If seismic hazards are deemed to be unacceptably high because of poor soil conditions, it is often possible to achieve improved seismic performance through the use of one or more soil improvement techniques. Poor performance is the result of inadequate strength, low stiffness, or insufficient drainage. Many improvement techniques have been evolved over the years, mostly through trial and error, aimed at improving at least one of these properties. When selecting one or more mitigation methods, it is important to consider the effectiveness of the improvement approach for the particular situation at hand, cost, environmental consequences, regulatory requirements, and technical …

Determining the residual strength of liquefied sand is essential for estimating post-earthquake stability of vulnerable earth structures, or calculating runout of liquefaction flow slides. Current practice is to select values from a database of back-calculated residual strengths from failure case histories, which have been related to representative penetration test resistance numbers in the failed materials. Pile-supported wharf is a general option in port design to provide lateral resistance and bearing capacity under both static and dynamic loadings. In situ large-scale physical modeling using surface wave generator was performed to study the dynamic soil-structure interactions in pile-supported wharves and to serve as a prototype for in situ monitoring station. A wharf model consisting of 2 steel pipe piles welded on a steel slab was installed on a reconstituted underwater embankment. The paper concerns vibrodriving and vibrocompaction processes applied to granular soils and presents experiments able to characterize the behaviour of sand subjected to vertical vibration. Soil degradation phenomena arising during vibro-driving are first described and the vibro-fluidization of dry granular matter is discussed. The paper concentrates on the shear strength degradation of vibrated dry granular soils. Vertical vibration is then particularly investigated. The volume change during vertical vibration is described and the sand behaviour during vibration is also discussed. To extend current measurement and data synthesis techniques for resonant column testing, random vibration transfer functions measured using a modified 6 inch (152.4 mm) diameter Drnevich free-free resonant column device are evaluated against viscoelastic theories of homogeneous and heterogeneous soil models. By means of the transfer function approach, it is found that the first four resonant peaks of the soil column response can be captured experimentally with some instrumental adaptations. By calibration against theoretical transfer functions, the ability to characterize the modulus and damping properties of the soil samples over a broad range of frequencies is demonstrated. Different specimen preparation methods such as moist tamping, dry funnel deposition, slurry deposition, dry air pluviation have been reported in the literature to investigate the undrained behavior of silty sands. Similarly, different means have been used to densify the soils prepared with such methods. Ongoing research shows that the change in undrained behavior (e.g. change in initial peak deviator stress and instability angle) due to different deposition densities is significantly affected by the densification technique utilized within a particular deposition method. This paper presents a new mathematical approach for the analysis of harmonically vibrating horizontal, linear, elastic uniform pile. The soil properties may vary from layer to layer. No separation is allowed at the soil-pile interface. The pile is modeled as a number of cylindrical segments connected by rigid nodes. The length of each segment is chosen such that the effects of the soil inhomogenity are accounted for. The governing differential equation for an arbitrary pile segment is obtained and solved. This paper compares the experimental study of seismic response of a hill site near Tehran and numerical modeling of the test site using a hybrid finite-boundary element code named HYBRID. Both longitudinal and transversal profiles of the hill have been instrumented using Guralp CMG-6TD seismological stations and some hours of ambient noise were recorded. The H/V ratios for each station were calculated and the amplification patterns and corresponding frequencies of each station have been extracted. Design of an on-site seismic early warning system for critical facilities, based on P-wave detection, requires knowledge of local seismicity, analysis of strong-motion records, and local geological settings. Internet-based USGS’s interactive deaggregation of probabilistic seismic hazard was used to identify principal sources of earthquake hazard at two dam sites in western Oregon. The dams are located in the western margin of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States where Cascadia Subduction Zone and shallow gridded crustal earthquakes are dominant sources of earthquake hazard. For each source, the magnitude, distance, and number of standard deviations (ε) were determined to develop target acceleration response spectra using ground motion prediction equations.
