By probing “when and how” an individual was considered a mestizo (a person of mixed heritage) in the early colonial New Kingdom of Grenada (modern-day Columbia), Joanne Rappaport’s Disappearing Mestizo: Configuring Difference in the Colonial New Kingdom of Granada (Duke University Press, 2014) adds to the growing scholarship on racial difference in colonial Spanish America.

How can something as commonplace as going to the doctor influence international politics? In Bolivia, medicine is bound in politics. The political structure of a country both influences the approach to health care, and determines how that approach is most effectively implemented internationally. Building upon a framework of conceptual difference between capitalist and socialist health systems, this paper examines “effective” models of US and Cuban international health care on both a political and individual level. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in a Bolivian hospital, interviews with doctors working internationally, and current literature, I seek to discern what defines “effective” international health …

This article explores the evolution of the May Day Queer Contingent (MDQC) as a part of the annual Los Angeles May Day march. The MDQC is a notable example of the political mobilization led by queer women and transgender activists of color of the LGBTQ community, as it relates to the struggle for immigrant rights. Offering reflections from founders and key organizers, this paper considers the development of the MDQC; its engagement with other groups; intersectionality and queer women of color feminisms as a political project to confront a heteropatriarchal immigration reform movement.

This article argues that the disciplining of noncitizens becomes a constitutive characteristic of neoliberalism. Examining two narratives about bodily deprivation in detention centers, the study pursues the psychic life of statelessness through tragic testimonies that not only point to subjection, induced through techniques of humiliation, but also to the neoliberal contradiction between “inclusion” and practices of regulation. Readings interrogate the problem of normativity in neoliberalism. In particular, the article argues against normative presuppositions about both race and gender, demonstrating how this leads to the denial of medication and death in detention facilities.

This dissertation analyzes six novels by Chilean writers: Marta Brunet's:Humo hacia el sur (1946) and Maria Nadie (1957); Mercedes Valdivieso's La brecha (1961) and La tierra que les di (1963), and Maria Elena Gertner'sIslas en la ciudad (1958) and La Derrota (1964). This study explores the articulations of gender, race, class relations, and identity representation in mid-20th -century Chilean literature. I argue that a number of female writers in mid-twentieth century Chile played an important role in the construction of a national identity as they examined traditional social practices and models, and provided new grounds to portray …

Day laborers occupy an essential position in Denver’s booming construction industry. Day laborers make up a highly flexible, highly effective workforce able to respond to market changes. For day laborers, informal day-labor gathering points provide increased control over working hours and employee-employer relationships when compared to traditional wage labor. Still, recent legislation and policies around irregular migration has forced large numbers of workers who may have benefited from the stability of full-time regular employment into the informal sector. The day laborers’ flexibility also exposes them to employers constantly inventing ways to deny them the wages and benefits they are owed. …
