Judy Chicago: Visions For Feminist Art, Francesca DeBiaso 2012 Gettysburg College

Judy Chicago: Visions For Feminist Art, Francesca Debiaso

Student Publications

Controversy, awe, and revelation distinguish Judy Chicago's now 40 year career in the art world. Chicago's large body of work is inseparable from her ideologies pertaining to women's crippling exclusion from male dominated disciplines within art, history, and society overall. Her work is characterized by a desire to establish feminine iconography ("central-core imagery") and create a feminist lexicon applicable to the arts as to validate and celebrate women's experience. Viewing her artwork as a tool for social change and dialogue, Chicago has incorporated collaboration and consciousness-raising into her art making process. Thus, her collaborators gain not only the participation of …

Mass Production For One: Inverting Standards In Design Art Furniture, Lauren L. Gallow 2012 University of California - Santa Barbara

Mass Production For One: Inverting Standards In Design Art Furniture, Lauren L. Gallow

Lauren L. Gallow

“When is a chair not a chair? The answer is probably, ‘When it’s a piece of design art.’” So began a recent article on the burgeoning field within contemporary art known as design art. While it is difficult to summarize the diverse practices of design art practitioners, typically they share an interest in exploring the tools, methods, and forms of the industrial manufacturing system. This project examines several designers who are using the means of industrial production to create limited edition or one-off design art objects. While they often start with familiar, functional forms such as chairs and tables, these …

More Than Words: Rhetorical Devices In American Political Cartoons, Lawrence Ray Bush 2012 University of South Florida

More Than Words: Rhetorical Devices In American Political Cartoons, Lawrence Ray Bush

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that literary theory applied to political cartoons shows that cartoons are reasoned arguments. The rhetorical devices used in the cartoons mimic verbal devices used by essayists. These devices, in turn, make cartoons influential in that they have the power to persuade readers while making them laugh or smile. It also gives examples of literary theorists whose works can be applied to political cartooning, including Frederick Saussure, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Wolfgang Iser. Not only do those theorists' arguments apply to text, they also apply to pictorial representations.

This thesis also discusses changes in the cartoon art form over …

Specialization In Small-Scale Societies: The Organization Of Pottery Production At Kolomoki (9er1), Early County, Georgia, Travis Laforge 2012 University of South Florida

Specialization In Small-Scale Societies: The Organization Of Pottery Production At Kolomoki (9er1), Early County, Georgia, Travis Laforge

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Investigating the organization of production systems can reveal much about a society, in particular how resources and labor were allocated, and the influence that economic, political, social, and ceremonial institutions had on the production process. Interpreting the nature of specialized production is useful for understanding how production was organized. In turn, the degree of standardization exhibited by the goods being produced is used to determine the nature of specialization. While archaeological research regarding specialized production has expanded over time to incorporate a wide range of societies, such research is often focused on complex societies. The research presented here focuses on …

Os Perigosos Sábios Do Sião I, Paulo Ferreira da Cunha 2012 Universidade do Porto

Os Perigosos Sábios Do Sião I, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Media Revolution: Early Prints From The Sheldon Museum Of Art, Gregory Nosan, Alison G. Stewart

Zea E-Books Collection

In the digital age, when videos are streamed and books can be read electronically, it is hard to fathom the revolutionary impact that printed images had when they first appeared in Europe around 1400. Their introduction changed forever the traditional practice of manually crafting images one by one, creating a world in which pictures could be reproduced almost without limit on a new material called paper, expanding the possibilities and audiences for images and texts of all kinds. This publication, which brings to light little-seen masterpieces from the Sheldon Museum of Art’s collection, explores the three major print techniques of …

Renegotiating Identities, Cultures And Histories: Oppositional Looking In Shelley Niro's "This Land Is Mime Land", Jennifer Danielle Mccall 2012 University of South Florida

Renegotiating Identities, Cultures And Histories: Oppositional Looking In Shelley Niro's "This Land Is Mime Land", Jennifer Danielle Mccall

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My master's thesis explores the photographic series "This Land is Mime Land," which Shelley Niro made in 1992. Despite this work's complex form and structure, there are currently no sustained studies of this series alone, or books solely dedicated to Niro's art. Instead, "Mime Land" is often discussed in compilations that address a number of Native artists, Western feminist practices, or multiple works in Niro's oeuvre. My thesis fills this gap, as I closely investigate how "Mime Land" asks the viewer to look at visual culture, histories and Niro herself. Bell hooks's definition of the "oppositional gaze" - meaning a …

Rousseau, A Constituição De Cádis E A Renacença Portuguesa, Paulo Ferreira da Cunha 2012 Universidade do Porto

Rousseau, A Constituição De Cádis E A Renacença Portuguesa, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Programa Mínimo Para A Democracia, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

É sempre salutar discutir a Democracia.

Studying Socioeconomic Trends Through Cemetery Sales Records: A Case Study Of Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, Florida, Victoria Abigail Kennedy Lawrence 2012 University of South Florida

Studying Socioeconomic Trends Through Cemetery Sales Records: A Case Study Of Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, Florida, Victoria Abigail Kennedy Lawrence

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cemeteries are microcosms of society bound together in sacred spaces. As manifestations of social mores, cemeteries allow anthropologists to obtain information on social development and structure. Where noninvasive study is mandated, crucial methods of interpretation include studies of landscape design, floral incorporation, grave marker design and development, and grave mementos. This thesis discusses these and other methods as they are used to infer group mores. It also indicates how information acquired from methods can be adversely affected by outside influences, such as vandalism, weathering, and replotting. This thesis adds to known methods of cemetery research another unbiased, noninvasive tool that …

Teaching With Twitter: A Collaborative Experiment Using Twitter In The Classroom, Brian Vetruba, Makiba Foster, Kristina Kleutghen 2012 Washington University in St Louis

Teaching With Twitter: A Collaborative Experiment Using Twitter In The Classroom, Brian Vetruba, Makiba Foster, Kristina Kleutghen

University Libraries Presentations

In a world where social media are becoming part of our daily existence in a variety of ways, Twitter is making inroads as a method for engaging students. In fact, a recent study published in the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning found a higher rate of student engagement with faculty and course material--as well as better grades—among students who were Twitter users. Kristina, Makiba, and Brian will describe a collaborative experiment in integrating Twitter into two Art History courses in the fall of 2011. They will share lessons learned and engage participants in a discussion of best practices for using …

Clima Anticonstitucional, Paulo Ferreira da Cunha 2012 Universidade do Porto

Clima Anticonstitucional, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Proibição Do Retrocesso E Reserva Do Possível: Princípios Constitucionais Para Tempos De Crise, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Inconstitucionalidade Do Orçamento Do Estado. A Caminho De Uma "Constituição" Flexível Infralegal?, Paulo Ferreira da Cunha 2012 Universidade do Porto

Inconstitucionalidade Do Orçamento Do Estado. A Caminho De Uma "Constituição" Flexível Infralegal?, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
