Sermon Study On Acts 16, 16-32, O W. Wismar Oct 1930

Every preacher is under a debt of lasting gratitude to the patient plodders who have selected the various series of pericopes. The expository preacher especially is happy and contented in mind when he has a preselected portion of Holy Writ before him to be treated homiletically; for he is convinced that " the text, the text, is the thing wherein he'll find the message of his King." With this conviction, mingled perhaps with a slight misgiving that the present text is somewhat long, we begin our labor in the Word by reading the seventeen verses in the Authorized Version.

The Pastor At The Bedside Of The Backslider, F C. Streufert

Concordia Theological Monthly

How difficult it is to perform our duty at the bedsides of such as have turned away from their Savior! It is often difficult to approach them, even if no personal matter between patient and pastor has caused the former to forsake God and His Word. Permit me to present three cases from my own pastoral experience together with my treatment of them.

The Superman, C W. Faye Oct 1930

The Superman, C W. Faye

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is a revision, amplification, and bringing up to date of an oration delivered and published a number of years ago. I should like to add that I have sometimes felt in preparing this paper that what Bergson, for instance, has been driving at has eluded me. I have tried to present fairly and justly the doctrines of the thinkers mentioned in this paper. Even If I have failed to discover what they wished to teach, I feel pretty confident of having found out what the bulk of their followers think they teach. For practical purposes that is sufficient; for …

Schools Of The Prophets In Old Testament Times, A W. Meyer Oct 1930

Schools Of The Prophets In Old Testament Times, A W. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Let us note that the character of the prophetic office differed distinctly from that of the priestly, though at times combined in one person. It was not, like the priestly, confined to one tribe; however, it did not, in its personnel, extend beyond the covenant people. Balaam might be designated an exception, but he was an enigma as to character. A prophet was not to establish his prophetic office by signs and wonders, for even false prophets might perform these, Deut.13, 1-15, but by his adherence to the Law and testimony of Jehovah.

Does The Bible Teach That Only Christians Of The Apostolic Age Would Possess Miraculous Powers?, W Arndt Oct 1930

Does The Bible Teach That Only Christians Of The Apostolic Age Would Possess Miraculous Powers?, W Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

The question is frequently asked, Are there Scripture-passages by means of which we can prove that the extraordinary gifts possessed by Christians in apostolic times, like those of healing, prophesying, etc., were intended for, and given to, the Church of early New Testament times only? The reply has to be, There are no such Scripture-passages. Our Lord at various times conferred upon His disciples the power to do miraculous works. The beat-known occasion is one of the meetings which He held with His disciples prior to His ascension. According to Mark He said at that time: "And these signs shall …

"Professing Themselves To Be Wise, They Became Fools." Rom. 1, 22, George Luecke

Concordia Theological Monthly

The writer has been very forcefully reminded of this word of St. Paul by two articles which have recently appeared in two prominent and widely read journals, one in the Atlantic Monthly for January, the other in the Literary Digest of January 25. The former of the two articles is entitled "The Antireligious Front,” by William L Sullivan, and its purpose is to ridicule the antireligious vagaries of ungodly men who are "wise in their own conceit.” Two sections of this article particularly appeal to me, and will, I think, appeal to others, as masterly presentations of the folly of …

How Peter Became Pope, W Dallmann Sep 1930

How Peter Became Pope, W Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Hadrian I, 772-795, had his rival Paul Afiarta executed. When the Lombards again besieged Rome, the Pope called Karl the Great, who overthrew King Desiderius and annexed his kingdom. Karl visited the Pope, kissed the stairs of St. Peter's as he went up, and ratified and enlarged the gift of his father Pepin in 774. In 781 Karl had to help again, and rumor had it he planned to depose the Pope.

Till December 1, 781, the Pope had counted his office from the years of the rule of the Greek emperors; now he dated it from the years of …
