This study will discuss Native American discrimination by the U.S. government while focusing on the education system and policies the Native Americans suffered through. A push to remove the sovereignty of Native Nations through assimilation by the U.S. government has led to arguments that Native Americans have been the recipients of cultural suppression.

In 1884, the Genoa Industrial Indian School became part of the government's off-reservation Indian boarding school system. The students who attended Genoa throughout the course of her fifty years came from many different tribes and brought with them a variety of backgrounds. Each student experienced Genoa in his or her own way. Individual experiences were influenced by their time of arrival; the policies and procedures in place in Washington and locally, as well as the administration in charge. Archeological excavations conducted in advance of a retail development in the Town of Catskill, Greene County, New York revealed three precontact archeological sites occupying a distinct ecological setting connected to a wetland environment. The sites include a large, single-component site, Site CC3, accompanied by two smaller single-component sites, Sites CC1 and CC2.

As places to engage with changing and complex ideas, institutions of higher education offer a logical site for bringing Indigenous ways of knowing together with environmental studies and science. However, profound differences between Indigenous and Western knowledges, as well as ongoing colonialism, cultural biases of science, and the nature of mainstream academia, have discouraged this endeavor. Recent developments in undergraduate pedagogy now point the way.

The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act has made a big impact on tribal-state relations since it was enacted in 1988 by the federal government. Tribes have started to make campaign contributions to state and federal politicians to help try to mold lawmakers to vote for Tribal interests. My research looks at Minnesota tribes and their campaign contributions to House members during the 2005 election, and whether these lawmakers voted for tribal issues during their term. For control variables I also gathered a variety of information related to legislative districts. What my analysis has shown is that the tribes in Minnesota donate …
