Implementation Of Multiscale Mechanisms In Finite Element Analysis Of Active Composite Structures, Amany Micheal, Yehia Bahei-El-Din 2022 The British University in Egypt

Implementation Of Multiscale Mechanisms In Finite Element Analysis Of Active Composite Structures, Amany Micheal, Yehia Bahei-El-Din

Centre for Advanced Materials

Interrogation of composite structures for inherent damage is investigated by implementing a three-tier analysis scheme. The analysis starts at the structure level where a general-purpose Finite Element code ABAQUS is employed to obtain the stress field in the second level of analysis which is the composite laminate. A special material routine is prepared to propagate the local fields to the individual plies and hence to the third level of analysis which is the microstructure modeling of the composite. Through the third level of analysis, interface damage between fiber and matrix is checked implementing a certain failure criteria. The interaction between …

Atomistic-Continuum Membrane And Machine Learning Models For Two-Dimensional Materials, Upenda Yadav 2022 Michigan Technological University

Atomistic-Continuum Membrane And Machine Learning Models For Two-Dimensional Materials, Upenda Yadav

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

“What could we do with layered structures with just the right layers?” asked Richard Feynman in his famous 1959 lecture, “There’s plenty of room at the bottom.” With the help of the amazing developments of the past several years, we are coming close to answering that question. In 2004, graphene was first isolated from graphite and only six short years later it won the Nobel Prize in Physics. Graphene is one atomic layer of Carbon, it is the thinnest and yet the strongest materials we have ever seen. It is 200 times stronger than its equivalent weight in steel and …

Peridynamic Material Correspondence Models: Bond-Associated And Higher-Order Formulations, WaiLam Chan 2022 University of Kentucky

Peridynamic Material Correspondence Models: Bond-Associated And Higher-Order Formulations, Wailam Chan

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Peridynamic material correspondence model is able to incorporate material constitutive models directly from classical continuum mechanics theory. However, conventional correspondence model faces two major technical issues for its application to practical problems. The first is the material instability, which results severe oscillations in the predicted displacement fields. The second issue is the length scale effects of materials mechanical behavior at low length scales. This research journey mainly consists of three stages. The first two stages of this research journey focus on the development of the bond-associated peridynamic material correspondence model to inherently remove the material instability. The last stage focuses …

Oxidative Aging And Fracture Behavior Of Polymers And Composites: Theory, Modeling And Experiments, Shabnam Konica 2022 Michigan Technological University

Oxidative Aging And Fracture Behavior Of Polymers And Composites: Theory, Modeling And Experiments, Shabnam Konica

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Polymers and their composites (PMC) have emerged as effective alternative materials in structural, aerospace, and automotive industries due to their lightweight and tunable properties compared to metals. However, these materials tend to degrade during their operations in extreme environments. In this work, two extreme conditions are considered: - i) high-temperature oxidative degradation of polymers and polymer-based composites ii) Fracture and damage of polymer-based composites under thermo-mechanical loading.

Polymer oxidation starts when oxygen from the ambient diffuses into the bulk material and initiates chemical reactions to develop a coarse, brittle oxide layer on the exposed surface. The oxidative degradation process is …

Ternary Flow Simulation Based On The Conservative Phase Field Lattice Boltzmann Method, Chunheng Zhao 2022 CUNY City College

Ternary Flow Simulation Based On The Conservative Phase Field Lattice Boltzmann Method, Chunheng Zhao

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, we numerically investigated multi-phase fluid dynamics (2 and 3-phase flow) by solving the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the conservative phase field (CPF) equations using the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). To effectively simulate the large-scale multi-phase physics, we developed an open-source software, IMEXLBM, which can be easily parallelized on both CPUs and GPUs without significant modifications to the code. We first validated various parts of this software and then used this method to study the interaction of rising bubbles with a static oil droplet as well as the engulfment of the water droplet on solids coated with a …

A Coupled Viscoplastic-Damage Constitutive Model For Semicrystalline Polymers, Jeffrey Wiersma 2022 Michigan Technological University

A Coupled Viscoplastic-Damage Constitutive Model For Semicrystalline Polymers, Jeffrey Wiersma

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The ease of processing, recyclability, and ideal cost to weight ratio makes the semi-crystalline polymers attractive in the aerospace, automotive, and defense industries. Use of semicrystalline polymers for engineering design requires a thorough understanding of their response to mechanical deformation, rate of loading, temperature, and failure mechanisms. However, there lacks a generally agreed upon constitutive model to capture the large deformation elastic-viscoplastic response of semicrystalline polymers while incorporating the strain-rate dependence and damage behavior. To address this aspect, the objective of this dissertation is to develop an elastic-viscoplastic constitutive model to predict the rate dependent, large deformation response of semicrystalline …
