Using the psychoanalytic approach, I examine The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, A imitação da rosa by Clarice Lispector, and Cambio de armas by Luisa Valenzuela, particularly noting a common use of defense mechanisms between the stories. Additionally, I propose an expanded use of the psychoanalytic approach that includes the theories of other psychologists (not just Freud) and use it to inform alternative interpretations of the texts.

While it began as a study of the numerous fainting spells in La fuerza de la sangre by Cervantes, his paper focuses on re-exploring Leocadia as a victim of trauma. By combining narratology and psychology, I explore the ways in which Leocadia is a victim of trauma. Narratology not only helps the exploration of Leocadia’s psychology, but also assists in understanding how the ways Leocadia’s story is told affects her psychologically. This combination of approaches leads to the conclusion that Leocadia’s story is a realistic representation of a victimized woman.

Although the boom in historical fiction and historiography about Spain's recent past has found an eager readership, these texts are rarely studied as two halves of the same story. With Genre Fusion: A New Approach to History, Fiction, and Memory in Contemporary Spain, Sara J. Brenneis argues that fiction and nonfiction written by a single author and focused on the same historical moment deserve to be read side-by-side. Surrealism—a literary and artistic movement that has often been criticized for being misogynistic—stemmed from the idea of representing the unconscious mind, unburdened by societal norms. Several female surrealist artists and writers did emerge during the movement, including Remedios Varo, a Catalan surrealist painter. Throughout the early stages of her career, Varo was barely recognized by her male surrealist counterparts. Varo’s gender and background influenced her interpretation of femininity. When comparing Varo’s paintings with those of another famous Catalan surrealist, Salvador Dalí, the difference in the representation of women is striking. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (1891-1961), the ruthless Dominican Republic ruler dominated his island’s politics for over thirty years. In his acclaimed 2000 novel, The Feast of the Goat, Peruvian Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa creates Urania Cabral, a 49-year-old émigrée who at 14 left her nation after becoming Trujillo’s sexual victim. The novel, told from many perspectives, focuses on her return, the dictator’s last day, and the story of the four conspirators waiting to ambush him the night of May 30th 1961. My study analyzes the complex narrative structures of the novel as masterful “rupturing” techniques. Through these the reader pieces …

Estas mujeres son Dorotea, la mujer que le pide justicia a Sancho cuando él gobierna su ínsula, y unas mozas del pueblo donde vive Teresa Panza que son llevadas por unos soldados. En tres de estos episodios las mujeres se resisten a la violación sexual y en un episodio las mujeres son violadas. The present thesis carries out a comparative analysis of the episode maese Pedro, included in the second part of Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote (1615), and Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author (1921) in order to explore the resonance of Cervantes in Pirandello’s play. Particular attention is paid to the dramatic techniques developed by Cervantes in his narrative and their reflection in the work of the Italian playwright and Nobel laureate. Tradicionalmente, el estudio del microrrelato se ha centrado en la discusión de aspectos tales como su caracterización, evolución histórica y estatus genérico. Este trabajo parte de la premisa de que son necesarios nuevos enfoques y por ello indaga en algunas cuestiones axiológicas y éticas en torno al microrrelato. Teniendo como punto de partida el concepto del “saber vivir”, según lo propone Ottmar Ette, se plantea la existencia de un microrrelato del saber vivir normativo-descriptivo que difiere de la correlación que Ette establece entre microficción y “saber vivir”. En mi comunicación se analiza la incorporación de elementos de dos clásicos del cine negro, Vértigo y Extraños en un tren, de Alfred Hitchcock, en la novela contemporánea Queda la noche, de Soledad Puértolas. Mediante una serie de guiños al lector, la autora pone a su alcance un código reconocible que le permite ascender al plano de la creación del texto.
