Nazisploitation And The Problem Of Violence In Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, Jared Welling Cook
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I explore the representation of Nazis and violence in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009), including how the film proposes justification for violence and murder, and how the film participates in cultural fantasies. The film presents an alternate outcome of World War II in which the Allies achieve victory by assassinating Hitler and the High Command of the Third Reich in a movie theater. The Nazis in the film, far from being a complex enemy, are used for their token villain status. Using the Nazis in this way both participates in and reinterprets the Nazisploitation genre. The protagonists, …

Terminology Validation, Uwe Muegge
Uwe Muegge
It is generally accepted that terminology plays a particularly important role in translation and localization of life science products and services. But how do you make sure that linguists use the client’s preferred terminology? If terminology is available before the source text is authored and client-validated terminology is available in all languages before translation, the translation process in general and translation review in particular can be a much less painful and time-consuming process. Participants in this session take away a better understanding of the value of implementing a comprehensive terminology management program as part of a risk management and/or productivity …

Identitat-Anlage Durch Warter Und Aussehen, C. David Robba
Honors Theses
The identity of a person is his most important aspect. It has a big impact on the way someone sees himself, and how other people recognize him. Without a unique identity, a person has no characteristic character. In their lives, everyone creates an identity. However, identity becomes most important when one is a foreigner or visits a foreign country. Because of this, many aspects of society and everyday life could be very different, and if one lacks what he knows, he can find solace in his identity. However, if a person's identity is not certain, they may feel lost afterwards. …

The Mirror Of Laughter: Mediation, Self-Reflection, And Healing In E.T.A. Hoffmann's Princess Brambilla, Alexander M. Schlutz
Publications and Research
E.T.A. Hoffmann’s capriccio Princess Brambilla explores a narrative realm of liminality and metamorphosis that reveals the fundamental instability of our most basic epistemological distinctions. Set during the irreverent days of the Roman carnival, Brambilla delights in a disorienting chaos of masks, costumes, dream images and hallucinations as Hoffmann pulls all the stops in a fantastical narrative of extraordinary complexity. The text unfolds a carnivalesque universe that – in the spirit of Early German Romantic irony – plays with the inescapable mediatory “distortions” brought about by the structures of human consciousness itself. Just as the carnival is a ritual of life-affirming …

“Don’T Trust Anybody, Not Even Us”: Kafka’S Realism As Anarchist Modernism, Jesse Cohn
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Franz Kafka’s personal interest in and contact with the anarchist movement have been fairly well documented, and many have pointed to affinities between his work and anarchist ideas. At the same time, a growing body of scholarship has documented the influence of anarchist politics on modernist aesthetics per se, primarily in terms of a shared resistance to representation—a project that Kafka appears not to share, or at least one he pursues in a very different way. This essay redescribes the strategies of representation found at work in novels such as The Trial and stories such as “The Refusal” in relation …

The availability of so-called cloud-computing services in the translation tools space has changed the way CAT is being taught at the Monterey Institute since this technology was first used in the classroom in 2008: Not only does this new tools paradigm eliminate many major cost factors (e.g. computer lab, licensing fees, local servers), cloud-based translation memories also enable new forms of online collaboration among students and, in fact, the wider translation community.

Theological Conviviality In “The Religious Banquet”: The Case For Reconciliation Between Erasmus And Luther, Kathleen Borchers
Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
The relationship between the two well-known theologians, Erasmus of Rotterdam and Martin Luther, has been thoroughly discussed over the centuries, especially concerning their debate over free will. Although this debate would eventually lead to a parting of the ways, there was a time during the Reformation when Erasmus and Luther worked to bring about reconciliation between the Roman Catholic Church and the Evangelical Protestants. As a humanist, Erasmus communicated his religious ideas and opinions through a variety of texts and discourses. His dialogue, "The Religious Banquet," is an unexpectedly useful prism through which to view Erasmus' commentaries on the Church. …

This presentation examines some of the drawbacks of using free machine translation services, focusing on users’ complete lack of control over the translation output, often caused by the generic or unhelpful data used to train public systems; and offer solutions for driving higher quality in machine translation, including using rule-based systems, and ensuring that engines are only fed domain-accurate data.

Zu Nietzsches Statuen: Skulptur Und Das Erhabene, Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Adorno On Science And Nihilism, Animals, And Jews, Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections
No less than Heidegger or Nietzsche, Adorno had his own critical notions of truth/untruth. But Adorno’s readers are unsettled by the barest hint of anything that might be taken to be anti-science. Thus it is argued that Adorno opposes not science but scientism. But, and here not unlike Arendt, Adorno argued that so-called “scientistic” tendencies are the very conditions of society and of scientific thought.” I ask how we are to read Adorno by exploring his thought on animals and nihilism.

Adolf Hitler has been called many things since his rise to power in 1933 – cruel, maniacal, crazy, evil, just to name a few. Today’s youth, however, know him as “funny.” They associate him not with the Holocaust or World War II, but rather, with the Der Untergang YouTube parody videos in which he stars. It is these videos, along with a handful of other humorous Hitler facsimiles that represent contemporary society’s shift in their stance on the dictator. Though these videos were created to incite laughter, they have provided a glimpse into the way that many people deal with …

Intrinsically dialectical in nature, sudden messianic change and the resolute character of the law are so closely connected with one another that both concepts should be among the key factors shaping a broad understanding of global cultures today. Whether we await the coming of the messiah as the Jewish religion teaches or commemorate his having come and died as most Christian teachings hold, it appears that Walter Benjamin’s “now of a particular recognizability” (The Arcades Project 493) remains elusive, especially with respect to the correlation between the past and the future. In the spirit of temporal vectors that converge, Benjamin’s …
