World Languages and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

'Les Intouchables' by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache was an extremely popular 2011 French film. Based on a true story, it relates the unexpected friendship of two 'untouchable' members of society: one minority criminal from the housing projects and one handicapped aristocrat. Touting such values as tolerance, respect and determination, the film melted the hearts of millions both in France and overseas to become the second most viewed French film of all time.

It has long been asserted that language is an integral and inseparable part of culture, and therefore identity. As such, language plays a powerful role in the political, educational, business, and leisure affairs of a nation. Language can aid in unification and it can also cause fragmentation. An example of a nation that faces the challenges that stem from a diverse linguistic background is the West African country of Senegal. In March 1871, in response to the brutal Prussian siege of the city, a humiliating peace treaty with the Germans, and an attempt by the national government to deprive Paris of her cannons, the Central Committee of the National Guard declared Paris independent of the national government and installed itself in the Hôtel de Ville. The Commune de Paris was born. For seventy-two days the Commune held sway over Paris, occupying important public buildings. In 1971, Nicolae Ceausescu, Romania’s secretary-general of the Communist party, ended almost a decade of relative freedom of expression by issuing the July Theses. Similar to the cultural revolutions initiated in China and North Korea, the July Theses changed the landscape of the literary world for nearly 20 years. Books were removed from libraries and stores, young writers were only allowed to publish in anthologies compiled from the winners of governmentadministered “contests,” organizations such as the Writers’ Union and other literary circles were threatened or dismantled, Romanian intellectuals were isolated from the rest of academic Europe, and propagandistic literature filled …

The main theme and plot in Cavalleria Rusticana, Jeli, La Lupa, and Rosso Malpelo can both be identified in the English translations that were analyzed; however, the cultural and religious aspects, together with the nuances in meaning seem to have all been affected in at least some way depending on the accuracy of the translation. THIS YEAR marks the centenary of the birth of one of the world's finest writers, the French-Algerian Albert Camus (1913-1960). When his father, a pied-noir farm labourer died fighting in the French army during the First World War, Camus' mother, Catherine, was forced to work as a cleaner to provide for her two sons. The younger one, Albert, demonstrated academic talent from an early age and managed to continue in education due to the interest taken in him by two inspirational teachers, Louis Germain and the well-known philosopher, Jean Grenier. Using Second Language Learning To Improve Self-Esteem Among K-12 Homeless School Children Of Dallas, Texas, William Miller Walker

This dissertation will explain the process and steps taken to prove the statement that using second language learning can improve self-esteem among K-12 homeless school children of Dallas, Texas. I began by researching the hardships that homeless students experience and then used that information to formulate a program in which I would teach basic French language and culture to a group of K-12 homeless students. Through the use of a valid and reliable self-esteem measurement survey, I was able to track changes in participant’s self-esteem to validate my hypothesis.
