The objective of the study presented herein is to compare the energy required to densify loose, liquefiable sand by various techniques and the energy required to liquefy the soil by earthquake shaking. The states-of-practice for performing remedial ground densification and evaluating earthquake liquefaction potential of loose saturated sands have evolved relatively independently of each other. There has been increasingly high intensity of acceleration ever recorded during earthquakes in recent times. In consistence with this trend several characteristics have been unearthed regarding performances of rockfill dams. With due considerations to these, damage features of high rockfill dams during recent earthqukes in Japan and China are briefly introduced herein, together with those previously reported. As an indicator of overall distress to the dams, the crest settlement was taken up and it was shown that the settlement tends to increase up to about 1.5% of the height of the dam with increasing acceleration during earthquakes.

Assessing liquefaction potential, in situ screening, and remediation of non-plastic silty soils are difficult problems. Presence of silt particles among the sand grains in silty soils affects the soil response in each of the above cases in different ways. First part of this paper addresses the effects of silt content on liquefaction resistance, hydraulic conductivity, and coefficient of consolidation of silty soils compared to clean sand. This paper presents an overview of the principles and practices of seismic microzonation with some case studies in India. India has experienced major damages and loss of life due to earthquakes. Macrozonation map in Indian seismic code IS-1893 is frequently revised soon after a major earthquake in the country. New revision which was published in 2002 after Bhuj earthquake in 2001 contains four macro zones. Ten drained cyclic strain-controlled direct simple shear tests were conducted on compacted low-plasticity clayey sand to measure its cyclic compression properties. The soil had 37 % fines, liquid limit of 28% and plasticity index 14. The relative compaction of specimens prior to consolidation and cyclic shearing was between 80 and 90 %. Cyclic compression is expressed as the accumulation of vertical strain with the number of cycles, N. The paper proposes and validates a constitutive model simulating the change of resistance along clay slip surfaces under both undrained and drained conditions. The proposed model is based on (a) the critical state theory and (b) the assumption that the critical state changes once failure is reached, in terms of the further shear displacement. Under undrained conditions, the proposed model simulates the excess pore pressure generation and subsequently the continuous change of clay resistance along the slip surface from its initial value to the peak strength and then at large displacement the residual value measured in constant-volume ring shear tests. …

A geotechnical experimentation site is being developed near Georgetown, South Carolina, to study the effect of soil age on liquefaction resistance. The site is located in an area called Hobcaw Barony on a 200,000-year-old beach to barrier-island sand deposit. Initial investigations conducted at the site include seismic cone penetration tests with pore pressure measurements, standard penetration tests with energy measurements, seismic crosshole tests, dilatometer testing, and fixed-piston sampling.
