Desultory Remarks On Chinese Politics, W H. Mclaughlin Aug 1930

Desultory Remarks On Chinese Politics, W H. Mclaughlin

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Republic of China has not, as may often be supposed from its name, a republican form of government, with taxation and representation carefully apportioned, popular suffrage, general elections of president, legislators, etc., and other features which we associate with our republican form of government. The nation is at present living in the so-called "period of political tutelage," during which, in accordance with the will of the founder, Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the government shall be entirely in the hands of the National People’s Party, or Kuomintang. During this period there is to be no popular government, but the people, …

Thee Pastor At The Bedside Of The Unbeliever, F C. Streufert Aug 1930

Thee Pastor At The Bedside Of The Unbeliever, F C. Streufert

Concordia Theological Monthly

If we are called to the bedside of a patient who has no knowledge of the Word of God, to the bedside of the unbeliever, this is done in most instances not at the request of the patient, but upon the suggestion of one of the family or a friend. It cannot be otherwise. How can any one have a desire to hear concerning Christ of whom he knows nothing and in whom he does not believe. It is a sad fact that many, though they are at death's door, in spite of all are filled with hatred against the …

The Dynamic Of The Lutheran Reformation, R R. Caemmerer Aug 1930

The Dynamic Of The Lutheran Reformation, R R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Augsburg Confession is a confession of faith. But through its four hundred years it has become more: it is a witness to the persistence of the Lutheran Reformation. It was in its origin an episode in the growth of the Lutheran movement; it is a testimonial, after four centuries, to the permanent power of its principles. Why did the principles formulated under the inspiration of the Lutheran movement have this quality of persistence, becoming largely identified with the name and personality of Luther, maintaining their distinction through centuries and under varying circumstances? Why did not, for example, the Wycliffe …

How Peter Became Pope, W Dallmann Aug 1930

How Peter Became Pope, W Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Hilary, 461-408, took the title "Vicar of Peter, to whom, since the resurrection of Christ, belonged the keys of the kingdom.” He admitted, however, that his vast authority had a civil origin. In time the "Vicar of Peter'' grew into the ''Vicar of Christ."

Simplicius, 468---483, appointed a permanent legate in Spain.

When Emperor Augustulus was deposed, in 476, the division of the Eastern and Western empires ended. In the following century the Goths were put down by J' Justinian’s generals Belisarius and Narses, and Italy was subject to the emperor at Constantinople and ruled by his exarchs at Ravenna, …

The Place Of Catechetical Instruction In Catholic Education, Anne H. Graham Jul 1930

The Place Of Catechetical Instruction In Catholic Education, Anne H. Graham

Bachelors’ Theses

Catechetical instruction in the Church dates from St. Paul, and is mentioned in his Epistles. Requirements for admission into the primitive Church were exacting and thorough. The writings of the Fathers, the ancient liturgies, and the decrees of the first Councils tell us that before their Baptism, the catechumens were obliged to learn by heart the Our Father and the Apostles' Cree, and had to be instructed in these formulas. In addition, special instruction was also given them regarding the Commandments and the Sacraments they were about to receive - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist.

The Spirit Of The Lutheran Chorale, P E. Kretzmann Jul 1930

The Spirit Of The Lutheran Chorale, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is sometimes hard for a Lutheran to keep the boastful note out of his voice when he speaks of the various treasures of our Lutheran heritage. We have, by the blessing of God, the finest text-book of doctrinal instruction, the Small Catechism of Martin Luther; we have, in addition to the Ecumenical Creeds, the clearest exposition of Scripture truth in our book of confessions, the Concordia of 1580, in which the Augsburg Confession of 1530, whose four-hundredth anniversary we are celebrating this year, deservedly occupies a position of honor; and we have a heritage of church art in general …

The Christology Of The Apocalypse, W H. Ellwanger Jul 1930

The Christology Of The Apocalypse, W H. Ellwanger

Concordia Theological Monthly

More curious notions arise in the minds of many Bible students regarding St. John's Apocalypse than regarding any other book of the Bible. Usually Bible classes are found to be more eager to study this book than any other portion of the Holy Scriptures, and pastors are often asked bewildering and perplexing questions concerning it. Shall we hold ourselves aloof from this writing with an air of "touch not, taste not, handle not," or shall we diligently apply ourselves to laying hold of the divine truths here recorded in their richness and fulness?

Sermon For The Golden Jubilee Of A Congregation, W G. Polack

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is with heartfelt rejoicing and fervent thanksgiving that you are met together in your house of worship on this occasion. After weeks and months of careful planning and prayerful preparation the day of your golden jubilee has come. You have united your hearts and voices in songs of praise, echoing the exultation of the psalmist: "Bless the Lord, 0 my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, 0 my soul, and forget not all His benefits." “The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous. … This is …

How Peter Become Pope, W Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

"The Papacy, such as the West knew it in a later age, had not yet 'been born" - in the fourth century, says Duchesne. For stating this historical truth the French Catholic scholar’s History of the Chruch was placed on the "Index.''

Julius I, 337-352, called a synod to Rome in 340, but the Orientals sent an insulting refusal. When he, in 341, reproved some Eastern bishops for calling a synod at Antioch without his permission, they laughed and told him Christianity arose in the East, and if there were any question of superiority, such belonged to the elder, Oriental, …
