De Sedentários E Nómadas: A Representação Do Outro Na Moderna Literatura De Viagens Portuguesa / Of Sedentaries And Nomads: The Representation Of The Other In Modern Portuguese Travel Narratives, Francisco Cota Fagundes

Francisco Cota Fagundes

Utilizar-se-ão dois conceitos de longo alcance extraídos dum trabalho teórico enquadrável na órbita do pós-colonialismo, The Ethics of Travel: From Marco Polo to Kafka (1996), de Syed Mansurul Islam: o modo …

Un Pie Aquí Y Otro Allá: Translation, Globalization, And Hybridization In The New World (B)Order, Jorge Jimenez-Bellver

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

This thesis explores the role of translation in the production and manipulation of identities in the contemporary Americas as exemplified in the work of Guillermo Gómez-Peña. Underscoring the instrumentality of borders vis-à-vis dominant constructions of identity and in connection with questions of language, race, and citizenship, I argue that translation not only functions as an agent of hegemonic superiority and oppression, but also as a locus of plurivocity and hybridization. Drawing from the concepts “continuous variation” (Deleuze and Guattari [1987] 2004), “coloniality of power” (Mignolo 2000), and “hybridization” (García-Canclini 1995), I discuss the connection of translation with three main topics: …

This article analyzes the representation of coffee plantation societies in the novel La Charca (1894) by Manuel Zeno Gandía (1855-1930). This literary text is a Puerto Rican classic and is one of the four novels included in Las Crónicas de un Mundo Enfermo (Chronicles of a Sick World). The author examines the political and economic structures developed in Puerto Rico during the nineteenth century, as portrayed in the novel. Carrasquillo Hernández pays close attention to the relations between social classes, the coffee oligarchy’s struggle, and the subjugation of workers by the hacendados (landowners) in order to promote and …

The Transformation Of La Prueba De Los Ingenios Into Labyrinth Of Desire: Adapting Lope De Vega For A Contemporary American Audience, DeLys Ostlund 2010 Portland State University

The Transformation Of La Prueba De Los Ingenios Into Labyrinth Of Desire: Adapting Lope De Vega For A Contemporary American Audience, Delys Ostlund

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Women’s equality, cross dressing, homoerotic desire—all the makings of a twenty-firstcentury comedy—were the focus of a seventeenth century play by Lope de Vega, La prueba de los ingenios (1612?-1613?). In the last two decades, interest in this work has increased considerably. Evidence of the rising popularity of the play is an English-language adaptation by Caridad Svich, which she titled The Labyrinth of Desire. The professional production at Miracle Theatre is the focus of this study. After a brief discussion of the homoerotic theme of the work and general issues of the translation and/or adaptation of the Comedia, I will then …

Representación De La Violencia En La Novela Del Narcotráfico Y El Cine Colombiano Contemporáneo, Claudia Ospina 2010 University of Kentucky

Representación De La Violencia En La Novela Del Narcotráfico Y El Cine Colombiano Contemporáneo, Claudia Ospina

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes the representation of violence in Colombian novels and films from the last two decades of the XX century. Aided by current theories of violence and representation on the one hand, and an interdisciplinary methodology that analyses the phenomenon of the violence of drug trafficking from different perspectives on the other, my analysis examines the challenges and limits of literary and cinematic representation as it grapples with the extreme realities of life in Colombia’s major cities. The central body of my thesis focuses on three novels and two films, selected for the marked differences that inform their generic …

Moroccan Women And Immigration In Spanish Narrative And Film (1995-2008), Sandra Stickle Martín 2010 University of Kentucky

Moroccan Women And Immigration In Spanish Narrative And Film (1995-2008), Sandra Stickle Martín

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Spanish migration narratives and films present a series of conflicting forces: the assumptions of entitlement of both Western and Oriental patriarchal authority, the claims to autonomy and self determination by guardians of women’s rights, the confrontations between advocates of exclusion and hospitality in the host society, and the endeavor of immigrant communities to maintain traditions while they integrate into Spanish society. Taking into consideration current theories of space, mobility, feminism, and assimilation, I center my analysis on four significant moments of migration: the inundation of Western media in other countries that inspires individuals to find alternatives to poverty and oppression; …

Un Film Sentimental Para Tus Ojos: El Cinematógrafo En La Poesía Ultraísta De Lucía Sánchez Saornil, Vera Ruth Jones 2010 University of Montana

Un Film Sentimental Para Tus Ojos: El Cinematógrafo En La Poesía Ultraísta De Lucía Sánchez Saornil, Vera Ruth Jones

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Lucía Sánchez Saornil was the only woman poet who participated in Ultraism, a Spanish Avant-Garde movement of the 1920s that implemented constant thematic and formal experimentation in search of a new language capable of representing modernity and technology. This Spanish-language paper focuses on the impact of cinematography on the Ultraist poetry of Sánchez Saornil. By analyzing two of her poems, "Cines" (1921) and "Domingo" (date unknown), I explain how she utilizes cinematography to 1) to express her experience of modernity and 2) to articulate her relationship with her poetry and the reader. The analysis of these texts and the role …

CMC Senior Theses

My thesis is a creative expression in poetry about my study abroad experience in Chile. During my time in Chile I traveled all over the country and tried to experience as much of the culture as possible. These poems speak of different parts of the country that I visited and different cultural aspects to which I was exposed. The work also includes photos from my travels to accompany several of my poems. This thesis was written with the hope that others might be able to better understand my semester in Chile.

Pas De Deux: La Mutua Lectura De Octavio Paz Y Robert Motherwell, Aurora Camacho De Schmidt 2010 Swarthmore College

Pas De Deux: La Mutua Lectura De Octavio Paz Y Robert Motherwell, Aurora Camacho De Schmidt

Gloria E. Anzaldúa’S Decolonizing Ritual De Conocimiento, Sarah S. Ohmer 2010 CUNY Lehman College

Gloria E. Anzaldúa’S Decolonizing Ritual De Conocimiento, Sarah S. Ohmer

Publications and Research

Gloria E. Anzaldúa’s work makes up one of the many Chican@ works that contribute another history, a history repressed by the national discourses on both sides of the border. Influenced by antecedents of U.S. Hispanic Literature who superposed “official” history with another history, Chicano activists had already enacted a retrieval of pre-conquest histories to revive their people’s historical consciousness. As Saldívar-Hull states in “Mestiza Consciousness and Politics: Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/ La frontera,” the publication of Borderlands/ La Frontera distinguished itself from the Chicano movement’s as it unveiled the curtain that hid the Aztec goddesses and kept aspects of pre-conquest history …

Heroines, Hierarchies, And Space: The Fiction Of Cecilia Absatz, Naomi Lindstrom

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This examination of the fiction of Cecilia Absatz (Argentina, 1943), covers three novels: Féiguele (1976), the 1982 Té con canela ‘Tea with cinnamon’ and the 1985 Los años pares ‘The Even-Numbered Years.’ The continuities between the three texts, and especially the similarity of their female protagonists, who age from adolescence to the threshold of middle age, allow these novels to be read as a series. The primary focus of this study is the maturation of the protagonists as they struggle for autonomy while navigating different types of space. These include space that is marked by gender; identified as Jewish; and …
