A Hybrid Physical Model Based Artificial Neural Network Approach To Predict Surface Texture In The Honing Of Engine Cylinder Bore, Burhan Afzel, Xueping Zhang, Anil K. Srivastava

Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

This study proposes a hybrid model that utilizes a physical model and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) approach to predict surface roughness during cylinder bore honing with an improved prediction efficiency of 90% compared to the standalone physical model. As a critical component of internal combustion engine technology, improvement in the surface roughness of cylinder bore can significantly reduce friction, wear and oil consumption, resulting in improved engine performance. Desired surface roughness in cylinder bore is imparted by honing, which serves as the terminal process in cylinder bore manufacturing. The cylinder bore honing process consists of rough honing, fine honing, and …

Development Of An Anatomically And Electrically Conductive Brain Phantom For Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Hamzah A. Magsood

Theses and Dissertations

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique for diagnostics, prognostic, and treatments of various neurological diseases. However, the lack of anatomically realistic brain phantoms has made the experimental verification of stimulation strength in the form of induced electric fields/voltages in the brain tissues an impediment to developing new TMS coils, stimulators, and treatment protocols. There are significant technological, safety, and ethical limitations to test the potential TMS treatment procedures or develop enhancements and refine them on humans or animals. This work aims to bridge the gap by introducing and developing an innovative manufacturing and fabrications process to produce a …

Development Of A Single Use Device Intended To Wash Blood Clot Debris From A Stent Retriever In The Operating Room, Shane Diller 2020 Virginia Commonwealth University

Development Of A Single Use Device Intended To Wash Blood Clot Debris From A Stent Retriever In The Operating Room, Shane Diller

Theses and Dissertations

Ischemic stroke is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate surgical intervention to remove the blood clot that is lodged in the blood vessels of the brain. Mechanical thrombectomy, performed by an endovascular surgeon, involves inserting a stent retriever, which deploys distally and attempts to capture the clot when dragged backwards. A complication prevalent in 50% - 67% of cases is that the blood clot is only partially removed and clings to the mesh framework of the stent. The operating surgeon must either clean the debris from the stent retriever, to be reinserted or throw the stent retriever away and open …

Molten Aluminum Capillary Hole-Filling, Cheng-Nien Yu 2020 University of Kentucky

Molten Aluminum Capillary Hole-Filling, Cheng-Nien Yu

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The presence of micrometeoroids and space debris in open space raises the question of a mitigation of the damage caused by a possible impact on the man-made structures such as space shuttles, satellites, and the International Space Station. A method achieving metallic sealed hole would be of an interest for development. This dissertation studies a surface tension driven capillary filling/sealing phenomenon in a controlled atmosphere brazing process of aluminum. The filled vs. non-filled results are predictable using minimization of energy, which shows that the outcomes depend heavily on prescribed configurations of the hole. Equilibrium models show excellent agreement with experimental …

The Influence Of Cryogenic Machining On Surface Integrity And Functional Performance Of Titanium Alloys For Biomedical And Aerospace Applications, Ying Sun 2020 University of Kentucky

The Influence Of Cryogenic Machining On Surface Integrity And Functional Performance Of Titanium Alloys For Biomedical And Aerospace Applications, Ying Sun

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The excellent properties of titanium alloys such as high strength, as well as good corrosion and fatigue resistance are desirable for the biomedical and aerospace industry. However, the same properties that make titanium alloys desirable in high-performance applications also make these space-age materials “difficult-to-machine” materials, as the titanium alloys exhibit high cutting temperatures because of their high strength and low thermal conductivity.

Cryogenic machining is a severe plastic deformation (SPD) processes which uses liquid nitrogen as the coolant to take away the heat generated during machining in a relatively short time. Cryogenic machining can significantly reduce the cutting temperatures at …

Influence Of Size Effects On Surface Generation During Finish Machining And Surface Integrity In Ti-6al-4v, Ian S. Brown 2020 University of Kentucky

Influence Of Size Effects On Surface Generation During Finish Machining And Surface Integrity In Ti-6al-4v, Ian S. Brown

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Finish machining is an essential manufacturing process that is used to enhance the mechanical characteristics of critical components. The deformation that occurs at the tool and workpiece interface in finish machining significantly affects a host of component properties, commonly referred to as “surface integrity” properties. Surface roughness is a machining deformation-affected characteristic that is of high relevance in contemporary manufacturing. However, over recent decades it has been made clear that the material properties of the deformed surface layers are relevant to component performance as well. Predicting the overall surface quality of a machined component is of great relevance to the …

Robust Multi-Objective Design Of Suspension Systems, Muhammad Ali Khan 2020 Marshall University

Robust Multi-Objective Design Of Suspension Systems, Muhammad Ali Khan

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis presents a robust multi-objective optimal design of four-degree-of-freedom passive and semi-active suspension systems. The passive suspension system is used in a racing car and the semi-active suspension is implemented on a passenger car. Mathematical models of the commercial and racing vehicle suspension systems are used in the computer simulations. A robust multi-objective design of the suspension systems is carried out by considering the minimization of three objectives: passenger’s head acceleration (HA), suspension deflection (SD), and tire deflection (TD). The first objective is concerned with the passenger’s health and comfort. The suspension stroke is described by SD and the …

Combining Laser Aided Ablation And Polishing To Minimize Surface Roughness Of Additively Manufactured Aluminium Components, Sahil Bipinkumar Patel 2020 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Combining Laser Aided Ablation And Polishing To Minimize Surface Roughness Of Additively Manufactured Aluminium Components, Sahil Bipinkumar Patel

Masters Theses

“The surface roughness of additively manufactured parts is much higher than the acceptable range for most applications, thus post-processing is needed to qualify these parts for use. Laser polishing can be used to bring the surface roughness in an admissible range, but if the initial roughness is very high then the energy density for the polishing process needs to be very high to achieve a significant reduction in roughness. This high energy density can produce many process defects. Also, laser polishing alone cannot get rid of high wavelength asperities. Any waviness in the part can be linked with initial waviness …

Dynamic Testing: An Experimental Approach To Defect Identification In Additive Manufactured Parts, Aimee Allen 2020 Michigan Technological University

Dynamic Testing: An Experimental Approach To Defect Identification In Additive Manufactured Parts, Aimee Allen

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Today’s additive manufacturing (AM) industry produces specialized parts at low volume or with complex geometries. Traditional testing methods are effective, but costly and time consuming to perform. The AM industry lacks an optimized testing method for identifying internal defects that occur in parts. The evaluation of multiple parts printed on the same build plate for internal defects using various nondestructive (dynamic) testing techniques is presented. From these experiments, perspective was gained on when and how dynamic testing can be used to find defects. Insight gained from these experiments can help the industry in future testing for internal defects.

Snug Fit Crescent Wrench, Jacob M. Miterko, Michael E. Buchbinder, Gavin J. Griffith, Andrew J. Jarrett 2020 The University of Akron

Snug Fit Crescent Wrench, Jacob M. Miterko, Michael E. Buchbinder, Gavin J. Griffith, Andrew J. Jarrett

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The most commonly used brand of adjustable wrench, a Crescent Wrench, dates back to the early nineteen hundreds. The tolerances associated with the adjustable wheel used by the most common adjustable wrench designs allow the position of the lower jaw to vary while using the tool. These undesired fluctuations in the position of the lower jaw make it difficult to adjust the wrench to the desired position and keep it in position once the desired position is set.

The proposed adjustable wrench design addresses the tolerance issues by constraining the lower jaw with a new mechanism. The mechanism makes minor …
