Modeling, Reconstruction, And Trend Analysis Of Global Storm Surges Using A Data-Driven Approach, Michael Getachew Tadesse 2022 University of Central Florida

Modeling, Reconstruction, And Trend Analysis Of Global Storm Surges Using A Data-Driven Approach, Michael Getachew Tadesse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Storm surge is the deadliest component of extreme sea levels with one of the highest global death tolls per event. Tide gauges are the primary sources for historical sea-level measurements from which storm surge data is extracted. However, tide gauges are unevenly distributed across the globe, and most records are short in length and have gaps; this creates a challenge to assess long-term trends and perform robust extreme value analysis. This dissertation introduces a data-driven storm surge modeling framework that trains statistical and machine learning models with atmospheric and oceanographic variables. Data-driven models (DDMs) are trained and validated for more …

Stormwater Runoff Response Under Changing Climate And Land Uses Across Gradients Of Inland And Coastal Urban-Natural Basin, Mahmood Khan 2022 West Virginia Univeristy

Stormwater Runoff Response Under Changing Climate And Land Uses Across Gradients Of Inland And Coastal Urban-Natural Basin, Mahmood Khan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Climatic variability has caused significant shifts in the magnitude, frequency and spatiotemporal distribution of precipitation, generating excessive runoff that leads to frequent occurrences of extreme hydrologic events such as the pluvial (rainfall accumulation) and fluvial (riverine) floods. The conversion of natural areas into urban lands is further exacerbating the rainfall accumulation by increasing surface imperviousness that hinders infiltration of water into the soil. This dissertation predicts and characterizes potential shifts in the future annual stormwater runoff
volumes and runoff extremes under the standalone and coupled changes in climate and land use across inland and coastal urban-natural settings. The research was …

Surrogate-Assisted Machine Learning Method For Reliability-Based Continuum Topology Optimization, Thu Van Huynh 2022 Faculty of Engineering

Surrogate-Assisted Machine Learning Method For Reliability-Based Continuum Topology Optimization, Thu Van Huynh

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis proposes an efficient reliability-based topology optimization (RBTO) method that advantageously decouples cross-entropy (CE) method with Gaussian process regression (GPR) model, termed as CE-GPR. The method iteratively performs the bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) with deterministic parameters based on the most probable point (MPP) underpinning limit-state functions iteratively updated by the active learning reliability evaluation process. The GPR model approximates the spectrum of LSFs under random parameters, and hence enables a low-cost CE method for failure probability approximation. The expected feasibility function (EFF) is maximized using the CLPSO to systematically refine the GPR model by adding new (intelligent) learning …
