In Vivo Printing Of Growth Factor-Eluting Adhesive Scaffolds Improves Wound Healing, Kristo Nuutila, Mohamadmahdi Samandari, Yori Endo, Yuteng Zhang, Jacob Quint, Tannin A. Schmidt, Ali Tamayol, Indranil Sinha

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Acute and chronic wounds affect millions of people around the world, imposing a growing financial burden on patients and hospitals. Despite the application of current wound management strategies, the physiological healing process is disrupted in many cases, resulting in impaired wound healing. Therefore, more efficient and easy-to-use treatment modalities are needed. In this study, we demonstrate the benefit of in vivo printed, growth factor-eluting adhesive scaffolds for the treatment of full-thickness wounds in a porcine model. A custom-made handheld printer is implemented to finely print gelatin-methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel containing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) into the wounds. In vitro and …

Optimization Of 3d Printed Mold Performance For Injection Molding Via Hollow Infill Patterns, Alan Fong 2021 Portland State University

Optimization Of 3d Printed Mold Performance For Injection Molding Via Hollow Infill Patterns, Alan Fong

University Honors Theses

The applicability of hollow infill patterns has been explored for its applications in making 3D printed polymer-based injection molds in the additive manufacturing industry. Hollow infill patterns offer a significant reduction in material costs as well as the opportunity for reducing the cooling times via pumping a coolant fluid through the hollow cavity in a similar fashion to traditional conformal cooling channels. A 3D Jacks Support Hollow mold model was determined to be the best performing design. FEA analysis was conducted to determine the maximum reduction in internal volume (percentage of material saved) that could be achieved without exceeding the …

The article discusses the issues of conducting field experiments to assess the reclamation conditions of soils, which are a particular issue of managing salinity and water-salt regime, as well as increasing the efficiency of desalination. Today, 46.6% of the irrigated lands of the Republic of Uzbekistan have salinization of varying degrees, of which 30.9% are weak, 13.3% are moderate and 2.5% are highly saline. Medium and highly saline lands make up 15.8%. The essence of the proposed method of flushing from the traditional one is that in late autumn or winter, the collectors-ditches are closed, and the groundwater is artificially …

Design Of A Channel Straightening Route Using A Combined Dam With A Through Part Made Of Tetrahedra, M.R. Bakiev, A.B. Хаlimbetov, С.Э. Шукурова, I.J. Asamatdinov

Irrigation and Melioration

The design of the route when regulating riverbeds, the direction of the flow to the point of water intake will require solving some issues, including the amount of deviation of the dynamic axis of the flow, constrained by regulatory structures. The main purpose of this work is to develop a method for calculating the deviation of the dynamic axis of a flow that is one-way constrained by a combined dam, then through part of which is made of tetrahedra. The problem is realized using the Varignon theorem and the flow conservation equation written for the streamlines where the household state …

Дождеваsome Aspects Of Water Management In The Republic Of Uzbekistan During The Period Of Independence (Reality And Forecast), S. Khodjaev

Irrigation and Melioration

To date, there is no alternative to the introduction of the principles of integrated water resources management (IWRM), this is proved by the research of SIC ICWC on the territory of the South Fergana main canal, where the specific water supply per hectare of irrigated area has been reduced by 32% on an area of 120 thousand hectares, that is up to 7 thousand m³/ha, instead of the limited ones 10 thousand m³/ha. Researches recommend cutting off all types of collector-drainage waters (CDW) from the river trunks of the Aral Sea basin, including the Syr-Darya and Amu-Darya, since CDW are …

Minimally Invasive Delivery Of 3d Shape Recoverable Constructs With Ordered Structures For Tissue Repair, Shixuan Chen, Mark Alan Carlson, Xiaowei Li, Aleem Siddique, Wuqiang Zhu, Jingwei Xie

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Minimally invasive procedures are becoming increasingly more common in surgery. However, the biomaterials capable of delivering biomimetic, three-dimensional (3D) functional tissues in a minimally invasive manner and exhibiting ordered structures after delivery are lacking. Herein, we reported the fabrication of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)-coated, 3D expanded nanofiber scaffolds and their potential applications in minimally invasive delivery of 3D functional tissue constructs with ordered structures and clinically appropriate sizes (4 cm × 2 cm × 1.5 mm). GelMA-coated, expanded 3D nanofiber scaffolds produced by combining electrospinning, gas-foaming expansion, hydrogel coating, and crosslinking are extremely shape recoverable after release of compressive strain, displaying …

Adapted Tricycle 2021, Carolyn Graven, Daniel Coleman, Sebin Cho, Farhan Khan

Mechanical Engineering

This document describes and outlines the details of the senior project completed by a team of four mechanical engineering students in their final year at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The team worked with Linda Wolff at California Children’s Services to reach their main goal: to create an exercise tricycle that can be used by Savannah. Savannah is a young adult, and she needs to be able to steer, brake, and power the tricycle using almost entirely her core muscles. Over the course of the project, the team worked to design and build a safe and functional tricycle …

F34 Beekeeper Assist, Kyle Ladtkow, Javier Guerra, Jose Velazquez, Ryan Heryford 2021 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

F34 Beekeeper Assist, Kyle Ladtkow, Javier Guerra, Jose Velazquez, Ryan Heryford

Mechanical Engineering

Alejandro Jauregui is a veteran who now works as a commercial beekeeper. He lost both of his legs during his service. While his current prostheses allow him to fully complete his work, he has found that inspection of the bee boxes causes him severe hip and back pain. Bee box inspection is a critical task for beekeeping, especially since he maintains about 200 hives every day. Our senior project team was tasked with designing and building a device that would help him move the top bee box out of the way to allow for inspection. We performed preliminary research into …

Design And Implementation Of A Modular Human-Robot Interaction Framework, Michael J. Juri

Master's Theses

With the increasing longevity that accompanies advances in medical technology comes a host of other age-related disabilities. Among these are neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and stroke, which significantly reduce the motor and cognitive ability of affected individuals. As these diseases become more prevalent, there is a need for further research and innovation in the field of motor rehabilitation therapy to accommodate these individuals in a cost-effective manner. In recent years, the implementation of social agents has been proposed to alleviate the burden on in-home human caregivers. Socially assistive robotics (SAR) is a new subfield of research …
