War On Humor: Killing Laughter In Times Of Strife, Maria Christina Kardash

This project explores the use of humor as a coping mechanism throughout the first World War. It focuses on three main aspects: (1) the evolution of humor prior to, contemporary to, and after WWI; (2) the contrast between Germany's strict oppression of humor and France's more free approach; (3) and the distinction between civilian and soldier humor.

My approach to the early modern French witch figure, as defined by their materiality, considers the representation of things, objects, and substances in texts. It was inspired by the surge in material culture studies, whose genesis in the 1980s and 1990s spurred theoretical approaches to (re)considering human interactions with objects, the way in which materials can be manipulated to serve various ends, and which objects were deemed culturally significant. This dissertation identifies the significant presence of political economics in Lettres d’une Péruvienne by Françoise de Graffigny, née Françoise d'Issembourg du Buisson d'Happencourt (1695 –1758), to affirm its author as a pioneer in the field. It explores Graffigny’s use of the sentimental novel as a vehicle to carry those ideas to the reading community. It reviews Graffigny’s preparation to propose novel ideas in the area of political economics and to fully participate in the then-emergent discourse with her male contemporaries. This article focuses on corporality as a focus of meaning in Guelwaar of Ousmane Sembène and, above all, on its multiple relationships with its different ecologies: textual, social, etc. We study, successively, the metamorphosis that is taking place in African societies through the naked body, emaciated or used in a subversive form and the caricature of the political power that we can see in the representation of elongate body, voluminous or profane.

Taking Ousmane Sembène’s internship with the Soviet filmmaker Mark Donskoy as its point of departure, this article traces the entanglement of Sembène’s early films with Soviet cinema. To this end, I will be focusing on the general context of montage and cinema of the Thaw, while giving special consideration to a short Soviet documentary film celebrating Senegalese independence. In particular, paradigms of Thaw cinema can be discerned in Sembène’s Borom Sarret, where they are coupled with the claim to cinematic dialectic, resulting in an active translation into African contexts. This article analyzes Le dernier de l’Empire (1981) by Ousmane Sembène with the main objectives of examining how the postcolonial societies in Africa are touched by many kind of problems addressed by this author in literature. In fact, the book chosen for this study covers the question of the political aspects of the societies, the dictatorship under the name of democracy, corruption as a norm, and many other points. This study examines Sembène’s novel from the point of view of his interpretation of social and political realities. It depicts the post-independence disillusionment of Senegal.

The role of sound is analyzed in five films by Ousmane Sembène, including his first films Borom Sarret (1963), Niaye (1964) and La Noire de... [Black Girl] (1966). The sounds weave an ensemble or “braid” themselves into the fabric of the film in accordance with a concept theorized by critic Trish FitzSimons. This specific nature of braided sounds reveals narrative elements by way of Sembène’s sound technologies and choices and thus invites spectators to enter into a dialogic community, or even a discursive community, with the filmmaker, his films, and other spectators world-wide.

: The fairy of Charlotte-Rose de Caumont La Force’s fairy tale Persinette (Rapunzel) is a complex and ambiguous figure that does not fit into a simple binary of victims and aggressors. I argue that La Force’s adaptation of the fairy tale of the girl in the tower gives the fairy prominent status as one of the main characters instead of being relegated to the usual secondary role. Of the different versions of this fairy tale, La Force’s is the only one with a powerful multidimensional female figure in the fairy role where she is in fact the most dynamic and …

[Introduction] Auteur de plusieurs disques et de nombreux ateliers d'écriture internationaux, d'un livre pour enfants et d'une d'exposition sur des escclaves fugitifs au Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec¹, le rappeur <> Webster (de son vrai nom Aly Ndiaye) est connu pour la profondeur de ses chansons, nourries d'Histoire (fidèle à sa formation d'historien), mais surtout d'un humanisme qui fait face non seulement aux attitudes racistes qu'il a dû affronter pendant sa jeunesse, et aussi à l'isolement créé par des barrières artificielles imposées par la société québecoise dont il fait partie.

This resource is a proficiency-framed, communicative, and task-based e-textbook for Intermediate French II.

Because learners at this level primarily communicate in sentence-level responses about routine, everyday situations, the four units of this e-textbook focus on strengthening skills across the three modes of communication—interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational—while deepening intercultural competencies. Unit themes include:

• presenting oneself and exploring bilingual, intersectional identity;
• engaging in written, oral, and mediated exchanges on topics of personal interest
• examining perspectives, products, and practices of francophone cultures and comparing them with one’s own; and
• mapping linguistic and cultural competencies onto students’ future personal and professional goals.

This research aims to examine MNSU French students’ perspectives on classroom testing, feedback practices and their impact on learning. Using an online questionnaire, data were collected from 18 students enrolled in French 102, French 202, French 404 and French 452. The results indicated that the students in the French program at MNSU positively perceived the classroom testing and feedback practices. They understood the purposes and benefits of classroom testing and feedback provision as these encouraged them to study in order to retain the content, tracked and checked their learning progress in relation to their learning objectives, and provided them with …

This thesis explores the theme of amorous waiting in the literature of Gustave Flaubert and Henry James. Roland Barthes' definition of waiting, as articulated in A Lover's Discourse, is used as a tool to examine the waiting conditions of characters in Madame Bovary, The Beast in the Jungle, and The Ambassadors. By using the Barthesian framework, this thesis identifies and analyzes different forms of gender-based waiting and their distinctive consequences. However, it also notes that the primary texts further complicate the relationship between romantic waiting, gender, and autonomy. This paper examines numerous pre-texts in Anglo-American feminist theology and critical theory seminal to the establishment of feminist philosophy of religion as a distinct academic discipline. Specifically, I trace early reception of philosopher Luce Irigaray’s writing on becoming divine women in Anglo-American feminist circles, arguing that critical attention to the “horizons of expectations” around Irigaray’s person is a necessary step to the myriad readings of her work.
