Service-Learning Research For Development: An Option For The Poor In Practice Through Social Analysis And Community Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Kate L. Nolt

A group of faculty, staff and students from Creighton University conducted a research project using a strengths-based approach to create a community health needs assessment (CNHA) in the fall of 2017. The instruments, including a survey to determine health status, a focus group questionnaire, an environmental scan and an individual interview instrument, were developed to help shift the paradigm from which many international medical missions are conducted with Creighton’s community partner in the Dominican Republic, the Centro de Educación para la Salud Integral (CESI). Efforts to understand the doctrine of repentance in the Book of Mormon have long been hampered by linguistic considerations—and especially the traditional translation provided in the King James Version of the Bible. Twentieth century studies provide a needed correction to this situation and open a wealth of potential new understandings of Book of Mormon discourse on repentance. Further, the discovery that the Book of Mormon uses the common biblical figure of speech of hendiadys repeatedly to expand and enrich the concept of repentance beyond biblical usage helps readers appreciate the ways in which repentance can be seen as the most …

The concept of covenantal faithfulness toward Yahweh that Old Testament scholars have recognized and defined over the last century turns out to be a far better account of the Book of Mormon understanding of faith in the Lord, in Jesus Christ, than are any of the competing concepts of faith that have grown out of the Christian tradition over the last two millennia. For the Nephite prophets, faith was an active concept, better understood as faithfulness—as diligent obedience to the commandments the Lord has given to those who have accepted the gospel covenant through repentance and baptism. Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds

In this essay I have tried to provide a broad survey of the concept of covenant for Latter-day Saint students of the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I began with a sketch of the history of covenant theology in the Christian tradition showing how the early New Testament idea of a baptismal covenant was soon replaced by the Christian institution of sacraments. Although the covenant idea played little role in the historical developments of Christian theology, it did resurge in the Reformation, but without widespread theological impact.

This article revisits Latin American Liberation Theology’s «option for the poor» in light of Marcella Althaus-Reid’s theological contribution. Queer Theory and Queer Theologies have helped to critique the idealised «poor» and «option for the poor» in much of Latin American Liberation Theology. This article takes on board those critiques, but in turn it asks if Queer Theory and Queer Theologies more widely ought to include and «option for the poor» in their own methodologies.

This article focuses on the contributions and challenges that queer theology offers to the theological world. However, it also addresses particular theological-pastoral reflection beyond the specificity of queer theologies. The article presents three aspects of queer theologies that I recognize as essential to all theological reflection. The second section develops in what sense queer theologies constitute a contribution to the «liberation of theology.» The last section points out pastoral challenges by focusing on rethinking the concept of «inclusion» as a challenge of what means to «queer» theology.

This article seeks to denounce the heteronormative model’s inconsistencies and inequalities from the perspective of queer theologies. Using the tools proposed by queer theory, these theologies seek to promote liberation so that people of sexual and gender diversity who profess a faith can be-and-stay-in-the-world in a visible and respected way. Queer theologies challenge normative structures and discourses that seek to close identities in their multiple aspects within the religious field. Thus, they help us deconstruct heteropatriarchal normative theology until that deconstruction also allows us to speak of a queer God.

An Indecent Pedagogy: Marcella Althaus-Reid Leading Theology Out Of The Closet Through Indecent Theology, Elizabeth Ingenthron

Through Indecent Theology, Marcella Althaus-Reid contributed to liberation through education or pedagogy as a «leading out.» Because of the way that Althaus-Reid leads us out of the closet of oppressive social and theological frameworks, this article argues that her work is simultaneously theological and pedagogical. Paulo Freire’s notions on pedagogy provide an apt theoretical framework for the analysis. Reading Althaus-Reid’s Indecent Theology through Freire’s work provides a re-contextualized understanding of his pedagogical theory. Thus, allowing the liberatory theological and pedagogical praxis of Indecent Theology to emerge. Weaponization Of The Border, Neomi De Anda

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In response to deadly shootings having taken place near the author's hometown, this paper addresses the impact of weaponization within the culture of the United States as it shows itself in an epidemic of gun violence. Attentive to Christian thinking on violence, this paper pushes for renewed conversation on weaponization, and it challenges scholars to work toward concrete actions to deconstruct the tools of weaponization.

Since this paper was first presented, the author has provided multiple appendices that chart the instances of gun violence between 2019 and 2024 within schools and for mass shootings.
