Luther's Doctrine Of The Two Kingdoms In The Context Of His Theology, Heinrich Bornkamm
Luther's Doctrine Of The Two Kingdoms In The Context Of His Theology, Heinrich Bornkamm
Ebooks
In this essay, the distinguished church historian of Heidelberg University gives us a guided tour through one of the most complex and controversial problems in the interpretation of Christian ethics. Luther’s “two kingdoms” doctrine has been variously praised and damned in recent theology. Thinkers such as Nygren, Althaus, and Ebeling have defended the doctrine as the source of a salutary political realism (since it reminds us that no social order as such will ever be identical with the kingdom of Christ), combined with a definite sense of Christian social responsibility (since the “kingdom on the left” is also God’s kingdom, …

Human Subjects Protection In Research: Are We Doing Enough?, Marsha L. Green
Human Subjects Protection In Research: Are We Doing Enough?, Marsha L. Green
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Scientific research has produced substantial social benefits but has also posed troubling ethical questions with regard to the use and protection of human subjects. These questions have continued to be in the forefront of all biomedical and social research. The increased education of researchers on the subject of protection of human subjects has become of vital importance in the research world. This education involves program administrators, faculty, staff, students, research participants, and Institutional Review Board Committee (IRB) members. In this study of the University of Nevada, LasVegas (UNLV) human subjects’ protection program administration, the question to be answered was: has …
Music Of The Invisible: Messiaen’S "Saint Francis", Paul G. Crowley
Music Of The Invisible: Messiaen’S "Saint Francis", Paul G. Crowley
Religious Studies
Saint Francois d'Assise, Olivier Messiaen's only operatic work, received its world premiere in Paris in 1983. It has rarely been performed since, partly because of the sheer scope and audacity of the project, but also because of its subject matter--faith itself. This fall, the San Francisco Opera, newly directed by Pamela Rosenberg, gave the opera its U.S. premiere in its namesake city. It was a brilliant gamble, possibly opening a new operatic door in America. This is an opera unlike any other--an unabashed paean to music, to nature, and to the mystical path to joy seen in the figure of …

Inner Sharing: Spiritual Direction And Pastoral Care, Richard E. Lamontagne
Inner Sharing: Spiritual Direction And Pastoral Care, Richard E. Lamontagne
Doctor of Ministry
Spiritual direction is a way of assisting people in their growth toward spiritual maturity. Yet, spiritual direction remains a relatively unknown and undervalued link to the life of the spirit despite people's need for guidance. Often, ministers who are normally expected to offer spiritual direction are reluctant to engage in it. This dissertation proposes to reassure clergy and encourage them to risk engagement in spiritual direction. The first section seeks to clarify spiritual direction by providing definitions and distinguishing it from similar disciplines. The second section situates spiritual direction in the history, tradition, and present conversation of the Church. The …

An Analysis Of The Concept Of Believing In The Narrative Contexts Of John's Gospel, David A. Croteau
An Analysis Of The Concept Of Believing In The Narrative Contexts Of John's Gospel, David A. Croteau
SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations
The thesis explores the meaning of the concept of believing in the Gospel of John. Chapter 1 provides a discussion of the relevance of the subject and the methodology employed in the research. The methodology is primarily a semantic field approach emphasizing the importance context adds to the interpretation process. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 follow the same basic outline. The goal is to provide an analysis of [Special characters omitted.] within its syntactical relationships and verbal forms. Any relevant conclusions are then integrated into an exegetical discussion. The Gospel of John is divided into three sections, one for each …
