Relational Maintenance Strategies On Facebook, Erin M. Bryant, Jennifer Marmo

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research

This study explored how college students utilize the social networking site Facebook to maintain relationships. Focus group data was analyzed to develop a list of 58 Facebook relational maintenance strategies. Canary, Stafford, Hause, and Wallace’s (1993) relational maintenance typology was used to organize Facebook relational maintenance strategies. A new category was created to represent a popular relational maintenance strategy on Facebook: surveillance. This study also examined how maintenance strategies vary in different Facebook relationships; close friends, casual friends, acquaintances, romantic partners, and outsiders (e.g. parents, bosses, teachers). Hopedale, A Moderate Utopia: Distinguishing Practical Christianity From Radical Idealism, Noah Symynkywicz

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

Historians often define the utopian communities of the nineteenth century as those that tried to alienate themselves from their contemporaries in thought. However, a spectrum of these communities developed with a more ordinary worldview. Specifically, a community called Hopedale tried to balance elements of mainstream New England society with those of its “Christian socialist” leader, Adin Ballou. By looking at the community’s day-to-day life, this equilibrium becomes clear.

The Diagram Of The Supreme Pole And The Kabbalistic Tree: On The Similarity Of Two Symbolic Structures, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper discusses similarities of both form and meaning between two symbolic structures: the Diagram of the Supreme Pole of Song Neo-Confucianism and the Kabbalistic Tree of medieval Jewish mysticism. These similarities are remarkable in the light of the many differences that exist between Chinese and Judaic thought, which also manifest in the two symbols. Intercultural influence might account for the similarities, but there is no historical evidence for such influence. An alternative explanation would attribute the similarities to the ubiquitousness of religious-philosophical ideas about hierarchy, polarity, and macrocosm-microcosm parallelism, but this does not adequately account for the similar overall …

Identity Anxiety And The Power And Problem Of Naming In African American And Jewish American Literature, Rachael Peckham

This article examines the fraught power of names and (re)naming in African-American and Jewish-authored literature in 20^th-century America. The article applies various concepts within critical race theory, such as critic Stuart Hall's theories on cultural identity, to The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Ralph Ellison's personal essay "Hidden Name and Complex Fate," and Bernard Malamud's short story "The Lady of the Lake." In each of these texts, African-American and Jewish characters' names serve as loaded markers for the shifting planes of identity in tension with a culture and history of oppression.

(First Paragraph) Was fall 1940 truly Britain's "finest hour," as Winston Churchill memorably suggested? More particularly, are time-honored stories of stiff-lipped Londoners refusing to buckle under the onslaught of the Luftwaffe on the first day of the Blitz (September 7, 1940) myth or reality? These are the questions Peter Stansky addresses in this well-written, occasionally almost sentimental, essay. He concludes ultimately that the popular version of Blitz history substantially reflects reality, but nevertheless contains many elements of heroic, comforting, and somewhat off-target mythology.

Preparing Tomorrow’S World Language Teacher Today: The Case For Seamless Induction, Paul A. Garcia, Todd A. Hernandez, Patricia Davis-Wiley

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This essay is a call to action. It offers a comprehensive overview of the challenges facing world language (WL) teacher educators and their employers, the K-12 schools, during the teacher induction period. We propose a new paradigm for WL teacher education based on national accreditation standards, best-practice pedagogy, insights from the professional literature on methods education, and the enhanced role of the methods instructor/supervisor. In order to become successful in the classroom, the pre-service educator undergoes a seamless period of induction that is student-centered and college/university-supported beyond the classroom arena.

Along with Antonín Dvořák, Bohuslav Martinů is the most revered composer in his native land, now known as the Czech Republic. Little wonder, therefore, that a competition bearing the composer’s name draws the best choirs in the country, as well as from abroad, to the town of Pardubice for the International Bohuslav Martinů Festival and Choir Competition.
