Barnett Newman's “Sense Of Space”: A Noncontextualist Account Of Its Perception And Meaning, Michael Schreyach

Michael Schreyach

Barnett Newman professed that a beholder's encounter with his paintings was like meeting another person for the first time. He believed the experience produced the conditions for apprehending an ethical relationship that would entail both the individual's achievement of his or her own understanding of “self” and his or her acknowledgment of another individual. But it would be their mutual recognition of separateness as the condition of possibility for communication — for sharing worlds — that would ground the ethical relationship between them. Not just interested in matters of theory, the artist was also specific about the modes of spatial …

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway Jun 2018

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway

Steven W Holloway

The successful “invasion” of ancient Mesopotamia by explorers in the pay of the British Museum Trustees resulted in best-selling publications, a treasure-trove of Assyrian antiquities for display purposes and scholarly excavation, and a remarkable boost to the quest for confirmation of the literal truth of the Bible. The public registered its delight with the findings through the turnstyle- twirling appeal of the British Museum exhibits, and a series of appropriations of Assyrian art motifs and narratives in popular culture - jewelry, bookends, clocks, fine arts, theater productions, and a walk-through Assyrian palace among other period mansions at the Sydenham Crystal …

Assur Is King Of Persia: Illustrations Of The Book Of Esther In Some Nineteenth-Century Sources, Steven W. Holloway

Steven W Holloway

The marriage of archaeological referencing and picture Bibles in the nineteenth century resulted in an astonishing variety of guises worn by the court of Ahasuerus in Esther. Following the exhibition of Neo-Assyrian sculpture in the British Museum and the wide circulation of such images in various John Murray publications, British illustrators like Henry Anelay defaulted to Assyrian models for kings and rulers in the Old Testament, including the principal actors in Esther, even though authentic Achaemenid Persian art had been available for illustrative pastiche for decades. This curious adoptive choice echoed British national pride in its splendid British Museum collection …

The Seven Works of Mercy by the artist, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, is the result of intellectual and social relationships related to the informational exchange surrounding the developments of early modern science. Status quo dictates that the Colonna family were Caravaggio’s primary protectors during his years in exile. However, new evidence supports a more complex history which includes a network of aristocratic intellectuals in Rome and Naples who were associated with the epistemic changes in early modern science and who also contributed to Caravaggio’s success in exile. Despite Caravaggio’s exposure to emerging scientific theories through these networks, his art …

The Parallel Of Briseis And The Classical Athenian Women, Savannah Redfern Nov 2017

The Parallel Of Briseis And The Classical Athenian Women, Savannah Redfern

Savannah Redfern

In the Iliad, women make few appearances; however, they are crucial to the plot. They function as vehicles of meaning adding commentary to the activities of the men. This is particularly apparent with Briseis, who primarily functions as the token for Achilles’s initial estrangement and subsequent assimilation into the Greek army. From the beginning, as she was taken captive by Achilles, to the ending as she mourns the death of Patroclus, Briseis’s life was full of injustices, and her feelings to these adversities were forced to be suppressed due to the passive role she must portray as a woman. This forced …

A Period Examination Through Contemporary Energy Analysis Of Kevin Roche’S Fine Arts Center At University Of Massachusetts-Amherst, L Carl Fiocchi Jr

L. Carl Fiocchi

Studies of buildings belonging to a subset of Modernist architecture, Brutalism, have included discussions pertaining to social and architectural history, critical reception, tectonic form and geometry inspirations, material property selections, period technology limitations, and migration of public perceptions. Evaluations of Brutalist buildings’ energy related performances have been restricted to anecdotal observations with particular focus on the building type’s poor thermal performance, a result of the preferred construction method, i.e. monolithic reinforced concrete used as structure, interior finish and exterior finish. A valid criticism, but one that served to dismiss discussion that the possibility of other positive design strategies limiting energy …

Image, Epigram, And Nature In Middle Byzantine Personal Devotion, Brad Hostetler Apr 2017

Image, Epigram, And Nature In Middle Byzantine Personal Devotion, Brad Hostetler

Brad Hostetler

In Nectar and Illusion, Henry Maguire examines Byzantium's ambiguous relationship with nature in both art and literature. He demonstrates that after Iconoclasm, visual representations of the terrestrial world displayed in public settings were in "a constant tension between acceptance and denial," but "tended to flourish most abundantly in relatively inconspicuous locations," such as on small private objects. I build upon Maguire's work by examining the ways in which nature was invoked, represented, and utilized through epigrams, images, and materials in personal devotional contexts in the Middle Byzantine period.

Arnold Dolmetsch's "Green Harpsichord" And The Musical Arts And Crafts, Edmond Johnson Dec 2016

Arnold Dolmetsch's "Green Harpsichord" And The Musical Arts And Crafts, Edmond Johnson

Edmond Johnson

This study uses Arnold Dolmetsch’s “Green Harpsichord” as a starting point for a larger discussion of the relationship between Arnold Dolmetsch, William Morris, and other members of the Arts and Crafts movement who were active in London in the 1890s. Built in 1896 and displayed that same year by the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, the Green Harpsichord was the harpsichord built in England in nearly a century, and its design and decoration reflect its position as an object that had to negotiate the aesthetics of the past and the practical needs of the present. The article concludes by looking …

Architecture That Bows.Pdf, Andreas Luescher Dec 2015

Architecture That Bows.Pdf, Andreas Luescher

Andreas Luescher

This paper examines the museum dedicated to Pierre Soulages and its relationship with Soulages, the city of Rodez, the Forirail Garden (which is the site of the museum), and the ideas and practices realized by Catalan architects Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta (RCR). The Musée Soulages is defined by the color black and the luminous fluidity of steel as designed by RCR Arquitectes; it is also aligned with an environmentalecology that literally and figuratively represents the town of Rodez with its Notre-Dame Cathedral. The central thesis is that the Musée Soulages inducts the visitor into a …

Stained Glass Windows Of Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio, Produced By Wilbur H. Burnham Studios, Michael Tevesz Dec 2015

Stained Glass Windows Of Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio, Produced By Wilbur H. Burnham Studios, Michael Tevesz

Michael J. Tevesz

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral has over forty large stained glass windows that range in age from the 15 to the 20th Century. The medieval windows were produced in England and Germany, while the more contemporary windows were produced by such prominent studios as those directed by Willet, Connick, Tiffany, Heaton, Young, and Burnham. The more contemporary windows are of considerable artistic and historical interest, but there is very little information available about them. This monograph specifically focuses on the windows of Trinity Cathedral produced by the Wilbur H. Burnham Studios. The Burnham Studios windows are the most accessible windows within the …

Review Of Herbert Blau’S Reality Principles: From The Absurd To The Virtual, Clark Lunberry Nov 2015

Review Of Herbert Blau’S Reality Principles: From The Absurd To The Virtual, Clark Lunberry

Clark Lunberry

In his most recent book of collected essays on theatre and performance, the esteemed scholar and theatre director Herbert Blau (who died on 3 May 2013 at age 87) recounts a story from his early days as a director of an actor’s lament with his rehearsed role, “I don’t feel this, I’m not feeling this at all.” To which Blau forcefully replied, “I couldn’t care less what you feel, or don’t, feelings are cheap! I only care what you think. What we’re doing here is thinking, trying to understand”. In a chapter entitled “The Emotional Memory of Directing,” Blau is …
