La Ciudad De La Mujer: Solidaridad Y Resistencia En El Salón De Belleza, Radost A. Rangelova 2013 Gettysburg College

La Ciudad De La Mujer: Solidaridad Y Resistencia En El Salón De Belleza, Radost A. Rangelova

Spanish Faculty Publications

The paper explores the relationship between gender, sexuality, and the construction of the space of the city in Puerto Rican short stories set in beauty salons. I argue that, through the relationships that develop between women in the beauty salon, and through the interactions between the beauty salon and other city spaces like the street, the strip club, the church and the family house. The protagonists of stories like “Milagros, call Mercurio” and “Pilar, tus rizos” politicize the space of the beauty salon, both gendering and queering it. In this way, they challenge some of the spatial tropes associated with …

“Há Um Mundo Que Se Quebra Quando Eu (Não) Falo": Women's Speech And The Power Of Silence In Teolinda Gersão’S O Silêncio, Robert Marcus Jeffery 2013 Brigham Young University - Provo

“Há Um Mundo Que Se Quebra Quando Eu (Não) Falo": Women's Speech And The Power Of Silence In Teolinda Gersão’S O Silêncio, Robert Marcus Jeffery

Theses and Dissertations

Teolinda Gersão's debut novel, O silêncio, addresses two issues which several prominent feminist writers and critics have discussed: women's search for identity, and the difficulty women encounter when expressing themselves in a man's world. To this second point, this discussion has been varied but comes to a consensus around the need for women to vocalize as a means of asserting themselves. However, the approach that O silêncio brings to this matter is completely the opposite, revealing instead how silence-a form of controlled non-speech-can be more empowering than words. The novel comes to this conclusion as the protagonist Lídia-a headstrong young …

Voicing The Violence Of Favelas, Berkeley A. Kershisnik 2013 Brigham Young University - Provo

Voicing The Violence Of Favelas, Berkeley A. Kershisnik

Theses and Dissertations

This project analyzes three examples of testimonial literature written by favela residents in Brazil to demonstrate the extent to which these accounts contest or confirm the popular news media's violent representation of favelas and their inhabitants. The literary works Quatrocentos contra um: Uma história do Comando Vermelho (1991) by William da Silva Lima and Capão pecado (2000) by Ferréz and the documentary Notícias de uma guerra particular (1999) present an insider's perspective of the violence that takes place in the favela and thus can reveal the factors that contribute to it. Through these explanations, readers and viewers become aware of …

Pedagogía De Hablantes De Herencia: Implicaciones Para El Entrenamiento De Instructores Al Nivel Universitario, Lina M. Reznicek-Parrado

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study researches the differences in pedagogical needs between learners of Spanish as a Foreign Language (FL learners) and learners of Spanish as a Heritage Language (HL learners) at the university level. By using the UNL Modern Languages and Literatures Department as an illustrative case and based on an analysis of the Heritage Language student profile in the context of the United States, this study seeks to explore arguments in favor of providing training for university-level instructors of Spanish that responds to the specific pedagogical needs of Heritage Language Learners.

The relevancy of this study is not only based on …

“My Life With My Cell Phone”: Creating A Magical Realist Story, Dan Gleason 2013 Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy

“My Life With My Cell Phone”: Creating A Magical Realist Story, Dan Gleason

The Short Story

In this lesson students are introduced to the basic elements of magical realism, a genre that combines fantastical events with the mundane normalcy of life. Students examine Octavio Paz’s short story “My Life with the Wave” as an example of the genre. In the story, the narrator travels to the ocean and falls in love with a wave, whom he bottles and takes home with him; the two go on to both cherish each other and fight terribly. After discussing the story, students create, in groups, plot sketches for their own adaptations. Students might imagine relationships with cell phones, the …

Magical Realism As A Means Of Expressing Cultural Disjunction In Alejo Carpentier's 'El Reino De Este Mundo', Ryan Saul Cunningham 2013 Portland State University

Magical Realism As A Means Of Expressing Cultural Disjunction In Alejo Carpentier's 'El Reino De Este Mundo', Ryan Saul Cunningham

Student Research Symposium

Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier's 1949 novel El reino de este mundo is considered to be a key work in the development of the magical realist narrative idiom. The narrative includes instances of the fantastic -- including ghosts and animal metamorphoses -- that the novel's Afro-Caribbean characters accept as factual. In keeping with his suggestions that "the entire history of America [is] a chronicle of the marvelous real," Carpentier supposes that these elements elucidate an "authentic" New World mode of perception. However, the novel's narrative structure belies the author's objective. The concurrent presentation of both non-Western/magical and Western/disenchanted cultural paradigms prevents …

Augusto Boal No Brasil E Suas Marcas Na Contemporaneidade, Alai Garcia Diniz

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Guerrilla warfare is an ancient style of armed conflict that continues to be practiced throughout the world to the present day (Guevara, "A Method" 266, Tzu 168, Taber 149-150), and many countries and peoples have either taken part in guerrilla warfare or have sought to counteract irregular war with counterinsurgency methods, for example the United States (Anderson, Guerrillas xi ; West xiii; Guevara, G. Warfare 18; O'Neill vii-xi). 1 Guerrilla warfare heavily impacts every aspect of society, ranging from the family unit to foreign policy decision-making.
