Identification Of A Maximum Guardrail Height For The Midwest Guardrail System Using Computer Simulation, Ramen D. Julin 2012 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Identification Of A Maximum Guardrail Height For The Midwest Guardrail System Using Computer Simulation, Ramen D. Julin

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

W-beam guardrails are by far the most common restraint system used along both local and major roadways. Traditionally, these restraint systems have been full-scale crash tested with a rail height ranging between 27 in. and 32 in. However, the maximum rail height which allows for safe performance of guardrails, especially in impacts involving small vehicles, has never been identified.

The main concern associated with an increase of the rail height is that small vehicles, because of their low profile, may have a tendency to lift the rail and penetrate the barrier. The objective of this project was to determine the …

Agent-Based Modeling Of Emergency Building Evacuation, Vi Q. Ha 2012 University of Connecticut - Storrs

Agent-Based Modeling Of Emergency Building Evacuation, Vi Q. Ha

Master's Theses

Panic during emergency building evacuation can cause crowd stampede, resulting in serious injuries and casualties. Agent-based methods have been successfully employed to investigate the collective human behavior during emergency evacuation in cases where the configurational space is extremely simple - usually one rectangular room - but not in evacuations of multi-room or multi-floor buildings. This implies that the effect of the complexity of building architecture on the collective behavior of the agents during evacuation has not been fully investigated. Here, we employ a system of self-moving particles whose motion is governed by the social-force model to investigate the effect of …

Effects Of Mismatched Electrodes On An At-Cut Quartz Resonator, Huijing He, Jinxi Liu, Jiashi Yang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

We study thickness-shear and thickness-twist free vibrations of a finite AT-cut quartz resonator with mismatched electrodes. The equations of anisotropic elasticity are used with the omission of the small elastic constant c56. An analytical solution is obtained using Fourier series from which the resonant frequencies, mode shapes, and vibration confinement resulting from the electrode inertia are calculated and examined.

Wayne State University Dissertations

Companies are increasing their manufacturing excellence in order to stay competitive in the globalizing market. Plants are becoming more complex year by year due to increasing product classes, hardware complexity, etc... The design and operation of manufacturing systems is of greater importance today than it was in the past. Many studies have been carried out on the design and operation of manufacturing systems by academicians and practitioners over the years, however, there is still no agreement on how to best predict and improve the factory performance (Gershwin, 2000). The studies are based on either analytical approaches or simulation-based approaches. Success …

Macro And Microfluidic Flows For Skeletal Regenerative Medicine, Brandon D. Riehl, Jung Yul Lim 2012 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Macro And Microfluidic Flows For Skeletal Regenerative Medicine, Brandon D. Riehl, Jung Yul Lim

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Fluid flow has a great potential as a cell stimulatory tool for skeletal regenerative medicine, because fluid flow-induced bone cell mechanotransduction in vivo plays a critical role in maintaining healthy bone homeostasis. Applications of fluid flow for skeletal regenerative medicine are reviewed at macro and microscale. Macroflow in two dimensions (2D), in which flow velocity varies along the normal direction to the flow, has explored molecular mechanisms of bone forming cell mechanotransduction responsible for flow-regulated differentiation, mineralized matrix deposition, and stem cell osteogenesis. Though 2D flow set-ups are useful for mechanistic studies due to easiness in in situ and post-flow …

An Integrated Framework For Configurable Product Assortment Planning, Seyed Ali Taghavi Behbahani

Wayne State University Dissertations

A manufacturer's assortment is the set of products or product configurations that the company builds and offers to its customers. While the literature on assortment planning is growing in recent years, it is primarily aimed at non-durable retail and grocery products. In this study, we develop an integrated framework for strategic assortment planning of configurable products, with a focus on the highly complex automotive industry. The facts that automobiles are highly configurable (with the number of buildable configurations running into thousands, tens of thousands, and even millions) with relatively low sales volumes and the stock-out rates at individual dealerships (even …
