Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article examines the polysemy of the word harem in several of Fatima Mernissi’s texts. Moreover, it considers the role of orality in the form of “oral archives” that were nurtured, maintained and passed on from mother to daughter. The related issue of Mernissi’s feminist activism is also analyzed. Women in Mernissi’s harem constructed complex narratives and “stories” that incorporated many fragments of “professional” or “national” histories, including the “official” history of Morocco’s attainment of independence in 1956. This dissertation focuses on a corpus of autobiographies and novels produced since 2002 by children, mainly daughters, of harkis: Algerian civilians who fought on the French side during the war of independence of Algeria between 1954 and 1962), including Dalila Kerchouche, Fatima Besnaci-Lancou and Zahia Rahmani. In this study, I have argued that this emerging literature differs from other "minor literatures," as defined by theorists Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, by the fact that these young authors withold the traditional discourse of victimization to emphasize dialogue and reconciliation. The structure of this thesis relies on the physical locations of Mme. de Pompadour. Although the chapters are roughly chronological, beginning with her arrival at Versailles in 1745 and ending with her death in 1764, this work makes no attempt to comprehensively chronicle the entirety of her involvement in the decorative arts. Rather, it focuses on several specific aspects of her patronage, with the goal of illuminating her social position and public image, and how she worked to control the two. This thesis examines the adaptation of fairy tales in ten recent French and German films. It looks specifically at narrative structures, representations of magic, portrayals of childhood, and manifestations of good and evil. This thesis asks how and why contemporary French and German filmmakers choose, consciously or not, to update some of the central motifs of fairy tales for a modern audience and what attitudes toward the reconciliation of tradition and modernity those choices express.

Although Surrealist writing has literary merit, Surrealist texts were written as revolutionary tracts meant to undermine the social order. Yet the politically radical aspects of the movement are no longer taken very seriously. At least one contributing factor to the current impotence of Surrealism is the approach taken in the translation of Surrealist texts. Many translators have presented Surrealist texts as they would traditionally present any literary document. However, Walter Benjamin’s writings on translation, in particular his essay “The Task of the Translator,” provide a novel conception of translation, one which can produce linguistically radical texts. After a crushing defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, the first durable manifestation of the principles of the 1789 French Revolution arose from the ashes of the defeated authoritarian Second Empire. The Third Republic is still today the longest-lasting regime in France after the fall of the Ancien Régime. However, the Third Republic is infamous for its inability to adjust to the devastating effects of World War One, the economic crisis during the Great Depression and the ideological polarization between Fascism and Communism. This thesis analyzes the sociolinguistic situations in postcolonial Latin America and francophone North Africa (the Maghreb) through a comparative lens. Specifically, it examines the ways in which Spain and France’s differing colonial agendas and language ideologies affected the relationships between colonizer and colonized, and, by extension, the role that Spanish and French play(ed) in these regions after decolonization. Finally, it explores how Spain and France’s contemporary discourses frame colonial participation in the two languages’ development, and the psychological effects these ideologies have had on the formerly colonized.

Cet article récupère le concept d’écriture en tant que pratique signifi ante (Kristeva) en parlant de deux romans migrants québécois, L’Ingratitude de Ying Chen et Le Bonheur a la queue glissante d’Abla Farhoud, afi n de montrer comment les indices d’hétérolinguisme dans ces deux textes, en conjonction avec une poétique du fragment, créent une esthétique propre à l’expression de l’identité migrante, ou ce que nous appelons une signifi ance migrante.
