Cloud-Based Translation Memory Tools Are Changing The Way Translators Work And Train, Uwe Muegge
Uwe Muegge
Cloud-based translation memory systems have been available for more than a decade. Based on recent translation tools surveys and anecdotal evidence, the vast majority of translators continues to use desktop translation software. Despite the fact that cloud-based translation systems offer many advantages over traditional desktop products, including support for multiple linguists working on the same document at the same time and, due to the subscription business model, the need for a dramatically lower initial investment.

Abstract
Blood, organs and other tissues for sale: Diamela Eltit's Impuesto a la carne and the afterwards of the neoliberal development in Latin America.
As Marx elaborated in Capital: Volume I at the moment human labour is sold, the subject participates in an ominous plot where she/he becomes a commodity. In a capitalist mode of production, the subject’s alienation from his/her humanity occurs because the individuals can only express labor through a privately-owned system of production in which he/she is an instrument, an object. This dehumanization process submits the subject under the exchange transactions of the market, where labor value …

Die Deutsche Frau: An Anthology Of German Women's Writing, Alec Down
Resources
With a pressing need for an anthology of women writers in the field of German literature, where women authors have been consistently excluded from the canon (Blackwell 1990), I have selected fifteen texts, which are grammatically and linguistically appropriate for third-year level German classes. I have assessed the selected texts based on their literary quality, the views and ideals depicted and the educational and cultural value that text may have for the student. I have selected a wide range of texts, including short story prose, poetry, dialogued plays, letters and essays, thus providing the reader with an assortment of different …

On Nietzsche’S Judgment Of Style And Hume’S Quixotic Taste: On The Science Of Aesthetics And ‘Playing’ The Satyr, Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections
This essay reviews Nietzsche’s discussion of scholarly judgments of style beginning with his own inaugural lecture at Basel together with David Hume’s stylistic reflections in Hume's “On the Standard of Taste.” This casts light both on the context and the substance of Nietzsche’s own scholarly concern with the question of style and taste in terms of what Nietzsche called the “science of aesthetics” and consequently of scholarly judgment in both classics (or classical philology, here including archaeology and historiography) and philosophy. I also include a brief discussion of Nietzsche’s phenomenological performance practice of dance or playing the “satyr.”

The Need For Speed: How To Ensure The Completion Of Your Most Urgent Translation Projects Within Three Days, Uwe Muegge

Today, almost all product-related translation projects are time sensitive. In the case of life science companies, some documents absolutely must get translated in the shortest amount of time and at the highest possible level of quality to prevent patients coming to harm. In this case study, attendees will learn how CSOFT worked with a medical device manufacturer to develop an integrated workflow that, among other things, eliminated in-country translation review, and resulted in turn-around times of three days or less.

Faster Translation, Anyone? Strategies For Reducing Translation Turnaround Time, Uwe Muegge
Uwe Muegge
Anyone who has worked long enough on the service provider side of the translation business knows that translation buyers typically only have two types of translation projects: the ones that are urgent and the ones that were due yesterday. As most commercial translation projects are closely linked to the effort of selling a product or service in international markets, the time required for translation can mean lost revenue due to the inability to generate sales in a given market. While many in our industry consider lengthy turnaround times for high-quality human translation a given, there are, in fact, many steps …

It is probably safe to say that many, if not most, commercial translation and localization projects today are carried out without a comprehensive, project-specific, up-to-date glossary in place. I suspect that one of the primary reasons for this inefficient state of affairs is the fact that many participants involved in these projects are not familiar with the tools and processes that enable linguists to create monolingual and multilingual glossaries quickly and efficiently. Below are ten valuable insights for linguist who wish to give automatic terminology extraction a(nother) try.

Vers Une Ecocritique Postcoloniale Africaine: L’Environnement Dans Les Litteratures Africaines De Langue Française, Marie Chantale Mofin Noussi
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This work was motivated by two major facts: the African environment is at the heart of the continents relationships with colonialism, neocolonialism and globalization; but there is not enough literary emphasis on this environmental centrality. This work contributes in bridging the gap between African Francophone Literatures and the environmental discourses. This dissertation is the literary analysis of the representation, the transformation, and the exploitation of the African environment in the operating policies of colonial, neocolonial and global power structures. These environmental policies in the colonial and current global world tend to mold the African environment in a way that the …

Romanian nationalism, developed during the first phase of modernization, was significantly influenced by Enlightenment philosophy and by its corollary, Enlightened Despotism. Ernest Gellner and Benedict Anderson's theories of nationalism's origins are pertinent explaining Romanian nationalism, but are too narrow to consider Romania's unique geographical and cultural conditions. Romania's uniqueness facilitated the creation of "Romanianness,"or ethic consciousness, in eighteenth-century, preindustrial Transylvania without a well-established elite, and it continued to evolve without state-sponsored educational policies. Ethnic consciousness eventually transformed into the racism and genocidal nationalism of World War Two, thus straying from typologies expounded by Gellner and Anderson.

Vertrag Und Frust Statt Peitsche Und Lust? - Der Masochistische Sklavenvertrag Als Parodie Und Theater In Leopold Von Sacher-Masochs Venus Im Pelz, Anna Walburga Nisch
Masters Theses
This thesis addresses the masochist slave contract in Leopold von Sacher-Masochs Venus im Pelz and reads the slave contract between Severin and Wanda as a parody of the 19th century marriage contract. This interpretation points to the need to understand masochism less as a sexual perversion and more as a reaction to specific political and historical conditions. By becoming a cruel woman, the dominatrix symbolizes female emancipation from the dominant role of men. Especially in the marriage contract, the woman is suppressed by male power and has only limited rights. The masochist uses acontract to legitimate the woman´s liberation and …
