Remnant Motif In Amos, Micah And Zephaniah, 2011 Bethel University
Remnant Motif In Amos, Micah And Zephaniah, Alison Lo
Seminary Faculty Publications
‘Remnant’ is one of the significant motifs in the Minor Prophets. This essay will examine the remnant motif in Amos, Micah and Zephaniah, seeking to find out the commonality of this concept between these three pre-exilic books. In order to facilitate this study, finding the remnant terminology helps us locate the remnant passages. In Amos the term תיראשׁ is used with reference to Israel, i.e. the ‘remnant of Joseph’ (Amos 5.15). It also refers to other peoples, like the remnant of the Philistines (Amos 1.8) and Edomites (Amos 9.12). The term תיראשׁ is used five times in Micah (Mic. 2.12; …
Purpose Found: Conditions Of Meaningful Existence, Selfhood And The Role Of The Other In John Milton's Paradise Lost, 2011 Colby College
Purpose Found: Conditions Of Meaningful Existence, Selfhood And The Role Of The Other In John Milton's Paradise Lost, Anna Sawch
Honors Theses
While Biblical interpretations of Genesis posit God as omnipotent creator and teacher, in John Milton's Paradise Lost it is Adam and Eve‟s relationship and interactions with one another that make them who they are and mold them into who they become. The Adam and Eve of Paradise Lost are true characters, and dynamic ones at that. Rather than serve an allegory or work to create a lofty moral lesson, Adam and Eve grow through speech, desire, and language, interfacing with one another in the spirit of true human curiosity and self-discovery. I first explored this observation that Milton's Adam and …
The Gospel Of Matthew: The Temple Cleansing In 21:12-17, 2011 College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University
The Gospel Of Matthew: The Temple Cleansing In 21:12-17, Kasey Devine
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
In this paper, the cleansing of theTempleis described as a story of both judgment and challenge. Matthew illustrates Jesus to his post-Temple community as the Jewish continuation of Moses and the Law, the fiery prophet critiquing the economic system set up by the chief priests and scribes, and God himself who brings judgment to his people. The story challenged Matthew’s community and challenges the modern reader to end oppression, attend to the marginalized, and accept Jesus as the newTemple– the continuation of Judaism. This story can be seen in terms of liturgy and Baptism in the Church, and confronts our …
The "Ladder" Of The Lord's Plagues, 2011 College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University
The "Ladder" Of The Lord's Plagues, Kasey Devine
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper discusses the first chapters of the book of Exodus, in which God identifies himself to Moses and announces God’s intentions to “smiteEgyptby doing all kinds of wondrous deeds there.” With each sign, another aspect of God’s control and supremacy is showcased – and each is more powerful than the last. In this way, God’s signs become much like climbing the rungs of a ladder – the further along you get, the more dangerous your position becomes. The text is approached as a narrative drama, with the final form taking precedence over source or historical criticism. Details point to …

Given the complexity of this sacred text and the intensity with which Protestants have sought to glean its truths from it, it is not surprising that Luther’s “dangerous idea” yielded countless splits, schisms, and sects. Whereas once there was the Church, Protestants dedication to reading the Scripture for themselves has brought an endless variety of theologies, practices, and fellowships with no end in sight. While every one of these groups claims (whether explicitly or implicitly) that they alone have the true word of God, none has been able to arrest the flow of interpretations. With everyone free to read the …

Paul’s relationship with the church at Corinth provides a detailed leadership case study. • Accountability & Integrity
• Mission-Centeredness

• Accurate Self-Concept
• Weakness & Adversity
• Assertiveness & Gentleness

Scripture And The Church: A Precis For An Alternative Analogy, 2011 Seattle Pacific University
Scripture And The Church: A Precis For An Alternative Analogy, Daniel Castelo
SPU Works
This article surveys the popular analogy of thinking of Scripture as “incarnational,” that it is both “human” and “divine,” and shows how an alternative model, one framed in terms of the church’s traditional marks of oneness, holiness, catholicity, and apostolicity, can be more theologically coherent in terms of Scripture’s nature or ontology. Furthermore, we believe that a shift in analogies can render an approach to Scripture that is more attentive to Scripture’s role as a means of grace employed by the triune God to bring about repair and healing among its faithful and God-seeking readers.

Seeking For The Lost: A Papyrological Search For Luke Fifteen's Lost Economics, Erik Yingling
Student Works
This paper draws upon Egyptian documentary papyri in order to show more fully the quantitative purchasing power of items of economic significance in Luke 15. Specifically, the stories of the lost drachma, lost sheep, and prodigal son each mention economic items which—when compared with the papyrological data—can more fully elucidate areas of economic import which have not been looked at before. In doing so, the article builds upon, and supports, the framework of Roman economic "middling groups" as posited by Longenecker (2009). Furthermore, a close look at Luke 15 when compared with the Egyptian papyrological data suggests the possibility of …
