International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The flood plain embankments of the Serchio river have been constructed since the XVIII century and construction details are not known. These embankments have experienced failures several times during their life (last in December 2009). After the last event a detailed geotechnical investigation has been carried out. This paper discusses the necessary criteria for a cost – effective campaign considering the total length of the embankments (30 km) and the requested level of detail. In fact levee failure, although it is of limited extension, causes the achievement of the ultimate limit state of the entire embankment system. The campaign, in …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Addicks and Barker Dams are two flood risk management structures owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and recently classified as extremely high risk. These dams were built in the 1940’s in west Houston, Texas, upstream of a densely populated metropolitan area. The dams consist of 11 and 13 miles of rolled earth embankments, outlet structures with five barrel conduits, and uncontrolled spillways at both ends of both dams. The original design of both dams provided for four of the five outlet conduit barrels to be ungated, permitting a combined uncontrolled discharge from both dams of …

Remediation Of Distressed Frozen Earth Cofferdams, Joseph A. Sopko, Robert Chamberland
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Artificial Ground Freezing was used to provide temporary earth support and groundwater control for a complex system of three frozen earth cofferdams for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District’s Harbor Siphons Project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Site geometry and frozen earth structural design precluded construction of one large excavation, requiring the component system of the tangential cofferdams. High groundwater velocity prevented the formation of the frozen earth walls during various stages of the project. Remedial methods including external dewatering, permeation grouting, jet grouting, timber shoring and sheet piling were attempted to complete the project. Ultimately a more aggressive ground freezing program was …

Some Remarks On The Influence Of Deep Excavations On Neighbouring Buildings, Cătălin Căpraru, Anton Chirică
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Increasing density of urban areas leads to building high-rise buildings with deep foundations, enabling their basements for car parking and facilities. Increasing depth of the foundation of these buildings increases also the need for more rigid earth retaining systems. Thus, generally, due to the importance of the neighboring buildings, great care has to be taken in the design process of the retaining structure and the support system of deep excavation in densely built urban areas. The paper summarizes a parametric study on a geotechnical model of a deep excavation, proper to Bucharest subsoil, Romania. The analysis of the excavation was …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Recently new highway, motorway and railway projects take place in many developing countries within the aggressive infrastructure investment programme of governments. In rugged topography, engineers face the challenging problems of designing safe and cost effective cuts and fills for these projects especially under seismic loading and marginal stability conditions. Overall stability mechanism and safety of the cut generally controls the design decisions for the relevant section. In addition, because of the construction width limitations, in some mechanically stabilized earth wall projects sufficient width to accommodate the strip lengths of the retaining system cannot be provided. To eliminate all these problems, …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Lee County widened Mississippi River Road north of the Keokuk, Iowa in the early 1990s, removing material from the toe of slopes along the alignment. Gabion walls were constructed to provide grade separation. Significant precipitation occurred in the spring of 2010, and two (2) wall sections (about 100 feet each in length) failed. Based on our site exploration and instrumentation monitoring data, the gabion wall sections appeared to fail due to additional lateral load from a soil mass sliding on top of the shale bedrock and a buildup of high ground water levels. To support the additional load of the …

In practice is for various reasons very difficult to assume a real sliding failure on the slip surface, which can be created from more parts (straight and curved) with different local soil characteristics. Therefore is usually at classical methods of slope stability shear surface replaced, for example by a cylindrical surface for cohesive soils. An important factor affecting stability is also the effect of groundwater. In practice is just the influence of groundwater very often reason of landslides on natural slopes and cut slopes. Such landslide has happened in the case of construction the retaining wall on the highway D1 …

Case Study Of Landslides In Kabylia Region, Algeria, Sadaoui Omar, Sadaoui Samir, Bahar Ramdane
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Kabylia is mountainous and coastline region of Algeria. Every year, particularly in the winter, it is affected by landslides displacing an important volume of detritic materials, and causing damages to infrastructures, housing and public facilities. It takes place in geological formations that are particularly favourable to this type of movement, because of the heterogeneity of their facies and the impermeability of some layers. Experience shows that the main cause of the landslides in this region is the combination of several passive and active factors, as geology, morphology, hydrology, climate and anthropic activities. The exceptional rains of winter 2012 triggered a …

The accidental topography and heterogeneous Lebanese geology in addition to the active seismicity have initiated the static and dynamic stability analysis of Lebanese slopes. In this paper, the stability of a sandy Lebanese slope situated at Mansourieh near Beirut is investigated using deterministic and probabilistic approaches. The characterization of the variability of the slope soil properties is done based on geological investigation, as well as geophysical (Resistivity and Ambient noise) and geotechnical tests performed on this slope. Three dimensional 3D static deterministic analyses is performed to determine the overall safety factor of the slope and to find the location of …

Two separate deep-seated, creeping landslides exist in close proximity in a mountainous area with highly heterogeneous geological and geotechnical conditions. The ground movements are measured at a depth greater than 50m and affect 65m-high G4 embankment and 240m-long S3 tunnel that are under traffic since 2004. The first landslide affecting the embankment initiated shortly after completion of construction in an area where the highway was realigned after an old, pre-existing unstable area was identified during the design. Tunnel S3, about 300m to the east of embankment G4, suffered from slope instability during construction. This was successfully dealt with and the …
