Extreme weather events are occurring at an increasing ferocity and frequency. Floods are the most comand damaging natural disaster. More than 4,400 occurrences of flood disasters have been reported globally between 1900 and 2016. As a result, around seven million people were killed and millions more were displaced. Climate impacts are expected to intensify weather related flooding events, and sea level rise expected worldwide will increase the risk of coastal disasters. Transportation infrastructure, vital to the economy and society of every country, is especially prone to the inland and coastal floods. Bridge structures are under the constant threat of these …

Characterization Of Human-Induced Vibrations, Benjamin Thomas Davis 2016 University of South Carolina

Characterization Of Human-Induced Vibrations, Benjamin Thomas Davis

Theses and Dissertations

In the US alone, 20% of citizens will be over the age of 65 by the year 2030, and the largest challenge facing this growing demographic is not a new disease but a simple motion - the fall. These events are the premier cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries. In fact, a fall is so common that every 17 seconds an older adult is treated for fall-related injuries, and every 30 minutes, an older adult dies from fall complications. Research has shown a positive outcome of a fall event is largely dependent on the immediate response (<30 minutes) and rescue of the person.

This work explores …

Deposits Emplaced In Upper Regime, Ricardo Rafael Hernández Moreira 2016 University of South Carolina

Deposits Emplaced In Upper Regime, Ricardo Rafael Hernández Moreira

Theses and Dissertations

Relatively common to the submarine setting are depositional sequences that begin with a lower erosional boundary, followed in ascending order by a either a graded or an inherently massive basal unit, a relatively coarse parallel laminated unit, a cross laminated unit, a relatively fine parallel laminated unit, and a capping layer of massive mud. These sequences are present in turbidity current, coastal storm and tsunami deposits, and their study is the key to understanding the physical processes governing sediment transport, erosion and deposition in submarine settings, to the reconstruction of global paleoclimate and paleoflow, to the exploration of hydrocarbon reservoirs …

Use Of Biochar-Ultrafiltration Membrane Processes For Removal Of Humic Acid, Vaibhavi Shankar 2016 University of South Carolina

Use Of Biochar-Ultrafiltration Membrane Processes For Removal Of Humic Acid, Vaibhavi Shankar

Theses and Dissertations

The performance of an ultrafiltration (UF)-biochar process was evaluated in comparison with a UF membrane process for the removal of humic acid (HA). Bench-scale UF experiments were conducted to study the rejection and flux trends under various hydrodynamic, pH, conductivity, and pressure conditions. The resistance-in-series model was used to evaluate the processes and it showed that unlike stirred conditions, where low fouling resistance was observed, comparable trends were obtained for UF-biochar and UF alone for unstirred conditions. Thus, the processes were further evaluated under unstirred conditions. Additionally, total fouling resistance was decreased in the presence of biochar, indicating that HA …

Modeling Embankment Breach Due To Overtopping, Ali Asghari Tabrizi

Theses and Dissertations

Despite numerous embankment failures around the world, in-depth assessments as well as reliable, comprehensive sets of data of such failures are limited. Detailed understanding of the earthen embankment failure process and the dominant parameters affecting the failure are needed to predict and model the breach process precisely. Therefore, a series of laboratory experiments on embankment (i.e., dam and levee) overtopping as well as erodibility measurements using the Submerged Jet test are conducted. Also, to study the influence of different model parameters (e.g., turbulence model, bedload formula), one of the dam embankment experiments is simulated. The main goal of this research …

Shear Behavior Of Reinforced Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer Concrete, Noor S. Yacob 2016 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Shear Behavior Of Reinforced Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer Concrete, Noor S. Yacob

Masters Theses

"The geopolymerisation of aluminosilicate materials such as fly ash has been a radical change in construction material's chemistry and composition, compared to the portland cement-based concrete calcium silicate-hydrate chemistry. The adoption of fly ash in concrete industry is a good use of by-product ashes to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas implicitly. However, in this research, the replacement of portland cement by fly ash is 100%, which makes it a zero-cement concrete with no proprietary chemical additives.

Geopolymer concrete (GC) is a revolutionary synthetic material that combines sustainability and high engineering properties, and it is relatively cost-effective compared to portland …

The Impact Of Traffic Incident Locations On A Metropolitan Evacuation, Karzan Bahaaldin, Ryan N. Fries, Michael R. Williamson, Mashrur Chowdhury

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Modeling emergency evacuations can help engineers, planners, and emergency managers identify the approximate time it would take for evacuees to leave a disaster area. Unfortunately, many evacuation studies do not account for traffic incidents. This study examined the effect of traffic incidents during a no notice emergency evacuation in the eastern St. Louis metropolitan area road network. The roadway network was modeled using traffic micro-simulation software VISSIM, which utilized the expected traffic volumes that were determined by the regional planning agency, and guided by input from the transportation engineers at the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). Because traffic speeds are …

Behavior Of Concrete Beams With Corroded Reinforcement Retrofitted With Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer, Needa Marwan Lingga

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Severe premature deterioration has been reported in a large number of reinforced concrete (RC) structures in corrosive environments. This research project focused on the behavior of beams that contained corroded steel and were retrofitted with CFRP. The steel in RC beams were assumed to be fully corroded, representing the most severe loss in steel cross-section. Unidirectional CFRP sheets were used to strengthen the deteriorated beams. The experimental program included testing five simply supported rectangular cross section concrete beams. All beams were approximately 1/3rd scale models, 4in. x 6in. cross sections, and 6ft. long. In three beams, the oiled steel …

Using Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) And Photogrammetry To Remotely Assess Landslide Events In Near Real-Time, Jordan T. Keeney

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Commercially available unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and photogrammetry software have undergone rapid advancements in recent years. However, the use of UAS and photogrammetry techniques for monitoring surface landform deformation has not been adopted for the most part due to complicated workflows and complex UAS systems. This study demonstrates the ability to monitor landslides in near-real time with commercially available UAS and photogrammetry software using direct georeferencing and co- registration techniques. The results of this research were then assessed to develop an optimal workflow for the rapid assessment of surface deformations with direct georeferenced UAS obtained imagery and photogrammetry software.

Evaluation Of Real World Toll Plazas Using Driving Simulation, Kali Carroll 2016 University of Central Florida

Evaluation Of Real World Toll Plazas Using Driving Simulation, Kali Carroll

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Toll plazas are becoming an essential part of the highway system, especially within the state of Florida. Many crashes reported on highways occur at toll plazas. A primary reason for many vehicle collisions happening at these facilities is the fact that each toll plaza agency has different design, signage and marking criteria. This, in turn, causes driver confusion and possible last minute weaving maneuvers. Even though the varying design of toll plazas is a clear highway safety factor, research in the field is very limited but expanding. This study focuses on one toll plaza, in particular the Dean Mainline Toll …
