13 converts to Islam over the course of a month and a half at a local mosque: 8 females and 5 males; 9 white, 3 Latina/o, and 1 non-African American black. Reo Fortune’s legacy to anthropology has been overshadowed by his relation- ships with friends and colleagues, many of whom came to see him as difficult. Professional differences and personality clashes pervaded his career. Despite this, he was once regarded as the foremost anthropologist of his era. Fortune’s contribution to anthropology is reflected in his major publications and journal articles that illustrate the diversity and complexity of his fieldwork.

Australian Aboriginal Ethnometeorology And Seasonal Calendars, Philip A. Clarke

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

This paper uses a cultural anthropological approach to investigate an indigenous Australian perspective on atmospheric phenomena and seasons, using data gained from historical records and ethnographic fieldwork. Aboriginal people believe that the forces driving the weather are derived from Creation Ancestors and spirits, asserting that short term changes are produced through ritual. By recognizing signals such as wind direction, rainfall, temperature change, celestial movements, animal behaviour and the flowering of plants, Aboriginal people are able to divide the year into seasons. Indigenous calendars vary widely across Australia and reflect annual changes within Aboriginal lifestyles.

Barely back in Basel Handschin met Bernhard Lerch (1811-1904), a ribbon manufacturer and Swiss entrepreneur from Moscow, who was looking for a weaving master for his firm. This meeting was to become a fateful tum in Handschin' s development. Bernhard Lerch offered the young and well-qualified Handschin a position, he accepted and in 1856 traveled to Moscow where he was to spend the next 25 years.

In the first years Heinrich Handschin lived extremely modestly, spent as little as possible and seemed to work untiringly. Because he lived so frugally, he was able to save several hundred rubles, approximately sfr. 2,300.00, which he then invested in his own enterprise. When Lerch Inc. moved into a new factory on the outskirts of Moscow in 1859, he sold a part of his old building to his manager Handschin. Thus, after Morf and Lerch the property changed into the hands of the third Swiss entrepreneur and was still used for the production of textiles.

The Basel assets of Heinrich Handschin were speedily liquidated. Jakob Wirz renounced the right to buy the house at the Schtitzenmattstrasse, and the Handschin household was liquidated at an auction and the property was sold for the Foundation. Only the disbursing of the legacies of sfr. 25,000.00 to relatives who had not been mentioned in the will took until 1895 because these people also had to prove that they were indeed relatives.

Direction Of The Musical: Working, Kimberly A. Peaker-Lozano

Master of Theater Production Graduate Projects

This project entailed the selection, background research and documentation, musical analysis, casting, direction, vocal coaching, and post-production analysis of Centennial High School's production of Working. Documentation includes research and analysis of the play, its music, and an evaluation of the musical as a production vehicle for the department of theatre arts at Centennial High School. The analysis also includes a discussion as to the non-traditional directorial vision of this production.
