The Place Of Catechetical Instruction In Catholic Education, Anne H. Graham
The Place Of Catechetical Instruction In Catholic Education, Anne H. Graham
Bachelors’ Theses
Catechetical instruction in the Church dates from St. Paul, and is mentioned in his Epistles. Requirements for admission into the primitive Church were exacting and thorough. The writings of the Fathers, the ancient liturgies, and the decrees of the first Councils tell us that before their Baptism, the catechumens were obliged to learn by heart the Our Father and the Apostles’ Creed, and had to be instructed in these formulas. In addition, special instruction was also given them regarding the Commandments and the Sacraments they were about to receive - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist.

How Peter Became Pope, W Dalhmann
How Peter Became Pope, W Dalhmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
Waiving discussion, let us assume that Peter came to Rome shortly before· his death.
This humble "elder" begs his fellow-elders to feed the flock of God and not to be "lords over God's heritage, but examples to the flock." 1 Pet. 5, 1-3. How· did this humble elder grow into the infallible Pope who holds the place of God on earth?
Rome was the capital of the world, and the bishop naturally shared in the glory that was Rome’s.
All roads lead to Rome, and Christiana from all parts of the world came to Rome and become acquainted with the …

Pentecost, 1930 A. D., which reminds us that the nineteen hundredth anniversary of the great day described Acts 2 is upon us. And the Lord, who sent His Holy Spirit in accordance with His promise, has not yet returned. "from thence" in His glory, as He has also promised. Faithful is He that promised, and He it is who calls to us even now: "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches."
The Place And The Time Of The Captivity Letters, P E. Kretzmann
The Place And The Time Of The Captivity Letters, P E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
Four letters ascribed to the Apostle Paul have from ancient times been called the Captivity Letters, namely, those to the Colossians, to Philemon, to the Ephesians, and to the Philippians, and the traditional view is that they were written during Paul's first captivity in Rome, from 61 to 63 A. D. But some recent scholars in the field of New Testament isagogics are inclined-to reject the traditional view, preferring to assume that either Caesarea, between 58 and 60, is to be accepted or Ephesus, between 54 and 57. The proponents of Caesarea have some difficulty in adjusting historical data, however, …

John Wyclif And His Doctrine Of The Church, Albert E. Meyer
John Wyclif And His Doctrine Of The Church, Albert E. Meyer
Bachelor of Divinity
Among these precursors of Luther John Wiclif is preeminent. In point of time he is anterior to Huss of Prague, 1369-1415, of whom Luther learned many things. These two, Wiclif and Huss, no doubt are the two reformers whose influence on Luther is beyond calculation. And since Wiclif preceded even Huss, we may easily recognize the position of influence which the former occupied in relation to the Great Reformation.
The Effects Of Newman's Mediterranean Voyage On His Conversion, Herbert E. Hengsbach
The Effects Of Newman's Mediterranean Voyage On His Conversion, Herbert E. Hengsbach
Bachelors’ Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to give a detailed account of the travels of John Henry Newman in eighteen hundred and thirty-two, stressing and discussing the events which influenced Newman most in his conversion to the Catholic faith. This thesis aims at more than a mere tabulation of events; it is to be a cross-section of Newman's life during the period of a year. This discussion, also, will attempt to disprove the Protestant theory stating that Newman was converted: because he was of a Catholic temperament and that religion is merely a matter of temperament. During this eventful voyage, …
The Christology Of St. Paul's Captivity Letters, Luther V. Stephan
The Christology Of St. Paul's Captivity Letters, Luther V. Stephan
Bachelor of Divinity
I purpose, therefore, to write on the Christology of Paul's captivity letters. My general plan of procedure shall be to tabulate in categorical fashion the sum of the christological doctrines taught by Paul in these same letters, with appended remarks for the purpose of clarification. Uppermost in my mind shall be the expounding of the truth as it is so powerfully adduced in these inspired epistles. I shall determine to defeat and expose the heretical doctrines after careful collation of the source material, The scope of my treatment shall begin with the pre-existent Christ in heaven, take special notice of …
The Doctrine Of The Resurrection According To The New Testament, Gustav Gehlhar
The Doctrine Of The Resurrection According To The New Testament, Gustav Gehlhar
Bachelor of Divinity
The doctrine of the resurrection of the body is a teaching peculiar to the Christian religion. We need only to investigate the world's religious history in order to be convinced that all other religions know nothing about such a resurrection.

Der Biblische Begriff Gottesfurcht, Martin T. Steege
Der Biblische Begriff Gottesfurcht, Martin T. Steege
Bachelor of Divinity
The biblical concept of the fear of God is impossible to describe in this treatise. Because there are about two hundred places where the Scriptures speak of the fear of God. We must focus on some of the most important passages. Our task is to interpret important proverbs in order to derive the basic idea of the fear of God. First of all, therefore, it must be determined what this term means and contains and then, as it is in the Christian Ethics comes to the fore. The first part is dogmatic, the second ethical. Therefore, our disposition also breaks …

The Old Religion In England During The Early Years Of The Reign Of Queen Elizabeth, Carl S. Meyer
The Old Religion In England During The Early Years Of The Reign Of Queen Elizabeth, Carl S. Meyer
Bachelor of Divinity
To comprehend the topic we must, first of all, understand the scope of the term "Old Religion." Nothing else can be meant by that designation than that system of religion which had pervaded the countries of Europe and had been the marrow of its religious life ~ during the period preceeding the memorial sixteenth century. Under this term we would include both its national and its international aspects. We will investigate this ecclesiastical system in England during the process of its overthrow -- after it had temporarily regained what was thought to be its dominant position. This overthrow we would …
The New England Theology, Theodore Wuggazer Jr
The New England Theology, Theodore Wuggazer Jr
Bachelor of Divinity
In order to discuss intelligently the peculiar form which the Calvinistic Theology assumed in America, and to which it later developed, it obviously becomes necessary to set up a standard by which the American form of Calvinism is to be judged. It is the object of this paper to show, after a fashion, to what extent the theologians of New England of the 17th and 18th centuries deviated from Old Calvinism. For this purpose we must dwell briefly on the work of the Reformer, John Calvin, and on the chief tenets of the Calvinistic or Reformed Theology. In respect to …
