Anglicisms In Buenos Aires Spanish, C. Cecilia Tocaimaza-Hatch, Dr. Robert Smead 2013 Brigham Young University

Anglicisms In Buenos Aires Spanish, C. Cecilia Tocaimaza-Hatch, Dr. Robert Smead

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina, has distinguished itself from the rest of the Argentine cities by being the site of foreign influences throughout its history as an immigrants’ city. In particular, the presence of an English influence in Buenos Aires is well established, but has been historically a strictly British English influence due to immigration from Great Britain and subsequent economic and political involvement taking place in the 19th century. For that reason, anglicisms in Argentine Spanish have in the past been mostly remnants of British influence.

The Sacred Life Of Don Quixote, Jonathan William Wade, Dr. Dale Pratt 2013 Brigham Young University

The Sacred Life Of Don Quixote, Jonathan William Wade, Dr. Dale Pratt

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Nearly four hundred years after the publication of the first part, I assumed the daunting task of writing about Don Quixote de la Mancha. With literally thousands of publications related to Cervantes’s masterpiece, I knew that writing an honors thesis about Don Quixote would be challenging. However, I felt that I had something valuable to contribute to this eternal literary discussion. When I first read the novel the quixotic spirit fascinated me. There was something about Don Quixote’s commitment to knight errantry that resonated with my own commitments in life. Beyond the obvious madness of our knight, there was an …

Beginners Welsh Language Program, Emily Stout, Dr. Ronald Dennis 2013 Brigham Young University

Beginners Welsh Language Program, Emily Stout, Dr. Ronald Dennis

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my project was to help create a website which could aid people in learning the Welsh language. Language resources for Welsh are difficult to find in most places, and generally restricted to a book and tape set. These sets have some positive effect, but learning the language would be facilitated by the use of videos. My initial role in the project was to videotape fluent Welsh speakers, mostly native speakers, speaking in Welsh. In order to do this, I traveled to Wales and enrolled in an eight-week intensive Welsh course in Lampeter, in South Wales. This was …

Paraguayan Bilingualism: A Case Study Of Phonological Adaptation, Curtis W. Snyder, Dr. Willis Fails 2013 Brigham Young University

Paraguayan Bilingualism: A Case Study Of Phonological Adaptation, Curtis W. Snyder, Dr. Willis Fails

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With the Paraguayan constitution of 1992, Guaraní gained a particularly interesting status as it became recognized by the government as the “national” language of Paraguay with Spanish being the “official” language. Although not all people in Paraguay speak Guaraní, the overwhelming majority do. Figure one illustrates the percentages of people that belong to the different linguistic communities of Paraguay. If we add the Bilingual Spanish and the Monolingual Guaraní sections we see that 92% of Paraguayans can speak Guaraní, either as a native or second language. The percentage of the total population included in this group is astonishing and definitely …

A Translation Of El Muerto Dissimulado By Angela De Azevedo, Jessie L. Christensen, Dr. Valerie Hegstrom 2013 Brigham Young University

A Translation Of El Muerto Dissimulado By Angela De Azevedo, Jessie L. Christensen, Dr. Valerie Hegstrom

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Spain have come to be known as the “Golden Age”, due to the incredible flowering of art and literature that took place during that time. Among the greatest accomplishments of the era was prolific growth in both the writing and performance of plays. The works of such playwrights as Calderón de la Barca, Tirso de Molina, and Lope de Vega are already well-known and have been translated into English numerous times. However, many other authors have been forgotten during the last three hundred years. One such author is Angela de Azevedo, a woman whose …

The Taíno Influence On Modern Dominican Art, Brittany H. Hyatt, Dr. Douglas J. Weatherford 2013 Brigham Young University

The Taíno Influence On Modern Dominican Art, Brittany H. Hyatt, Dr. Douglas J. Weatherford

Journal of Undergraduate Research

At the time of the arrival of Columbus in 1492, the indigenous Taíno civilization pervaded the island of Hispaniola (now home to Haiti and the Dominican Republic). However, as a result of disease and persecution, the Taíno population would all but disappear within fifty years. The annihilation was so complete, in fact, that the conquering Spaniards had to import African slaves to compensate for the loss of labor. Despite the limited influence of the Taínos in the modern Dominican’s life and ancestry, aspects of this once flourishing culture continue to appear in Dominican art.

Language Policy And Language Planning In Post-Colonial Mozambique, James Dewey, Dr. Willis C. Fails 2013 Brigham Young University

Language Policy And Language Planning In Post-Colonial Mozambique, James Dewey, Dr. Willis C. Fails

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Mozambique, located on the southeast African coast, gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. Since that time, the Mozambican government has faced numerous problems such as a sixteen-year civil war, famines, flooding, and extreme poverty. In addition, the government faces unique linguistic challenges including how to unite and educate a nation that speaks at least twenty different African languages (Firmino 336). Through my research I wanted to gain a more complete understanding of Mozambique’s socio-linguistic history since its independence, with a special focus on the country’s official laws regarding language.

Garcia Da Orta’S Colloquies On The Simples And Drugs Of India, Nicholas Hundley, Dr. Christopher Lund 2013 Brigham Young University

Garcia Da Orta’S Colloquies On The Simples And Drugs Of India, Nicholas Hundley, Dr. Christopher Lund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1562, the Portuguese physician Garcia da Orta published a book called Colloquies on the simples and drugs and medicinal things of India. Having lived in Goa many years and observed the medicinal uses of various plants and healing strategies of the Indians and Arabs, as well as having heard of healing strategies in more distant lands such as China and Java, Orta felt a special need to share his knowledge with the Western world. Written as an interview of the physician conducted by an imaginary character, Orta’s work sets forth the names, occurrences, and uses of many of the …

The Marvelous American Reality: Making A Case For Carpentier’S Magical Realism In Latin American Music, Erika Edwards, Dr. Arden Hopkin, Dr. George Handley 2013 Brigham Young University

The Marvelous American Reality: Making A Case For Carpentier’S Magical Realism In Latin American Music, Erika Edwards, Dr. Arden Hopkin, Dr. George Handley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1949 the Nobel Prize-winning Cuban novelist and musicologist, Alejo Carpentier, published his essay on lo real maravilloso Americano, an aggressively American discussion of the theory now known as magical realism. Carpentier refers to the German art critic Franz Roh (who initially coined the term in reference to post-expressionist painting in 1925), but diverges and defends magical realism as a uniquely Latin American phenomenon. While the world has latched onto Magical Realism as a critical literary theory, it is undeniably the Latin American authors and artists who have embraced, embodied and defined the practice of it. Carpentier asserts that the …

Buenos Aires Dreaming: Chronopolitics, Memory And Dystopia In La Sonámbula, Mariano Paz 2013 University of Limerick

Buenos Aires Dreaming: Chronopolitics, Memory And Dystopia In La Sonámbula, Mariano Paz

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía

The Argentine film La Sonámbula (dir. Fernando Spiner, 1998) is one of the most renowned examples of local science fiction cinema. The film portrays a post-apocalyptic, totalitarian Argentina in the year 2010 (the near future at the time of the film’s release). Since this dystopian scenario never materialized, it might be assumed the concerns and anxieties about Argentine politics that the film conveys might have been exaggerated or unfounded. Drawing on the concept of chronopolitcs, as defined by Paul Virilio, and on the theoretical framework proposed by Paul Ricoeur related to the study of memory and forgetting, this paper discusses …

Hibridaciones Genéticas Y Genéricas: La Representación Diegética De La Historia En Orescu (1999-2001) De Gabriel Trujillo Muñoz, Anaïs Fabriol 2013 Université de Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle

Hibridaciones Genéticas Y Genéricas: La Representación Diegética De La Historia En Orescu (1999-2001) De Gabriel Trujillo Muñoz, Anaïs Fabriol

Alambique.

¿Quién Le Teme A C. P. Snow En La Crítica De Ciencia Ficción Latinoamericana? El Enigma Del Género En El Laberinto De Una Conspiración Hermética., Roberto M. Lepori

Alambique.

Yo, Ciborg: El Andamiaje Político De La Subjetividad Y De La Otredad En La Ciencia- Ficción Argentina, Silvia Gabriela Kurlat Ares 2013 Independent Scholar

Yo, Ciborg: El Andamiaje Político De La Subjetividad Y De La Otredad En La Ciencia- Ficción Argentina, Silvia Gabriela Kurlat Ares

Alambique.

Seven Days: A Latin American Historical Novel, David Wiseman, Dr. Douglas J. Weatherford 2013 Brigham Young University

Seven Days: A Latin American Historical Novel, David Wiseman, Dr. Douglas J. Weatherford

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As often is the case in creative writing, the direction of this project deviated slightly from its initial aims. The results, however, surpass in significance the expected outcome of the project’s early development. In order to insure proposed results, this project required extensive research and preparation prior to its production. As stated in its original proposal, under the direction of Dr. Sally Taylor I completed initial draft work on the novel Seven Days while enrolled in English 419R (Creative Writing Project). During the outlining and drafting processes I researched theories regarding creative writing itself, and likewise read several novels paralleling …

The Fate Of Condemned 18th Century Portuguese Loanwords, Aaron Eggleston, Dr. Christopher Lund 2013 Brigham Young University

The Fate Of Condemned 18th Century Portuguese Loanwords, Aaron Eggleston, Dr. Christopher Lund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1760 a book was published in Lisbon, Portugal entitled Infermidades da lingua, e arte que a ensina a emmudecer para melhorar (Sicknesses of the tongue, and the art that teaches it to be silent for improvement), in which the use of certain words and phrases in the Portuguese language was strongly denounced. In the title of the work in question and throughout the text, the author describes his vast inventory of words and other expressions as “sicknesses” to the Portuguese language that need to be removed. The author’s prescriptive linguistic view is quite interesting and has been in demand …

Borges And The Basques: Notes On Reading An Invisible Literature, David Laraway 2013 Brigham Young University

Borges And The Basques: Notes On Reading An Invisible Literature, David Laraway

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

Critics and readers sometimes unnecessarily limit the scope of what is to be counted as “Basque literature” to texts originally composed in Euskera. In the present study I argue for a hermeneutics of Basque literature that does not seek to identify Basque literature by means of the language of composition, theme, or any particular biographical information about the author. Taking the work of Jorge Luis Borges as a touchstone—and , in particular, his canonical short story, “Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote”—I sketch a strategy for reading Basque literature from a minimalist perspective that takes the identity of a …

Motivos Y Estrategias En El Teatro De Angélica Liddell, Jesús Eguía Armenteros 2013 Connecticut College

Motivos Y Estrategias En El Teatro De Angélica Liddell, Jesús Eguía Armenteros

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

This piece analyzes the works of Angelica Liddell from the perspective of the Theory of Motives and Strategies. The playwright’s works are understood to be a reaction to environmental tension, the motive of …
