The Past Is Open To The Future: Lithuanian Folk Pottery 1861 - Present, Anthony E. Stellaccio
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In 2011, following several years of in-country research, I published a book on Lithuanian folk pottery. I enrolled in the Folk Studies master’s program at Western Kentucky University (WKU) in 2014, well after my research and book had been completed. In the present study, I use my newly acquired knowledge of folklore In my previous work to revisit Lithuanian folk pottery.
In my previous work, I had sought to create a picture of “authentic” Lithuanian folk pottery that was confined to the narrow temporal borders of 1861-1918. Here I deconstruct conventional ideas about authenticity, as well as culture and heritage, …

Discoloration Of A Green Pigment In Tintoretto’S Allegorical Figure Of Spring And Analysis Of The Chemical Properties And Stability Of Copper Resinate, Sarah Wells Conner Horn
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
The focus of this thesis is the discoloration of a common historical green pigment, copper resinate. In this research the discoloration was investigated in Jacopo Tintoretto’s painting, Allegorical Figure of Spring, painted c. 1555. This painting is believed to have been painted with copper resinate which has discolored to brown over the centuries. The state of repair of the painting was determined using visual analysis under visible and UV light and the use of copper green pigments was confirmed using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence, including copper resinate based upon supplementary historical evidence. Substantial evidence was found from visual inspection and …

Decorative Turkey Callmakers: Artists Or Craftsmen, Lauren E. Virgo
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the history of the wild turkey call and the role of decorative callmakers in the world of art and craft. Is a turkey callmaker an artist or a craftsman? Are their decorative turkey calls works of art or works of craft? This debate is explored via the decorative turkey calls that have won the Decorative Turkey Call Best of Show portion of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Grand National Callmaking Competition. These winning turkey calls are currently on display at the NWTF’s Winchester Museum in Edgefield, South Carolina.
The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is a non-profit …

What’S In Your Toolbox? Examining Tool Choices At Two Middle And Late Woodland-Period Sites On Florida’S Central Gulf Coast, Lori L. O'Neal
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The examination of the tools that prehistoric people crafted for subsistence and related practices offers distinctive insights into how they lived their lives. Most often, researchers study these practices in isolation, by tool type or by material. However, by using a relational perspective, my research explores the tool assemblage as a whole including bone, stone and shell. This allows me to study the changes in tool industries in relation to one another, something that I could not accomplish by studying only one material or tool type. I use this broader approach to tool manufacture and use for the artifact assemblage …

Social Dynamics And Ceramic Mobility Of Final Bronze Age Ceramics In Corsica (France): Elemental Analysis Using A Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer, Aurelien Tafani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Corsican Bronze Age is characterized by the erection of massive stone towers, the torre, and of stone enclosures, the casteddi. While the role of these structures is still debated, they have generally been interpreted as the sign of a hierarchical society, pervaded by martial values and fragmented into competing antagonistic groups. After several centuries of stability, a sharp demographic decline occurred at the end of the Middle Bronze Age. ca. 1350 and 1200 BC. In contrast, the Final Bronze Age, between 1200 and 950 BC, is a period of continuous expansion, characterized by the appearance of new …

Sondage Autour De L’Exposition Internationale Pour La Palestine De 1978, Nasser Soumi
Artl@s Bulletin

An exhibition of an exceptional scale and scope took place in Beirut in the middle of the civil war and today, its archival and documentary traces have been almost entirely lost. The International Art Exhibition for Palestine opened in the Spring of 1978, comprising some 200 works donated by artists hailing from nearly 30 countries, to be a seed collection for a museum in exile. This is a transcript of a presentation of the transformation of research into an exhibition format and a virtual walkthrough of the show Past Disquiet: Narratives and Ghosts from the International Art Exhibition for Palestine, …

Between Paris And London: Contacts And Exchanges Of South American Artists In Europe (1950-1970), Maria De Fatima Morethy Couto Dr
Artl@s Bulletin
This paper calls attention to a network of artists, dealers, and critics from Europe and South America thanks to whom, from the 1950s to the early 1970s, Paris and London welcomed and fostered a certain form of South American avant-garde art. Accordingly, it discusses the European reception given to five South American artists active in Paris and London —Lygia Clark, Hélio Oiticica, Sérgio Camargo, Jesús Rafael Soto and Julio Le Parc—whose artistic practices were sometimes related to kineticism. It highlights the impact they had on the European art scene, as well as the role of several cultural agents who were …

Art Collectors In Network And Identity Narratives: Contributions To A Cartography Of The Genre Of Types And Costumes In South America, Josefina De La Maza, Juan Ricardo Rey Márquez, Catalina Valdés, Carolina Vanegas Carrasco
Artl@s Bulletin
One of the best-known visual manifestations of nineteenth-century Latin America is costumbrismo, a genre that describes social types and popular subjects. Scholarship has usually understood this genre as an illustration of early Republican times produced by the gaze of European artists, proposing a hierarchical structure in relation to the production and consumption patterns of these images. Following the path opened in the last decade by new studies, this paper contributes to the ongoing debates on costumbrismo, by examining the role played by a South American network of historians and collectors modeling identity narratives throughout the twentieth-century.
