Heat Transfer Enhancement And Applications Of Femtosecond Laser Processed Metallic Surfaces, Corey M. Kruse

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In the present work, functionalized 304 stainless steel metallic surfaces were created with the use of a Femtosecond Laser Surface Processing (FLSP) technique. The laser processing technique produces self-organized micro/nanostructures on the surface. The heat transfer performance of various FLSP functionalized surfaces were characterized through pool boiling and Leidenfrost experiments. Enhancement in both the nucleate and film boiling heat transfer were observed through an increase of the critical heat flux and heat transfer coefficient as well as shifts in the Leidenfrost temperature respectively. For both experiments, a polished reference sample was used as a baseline line to compare against the …

Analysis And Optimization Of The Scheffler Solar Concentrator, Simone Alberti

Master's Theses

The Scheffler reflector is a new solar concentrator design which maintains a fixed focus while only having a single axis tracking mechanism. This design makes the construction and operation of high temperature solar concentrators accessible to developing nations. In this project, I wrote computer simulation codes to better understand the dynamics and the effect of deformation or deviations from ideal conditions in order to define necessary manufacturing and operational tolerances. These tools and knowledge drove the prototyping of new reflector concepts by myself and other students on my team. A fiberglass prototype was able to drive the cost of a …

Methane Production By A Packed-Bed Anaerobic Digester Fed Dairy Barn Flush Water, Sean Richard Thomson 2014 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Methane Production By A Packed-Bed Anaerobic Digester Fed Dairy Barn Flush Water, Sean Richard Thomson

Master's Theses

Packed-bed digesters are an alternative to covered lagoon digesters for methane production and anaerobic treatment of dilute wastewaters such as dairy barn flush water. The physical media of packed-beds retain biofilms, often allowing increased treatment rates. Previous studies have evaluated several types of media for digestion of dilute wastewaters, but cost and media fouling have setback commercial development. A major operational cost has been effluent recirculation pumping.

In the present effort, a novel approach to anaerobic digestion of flush dairy water was developed at pilot-scale: broken walnut shells were used as a low-cost packed-bed medium and effluent recirculation was replaced …

Thermoelectric Waste Heat Recovery In Automobile Exhaust Systems: Topological Studies And Performance Analysis, Sumeet Kumar

Open Access Dissertations

The demand for improved fuel efficiency in automobiles has placed an emphasis on exhaust system waste heat recovery as a 40% of the fuel's chemical energy is lost to the environment in modern spark ignition engines. To advance fuel economy, researchers are currently evaluating technologies to exploit exhaust stream thermal power using thermoelectric generators (TEGs) that operate using the Seebeck effect. Thermoelectric generators have the potential to recover some of this waste energy in the exhaust stream potentially improving fuel economy by as much as 5%. ^ Attempts are made to maximize the electrical power generation by optimizing the thermoelectric …

The Building America Partnership for Improved Residential Construction (BA-PIRC) worked with two affordable housing builders who pursued and achieved CH certification. Both builders needed very few changes to reach CH; however, both were already certifying homes under the ENERGY STAR® for Homes Standard v.3.1. Habitat for Humanity affiliates’ mortgage terms are 0% interest over a 30-year mortgage to qualified buyers. To improve relevance of the study to the general homebuilding community, the cost-effectiveness calculations herein are based on a code-minimum reference rather than the builders’ standard practice (ENERGY STAR), and projected first year cash flow is provided for both the …

Modeling Of Mixed Friction Interactions Occurring In Axial Piston Pumps, Andrew C. Adelsperger, Lizhi Shang, Dan Mizell, Monika Ivantysynova 2014 Purdue University

Modeling Of Mixed Friction Interactions Occurring In Axial Piston Pumps, Andrew C. Adelsperger, Lizhi Shang, Dan Mizell, Monika Ivantysynova

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Axial piston pumps are integral to a variety of hydraulic systems due to their versatility and reliability, but most attempts to model them for design purposes have failed. However, software which fully models the fluid structures within these pumps, such as the FSTI gap design program, has improved significantly. Unfortunately, current discrepancies between simulated and measured friction forces on the cylinder due to the fluid drag and piston movement need to be eliminated so that more accurate simulation of these pumps in operation is possible. Friction measurements and FSTI simulation outputs were analyzed with MATLAB filters and graphs, resulting in …

The Role Of Surface Area In Catalytic Gasification Of Biomass, Elizabeth A. Wachs, Nitish Kumar, Indraneel Sircar, Prithviraja Basak, Jay P. Gore Phd

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Gasification of biomass has the potential to provide a carbon-negative source of liquid fuels. The current limited use of gasification is due in part to the high temperatures necessary to achieve high conversion levels. These temperatures can be lowered by the use of catalysts, but the mechanisms by which catalysts affect the reaction rate are not fully understood. Here, the structural component of potassium carbonate’s role in the gasification process was examined. Samples of pinewood sawdust were impregnated with potassium carbonate, then pyrolyzed with N2 in a fixed bed reactor at 750°C (heater thermocouple reading). Half of the char was …
