Silicon/carbon (Si/C) composite materials were prepared through high-energy ball milling and high-temperature solid-phase method, and then coated with thin polyaniline (PAni) film by oxidation. The microstructure and component of the composites were characterized by SEM, XRD, IR, TG, and the electrochemical performance was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge tests. The results showed that the surface of PAni/Si/G/C composite was coating with complete lamellar structure of PAni film. Its reversible capacity was 784 mAh·g-1 and 690 mAh·g-1 could be maintained after 50th charge-discharge cycles.

Graphite plate electrodes were treated with oxygen plasma and doped with oxygen as well as oxygen functional groups. With the treatment, the activities of graphite plate electrodes toward VO2+/VO2+ redox reactions were improved. FT-IR and EDS analysis results indicated that oxygen functional groups were introduced to the surface of graphite plates after oxygen plasma treatment. In this paper, the graphite plate treated for 20 min showed the highest activity. The average charge efficiency reached 91%, suggesting an increase of 19%, compared with that of the untreated graphite plate under a current density of 8 mA·cm-2 …

College of Engineering: Graduate Celebration Programs
Natural structure with simultaneous negative permittivity and permeability has not been discovered yet. However, using specially-designed metal embedded in dielectric bodies can achieve a kind of artificial negative index. This periodic structure which is smaller than the guided wavelength is known as a metamaterial. However, recent designs of metamaterials have some disadvantages when they are used in the application of solar cell. The perfect absorption is only within a narrow band, and for most of the solar spectrum, the absorption is no more than 10%. Here, a new kind of absorber for the solar spectrum has been designed and analyzed, …

We report a single-crystal neutron diffraction study of the layered Sr2IrO4. This work unambiguously determines the magnetic structure of the system and reveals that the spin orientation rigidly tracks the staggered rotation of the IrO6 octahedra in Sr2IrO4. The long-range antiferromagnetic order has a canted spin configuration with an ordered moment of 0.208(3) μB/Ir site within the basal plane; a detailed examination of the spin canting yields 0.202(3) and 0.049(2) μB/site for the a axis and the b axis, respectively. It is intriguing that forbidden nuclear reflections …

We find Mn surface segregation for single crystals of Mn doped Li2B4O7, nominally Li1.95Mn0.05B4O7(001), but as the temperature increases, evidence of this Mn surface segregation diminishes significantly. At room temperature, the surface photovoltaic charging is significant for this pyroelectric material but is quenched at a temperature well below that seen for the undoped Li2B4O7 samples. The suppression of surface charging in the region of 120 °C that accompanies the temperature of Mn dissolution in the bulk of Li2B4 …

Managing Moisture - The Key To Healthy Internal Wall Insulation Retrofits Of Solid Walls, Joseph Little, Benat Arregi
Conference papers
This study investigates the appropriateness of internally insulating solid walls to the Passivhaus standard. A number of variables are assessed using numerical hygrothermal simulation (under EN 15026) to check (1) associated risk of mould growth on original substrate and (2) if they result in a greater likelihood of timber decay at built-in joist ends. While air and vapour control layers (AVCLs) perform well regarding mould risk in low absorption walls, the results question their appropriateness where joist ends are built-in: when AVCLs are used, moisture levels at joist ends can potentially rise above critical thresholds, even in low absorption walls. …

Predicting Creep In An Alloy 617 Pressure Vessel Using Uniaxial Bar Test Data, Justin Allen, Allyssa Bateman, Yudhishthir Bhetwal, Theodora Caldwell, Joseph Croteau, Elias Lindau
College of Engineering Poster Presentations
Alloy 617 is being investigated as a candidate for application in next generation nuclear plants (NGNPs), including the very high temperature reactor (VHTR). Creep deformation concerns the lifetime and failure of heat exchangers used at the very high operating temperatures and pressures of such plants. In order to meet the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Boiler and Pressure Vessel code (ASME B&PV), and be certified for use in NGNPs, a thorough understanding of creep must be demonstrated. Current methods of testing creep have limitations and there remains uncertainty and controversy as to the applicability of these tests to more complex …

Precipitated intermetallic phases strengthen aluminum aircraft alloys; these inclusions also establish localized electrochemical environments, significantly influencing the bulk corrosion behavior of such alloys. To gain insight on the effects of intermetallic phases on the bulk corrosion behavior, two established forms of electrochemical characterization techniques were used, polarization scans and impedance spectroscopy. This effort was undertaken to:
- Provide a statistical body of electrochemical data for aluminum alloys,
- Provide fundamental electrochemical parameters to aide in a continuum scale modeling effort,
- Validate the effect of solution chemistry on bulk corrosion behavior,
- Determine the influence of precipitated intermetallic phases on the bulk corrosion behavior, …

Anisotropic Compositional Expansion And Chemical Potential For Amorphous Lithiated Silicon Under Stress Tensor, Valery I. Levitas, Hamed Attariani

Si is a promising anode material for Li-ion batteries, since it absorbs large amounts of Li. However, insertion of Li leads to 334% of volumetric expansion, huge stresses, and fracture; it can be suppressed by utilizing nanoscale anode structures. Continuum approaches to stress relaxation in LixSi, based on plasticity theory, are unrealistic, because the yield strength of LixSi is much higher than the generated stresses. Here, we suggest that stress relaxation is due to anisotropic (tensorial) compositional straining that occurs during insertion-extraction at any deviatoric stresses. Developed theory describes known experimental and atomistic simulation …

Hole lifetime in the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) singlephoton detector was evaluated by the analysis of drain current histograms for different light intensities and substrate voltages. It was found that the peaks in the histogram corresponding to the larger number of stored holes grew as the gate bias decreased. This was attributed not to the increased light absorption efficiency or collection efficiency of the photo-generated holes, but to the prolonged hole lifetime presumably caused by the higher transverse electric field inside the body of SOI MOSFET.

Significant progress in area of nano-structured thin film systems has taken place in recent decades. In particular, diamond thin film systems are being widely studied for their wear resistant, optical and electronic properties. Of the various methods researchers use to modify the structure of such films, three techniques in particular are of interest due to their versatility: modification of the growth atmosphere, growth on metalized substrates, providing an interfacial layer, and modification through post-growth ion implantation. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects each has to the structure and composition of elements. Different techniques are applied in …

The study consisted of reactor design used for transesterification process, effect of glycerol separation on transesterification reaction, determination of biodiesel quality, and mass balance analysis. The reactor was designed by integrating circulated pump/stirrer, static mixer, and sprayer that intensify the reaction in the outer tank reactor. The objective was to reduce the use of methanol in excess and to shorten the processing time. The results showed that the reactor that applied the glycerol separation was able to compensate for the decreased use of the reactant methanol from 6:1 to 5:1 molar ratio, and changed the mass balance in the product, …

Thermoelectric device is investigated by a number of researchers in order to enhance the thermoelectric efficiency. It is known that the efficiency can be improved by quantum effect. However, it is difficult to measure the thermoelectric characteristics of nanometer-scale structures. Thus a new measurement method is expected to be developed. We propose to apply Kelvin-probe force microscopy (KFM) to characterization of thermoelectric materials. KFM can locally observe surface potential of Fermi energy of a sample without touching the sample surface. In the present paper, we estimate the Seebeck coefficient of thin Si-on-insulator layers using KFM.
