The China Central Television (CCTV) New Headquarter is situated in Chaoyang District of Beijing. It consists of two main towers and podiums. The bored piles with diameter of 1200mm and single pile bearing capacity of 11000kN were chosen for the towers. Through the combination of pile-end and shaft grouting, as well as in-situ bearing capacity tests of piles with different pile length, the pile length, the costs and construction difficulties were reduced considerably. A massive urban excavation is required to construct the below-grade rail platforms for the Transbay Transit Center. A performance-based approach was used to design the minimum stiffness of the shoring system to limit excavation-induced ground movements to appropriate magnitudes and minimize impact to adjacent infrastructure. During construction, a fully-automated near real-time digital geotechnical monitoring system that integrates wireless sensor data streams into an integrated database and decision support system called the Global Analyzer is used to track the performance of this excavation. Both spectral ratio of the horizontal components of sedimentary site to rocky site (Hs/Hr) or site/reference, and Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) methods have been used for estimation the site effects parameters. Two case histories are presented for earth retention structures where the results of construction monitoring were used to verify key criteria used for the design of the structures. One case history consists of a sheet-pile bulkhead structure for the unloading of bulk aggregate products in Bay City, Michigan. The front wall of the sheet-pile bulkhead was analyzed for heavy surcharge pressures from the adjacent aggregate stockpiles. The sheet-piles are laterally supported by sheet-pile deadman and tierods. Therefore there are strong political and industrial forces, especially in northern Europe, which support the development of the offshore wind industry. The present paper presents the results of drained tests on offshore bucket foundations for wind turbines in saturated dense sand.
