The writer and activist Mongo Beti upon his return in 1991 to his homeland in Cameroon, worked with the farmers, crushed by the political system. As he recalls in his novel Ville cruelle, colonial prerogatives have impacted urban planning and the environment. In regards to the numerous ecological disasters, the philosopher Fabien Eboussi Boulaga recalls the communities’ ancient approaches. Currently are such concerns being further tackled in Cameroon ? The suffering of the black body has reclaimed center-stage in the media galaxy thanks to the Black Lives Matter phenomenon, a movement that lives on social media. In this contribution, I argue that despite its ephemeral nature, Black Lives Matter proceeds from a long tradition of black activism. Locating the current reincarnation of the long struggle for black human rights leads us to the trope of metaphors of slavery that captures the materiality of the black suffering body. Although the importance of history in Mongo Beti’s work is well established, research is less prolific on the vision that this Cameroonian writer had of the future of the African people. Yet his work, inspired by everyday life and anchored in the immediate history of the African continent, is strewn with precise reflections on the future of the Black world. The present article explores in Beti’s critical and literary production the foundations of an “omniprésent présent” (François Hartog, Régimes d’historicité, 2003) which highlights another obsession, that of a dream of self-determination and prosperity for the African peoples. New Orleans in 1878 was the most exotic and cosmopolitan city in North America. An international port, with more than 200,000 inhabitants, it was open to French, Spanish, Mexican, South American, and West Indian cultural influences, and home to a thriving population descended from free African Americans. Decoloniality is a concept coined by Walter Mignolo to fight against the invasion of the euro-American imaginary in the rest of the world that Anibal Quijano calls coloniality. Thus designed by the Modernity/Coloniality/Decoloniality research group to answer the vast question raised by globalization to the universal consciousness ; questioning centered on the conditions for re-socialization and a new humanization, the theory of decoloniality is determined as a philosophy of liberation based on epistemic disobedience. In 2012, the documentary film La Réunion : terre d’asile ou terre hostile was first screened at the Comorian International Film Festival (CIFF). The film, directed by Comorian filmmaker Saïd-Ali Said Mohamed, explores the experiences of Comorians on the island of Réunion, a Department of France in the Indian Ocean. It not only discusses the complex, interwoven histories and identities of the Comoros and Réunion, but the film itself is part of a broader movement to reclaim the representation of Comorians. This project, a French to English subtitling of the film and an accompanying analysis, seeks to fully appreciate the …

Resisting The Image: Heidi, Sheep And Swiss Trash, Jonathan Gosnell

The novel Swiss Trash, written by Dunia Miralles in 2000, interrogates stereotypes around immigration and nationhood in contemporary francophone Switzerland, with the intention of turning some notions on their head and letting others fester, uncomfortably. The French-language text underscores the divisions, the startling differences present within a seemingly perfect “Heidiland.” Its English title hints at complex and often equivocal cultural denotations extant within the Helvetic Confederation. A simultaneous reading of Swiss Trash and Heidi, of familiar Swiss citizens and intrusive immigrants, offers, this article contends, revealing visions of a dismal present/future and an idealized past.
