Current use of fossil fuels has raised adverse problems in today’s society. The biggest one of them is the climate change caused by emissions of greenhouse gases. For this reason, renewable energies, or energy flows which are replenished at the same rate as they are used, are needed to reduce carbon emissions in the range of 60-80% by the end of the twenty-first century. This report contains the design plan for PolyNet Design’s Senior Design Project. The PolyNet Design team comprises four mechanical engineering seniors who created a prototype for Raytheon Missile Systems. The overall goal of this project was to create a system that will launch a blanket from a packaged and folded state to an unfurled state and then securely wrap the blanket around a target. The team began with five initial concepts, and chose the Four-Rod model as their first construction concept. Construction of the Four Rod model evolved through several design iterations. The design is for Mr. Marlon Shepard, a new competitor on the Ski Team, who is in need of a new racing sit ski. Some of the top design priorities include reduced weight, increased rider comfort, and increased durability over existing designs. Sandwich composites utilize a low density core and relatively stiff face sheets. These structures are ideal for applications that require high compressive strength, high bending stiffness, and very low weight such as aerospace vehicles. However, one problem with sandwich composites is their susceptibility to low velocity impact damage. Low velocity impacts result in both external damage, in the form of dents, and internal damage, in the form of core crushing, face sheet delaminations (two adjacent plies separating from one another), fiber fractures and matrix cracks. This work presents an electrowetting system in which the actuation direction depends on the polarity of the applied voltage. Since electrowetting response depends on the voltage squared, it is typically independent of voltage sign to first order. However, the introduction of an electrochemicaal diode into the equivalent electrical circuit permits polarity-dependent behavior. Electrochemical diodes were created by making holes in the dielectric. The aluminum electrodes passivate and prevent current flow in one direction, creating diode-like behavior with high breakdown voltage. The resulting actuation forces were directly measured and are of comparable magnitude for both actuation directions.

To understand the basic material properties required in selecting a metallic interlayer for enhanced adhesion of diamondcoatings on the substrates, the interfaces between diamond and metals with different carbide formation enthalpies (Cu, Ti, and Al) are studied using density functional theory. It is found that the work of separation decreases, while the interface energy increases, with the carbide formation enthalpy ΔHf (Tiys (Ti>Cu>Al), is needed to achieve a higher overall interface strength. In addition, when the surface energy is larger than the interface energy, a wetted diamond/metal interface is formed during diamondnucleation, providing the strongest adhesion …

Radiation detection demands new scintillators with high quantum efficiency, high energy resolution, and short luminescence lifetimes. Nanocomposites consisting of quantum dots and Ce3+ doped nanophosphors may be able to meet these requirements. Here, we report the luminescence enhancement of LaF3:Ce/CdTe nanocomposites which were synthesized by a wet chemistry method. CdTe quantum dots in LaF3:Ce/CdTe nanocomposites are converted into nanowires, while in LaF3 /CdTe nanocomposites no such conversion is observed. As a result, the CdTe luminescence in LaF3:Ce/CdTe nanocomposites is enhanced about five times, while in LaF3 /CdTe nanocomposites no enhancement was …
