A Comparison Of Three And Two-Dimensional Analyses Of Rockfill Dams In Narrow Valleys (A Case Study: The Vanyar Dam), Mehdi Derakhshandi, Mojtaba Honarmand, Amir Hossein Sadeghpour 2013 Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch, Tehran, Iran

A Comparison Of Three And Two-Dimensional Analyses Of Rockfill Dams In Narrow Valleys (A Case Study: The Vanyar Dam), Mehdi Derakhshandi, Mojtaba Honarmand, Amir Hossein Sadeghpour

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A two-dimensional analysis of the largest cross-section of earth dams may generate appropriate results provided that the dam is located in a U-shape valley. The Vanyar dam has been constructed in a narrow valley. With regard to the geometrical consideration of the valley, there is no plane strain condition throughout the long side of the dam. In this research, the results of three and two dimensional numerical analyses of the Vanyar dam are compared in terms of settlement, pore water pressure, and total vertical stress. These analyses were carried out by a finite difference method through FLAC-3D and FLAC-2D softwares. …

A Non-Linear Method To Estimate Elastic Settlement Of Shallow Foundations Using Small-Strain Stiffness, Reza Amini Ahidashti, Abdolhosain Hadad

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In this paper, we investigated how to utilize the small-strain stiffness order to estimate the settlement of shallow foundation on granular soils. For this purpose, a power law equation between normalized shear modulus and shear strain was presented. Based on elasticity theory and proposed equation, a new method in term of small-strain stiffness was suggested order to estimate the immediate settlement. In order to evaluate the proposed method, a series case history was studied, that included the loading tests and seismic geophysical tests. These field measurements are compared to the predicted values. The result indicated that the proposed method in …

An Example Of Teaching Slope Stability From True Case Histories, Diego Lo Presti 2013 University of Pisa, Italy

An Example Of Teaching Slope Stability From True Case Histories, Diego Lo Presti

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The use of case histories in classroom mainly involves an inductive teaching approach. This paper discusses the intrinsic advantages and possible drawbacks of such an inductive approach. More specifically, the paper illustrates an example of teaching the class of “slope stability” based on such methodology. The class takes place at the University of Pisa in the second tier degree of Civil Engineering of Infrastructures. The inductive teaching approach is very popular in the British/American Higher Education system. On the contrary it is not so popular in Latin countries like Italy. In order to make more clear the comprehension of this …

Case Histories In Geotechnical Engineering Education, James Mahar 2013 Idaho State University, Pocatello, ID

Case Histories In Geotechnical Engineering Education, James Mahar

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Case histories can be taught as an individual course or as part of a specific engineering class. These studies are very important when the teaching methodology incorporates the observational approach in design and construction. Several resources for case histories are available. However the most insightful are those in which the instructor has personal knowledge or the student participates in a case history-type project. One of the most important elements in engineering education is the sequential design approach in civil works projects. Case histories provide a very effective means of illustrating the complete design process which is the framework of professional …

Case Study: Application Of The Observational Method Using High Strain Dynamic Tests, Adolfo C. Caicedo-Aspiazu, Nelson Caicedo 2013 CH2M Hill, New York, NY

Case Study: Application Of The Observational Method Using High Strain Dynamic Tests, Adolfo C. Caicedo-Aspiazu, Nelson Caicedo

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In-situ High Strain Dynamic Testing (HSDT) was developed more than 40 years ago. When a hammer or drop weight strikes the top of a pile, a compressive stress wave travels down its shaft at a speed that is a function of the elastic modulus and mass density. The impact induces a force and particle velocity at the top of the pile that can be measured using accelerometers and strain gauges. This paper discusses the theory behind using HSDT instruments and the procedures to calculate the capacity of the pile. The role of selecting the proper instrument to record them is …

Composite Shallow & Deep Foundation In Karst Geology For The Countryside Christian Center New Sanctuary Clearwater, Florida, Said Iravani 2013 Iravani P. A., Tampa, FL

Composite Shallow & Deep Foundation In Karst Geology For The Countryside Christian Center New Sanctuary Clearwater, Florida, Said Iravani

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Evaluation, design, construction, and monitoring of foundations in karst geology are challenging tasks. The random presence of karst features, the variation in size, extent, and depth of karst features, and the different origin and geological characteristics of karst features make site characterization and investigation difficult. A balance between non-intrusive filed tests is useful to improve the site characterization. Non-intrusive field tests which provide multi-dimensional mapping such as Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) or Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can provide spatial coverage instead of point data. Non-intrusive field tests which are not sensitive to moisture such as shear wave velocity measurements can …

Foundations Conditions Study For Aeolian Power Units On Soft Soils Under Static And Seismic Loads. Case Study, Anton Chirica, Dragos Vintila, Diana Tenea

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper presents the analysis of foundations conditions under static and seismic loads for a wind farm located in the Eastern part of Romania. From lithological point of view, the location is characterized by a soft cohesive strata alternation over 40m deep. Some design considerations for obtaining the most economical foundation options are discussed. By taking into account the static and seismic conditions, the soil – structure interaction (S.S.I.) is also revealed together with conclusions on the aeolian towers’ foundations solutions.

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper will discuss the geotechnical aspects of foundation design, construction support, and the team work necessary to replace and upgrade 14 bridges along an existing, trafficked rail line through Central Illinois. Seven bridges were constructed using previously completed designs and seven bridges were constructed using a multi-disciplinary design-build approach. The geotechnical team provided construction support for the Phase I bridges while concurrently conducting geotechnical investigations and developing design criteria for the Phase II bridges. The project also involved many logistical considerations including minimizing bridge “out of service time” to less than ten hours for the construction of each bridge, …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The State of Bihar, India experienced substantial flooding in the Ganges Basin as a result of levee (embankment) non performance. As a result of the 2008 failures the Bihar Water Resources Department is examining, as a programmatic model, the US experience in establishing and conducting the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Levee Safety Program. This case model examination is intended to structure a new program for managing the Bihari embankment infrastructure. Similar to many historical flood control initiatives throughout the world, India’s embankment infrastructure shows the effects of aging and multi-purpose use of the facilities. To examine what …

Determination Of In-Situ Stress At Desilting Chamber Of Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project (Bhutan), To Reconfirm Its Orientation Influenced By Topography — A Case Study, D. S. Subrahmanyam, S. Sengupta, R. K. Sinha, G. Shyam

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project stage-I was conceptualized in Wangdue- Phodrang district of Bhutan for harnessing the hydro-power potentiality of Punatsangchhu River. Regionally the project area is located within a part of a gneissic terrain of Tethyan Belt of Bhutan Himalayas. The project envisages construction of 195m high concrete gravity dam across the river Punatsangchhu. For Desilting chamber and Powerhouse, it is always desirable to carry out in-situ stress measurement in such huge underground openings for designing of the support types. The stability of the underground cavern gets enhanced if the long axis of the cavern is oriented along or sub-parallel to …

Insurance Industry Perspective On The Importance Of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering For Commercial Structures, James Saldaña 2013 Arrowhead General Insurance Agency, San Diego, CA

Insurance Industry Perspective On The Importance Of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering For Commercial Structures, James Saldaña

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Pricing in the commercial catastrophe insurance market is primarily driven by computer models. For the evaluation of commercial earthquake insurance risk, the majority of insurers, reinsurers and more recently, rating agencies, rely heavily on the output models developed by a few software vendors. Insurers and reinsurers evaluate their total risk based on output from one or more of these models, and develop prices that depend on the loss estimate data from the models. In an effort to most accurately potential, soil conditions and engineering practices are recognized by the model vendors and incorporated into the loss calculation algorithms. When an insurer …

Response Of Piled Raft Foundation On Soft Clay Under Seismic Load, Alireza Saeedi Azizkandi, Tara Maali, Mohammad Hassan Baziar 2013 Iran University of Science and Technology, Iran

Response Of Piled Raft Foundation On Soft Clay Under Seismic Load, Alireza Saeedi Azizkandi, Tara Maali, Mohammad Hassan Baziar

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A number of researchers has extensively investigated the vertical load bearing mechanism of piled raft foundation, by applying elasticity theory and finite element method. The study on the load bearing mechanism under horizontal loading or during earthquakes, however, is very limited. This is partially because piled raft foundations are considered as raft foundations in the current design practice. Since the behavior of a piled raft foundation during earthquakes is considered fairly complex due to dynamic interaction among a raft, piles and a soil, the design procedure should include the effect of this mechanism in an appropriate manner. In other hands, …

Evaluation Of The Failure Probability Of Slopes In Residual Soil From The Aburrá Valley, Medellín Colombia, Juan Pablo Villada Rodas, Manuel Roberto Villarraga

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In recent years the evaluation of failure probability on slope stability analyses has become important because it has been presented as a representative method helping to complement the factor of safety. As part of this paper, it is proposed the evaluation of the failure probability in cut slopes on residual soils from the Aburrá valley. Statistical analyses were performed on the most important variables, considering continuous statistical distributions. Sensitivity analyses were performed to quantify their influence in the stability. As a result, some abacuses are developed in which the height and the slope angle are related to the failure probability …

Finding F.O.S For Flow Type Landslide With Static Liquefaction At Karshingsa – A Case Study, Gokul K. Bayan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Karshingsa is a hilly terrain situated in lower Himalayan region under Arunachal Pradesh in India. It expresses occurrence of severe landslides of debris flow nature almost every year as and when consecutive 3-month rainfall precipitation during peak monsoon period exceeds about 2,300 mm, all along the lower Himalayan region of Eurasian plateau most particularly in Karshingsa area. Study carried out in the lower belt of Arunachal Himalaya for about more than one decade proclaims that 45%-55% landslides are flow type origin, the debris of which are flowing like liquid. Mechanism of such flow failure is static liquefaction developed in a …

Selection Of Most Appropriate Procedures For Seismic Evaluation Of Levees Based On Case Histories, Vlad Perlea, Khaled Chowdhury, Mary Perlea, George Hu 2013 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento, CA

Selection Of Most Appropriate Procedures For Seismic Evaluation Of Levees Based On Case Histories, Vlad Perlea, Khaled Chowdhury, Mary Perlea, George Hu

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The current methodology for embankment dams evaluation is not appropriate for levees of low heights, which have little effect on the stress state of the foundation soil and, therefore, on its response to the seismic action. In many cases the liquefaction potential of the alluvial deposits is not affected by the levee presence, although is the main factor in levee degradation. Lateral spreading of liquefiable foundation is the main cause of small levee cracking and settlement induced by earthquakes. On the other part, the procedures recommended for evaluation of lateral spreading are not directly applicable to the analysis of levees. …
